Interview with COMODO Interior & Furniture Design

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I was a graphic designer before studying the Art of Architecture in the US. I always love drawing different graphics and always enjoy the process of creating and understanding a design where I can convey my inner imaginations and inspirations through a visual medium and help the viewer to engage with the story. I worked for a furniture design company back to my twenties, and started my interest in architect and interior design. The very first project of my work was a residential remodeling for my classmate in school, and it was courageous yet encouraging because he trusts and believed in my design philosophy.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
COMODO was founded in 2009. We work in the fields of residential design, commercial interiors, and furniture design with a team of passionate, creative interior designers. The essence of COMODO’ work is found in the creation of a design concept development, balance—between minimalism and functional, between richness and details. Our projects not only to fulfill the client's needs and habits, as well as explore ideas to create refinement with simplicity and high-quality that carries bigger thoughts.
What is "design" for you?
I believe design is part of our daily lives, engage in observation and interact with the design detail is very important. You will always find your inspiration from the appreciation in details because they connect and inspire with each other.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
This project - Poggibonsi is one of my favorite design as the apartment contained a rich materials and sophisticated details inspired by the surroundings. The essence of “five elements” inside the apartment is subtly expressed in the lively palette and expertly curated by combinations of materials and furniture for diverse textures and tactile sensations.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
Concept development, to create a design that can touch people’s hearts. This process is always inspiring during designing as we listen to our client’s stories, get inspired by the conversation in order to create something personal, and work perfectly for them.
What makes a design successful?
Concept development, to create a design that can touch people’s hearts. This process is always inspiring during designing as we listen to our client’s stories, get inspired by the conversation in order to create something personal, and work perfectly for them.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
As a designer, we believe design is part of our daily lives. What we use, what we see, and what we heard are different inspirations to our personal design aesthetic. And when we working on a project our client’s story is the most inspirational, we get to know about their personality, habits, and hobbies then convey them into a design element.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
Our work is minimal and contemporary that focus on the balance between minimalism and functional, richness, and details. There’s always a journey for exploration behind every design. Our design methodology is keen on knowing more about our client’s personality, needs, and then develop them into the design foundation. Our projects not only to fulfill the client's needs and habits, as well as explore ideas to create refinement with simplicity and high-quality that carries bigger thoughts.
What is your "golden rule" in design?
“Design must be functional as well as aesthetically pleasing with small details.”
Who are some of your clients?
Our client not only for the end customers but also for reputable developers in Hong Kong Macau and China such as New World Development, HKR International Limited, ITC Properties Group Limited, and Mizuri Ltd...etc
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
Both residential and commercial project is interesting to work on. Private residential is more personal and focused on functionality and creating a personality. As a residence that they probably will live for over five or ten years, the design itself must be subtle and long-lasting that you won't feel bored but comfortable even after years pass by. For commercial projects like a showroom design, we need to put the brand character into the design, giving the customer an instant and strong impression on the brand. Also, to work with the products or service itself in order to create a welcoming and functional shopping environment for the brand.
