Interview with VOATT Design Studio

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
Yes, I like art creation since I was a child. Besides art, I also like reading, music and movies. Because I like architecture and interior design, I also want to be a good designer and make the urban landscape and people's lives better.
What is "design" for you?
I think "design" is to make the future a better place. Good design can change the landscape of the city, change the living space of human beings and the way of life.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
I really like the design of commercial space, because it can highlight the core value and brand spirit of a company. The most important thing is to let the designer play unlimited creativity and imagination.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
"HAPPY HOUR" is one of our favorite designs. He is a flywheel classroom. We use neon lighting combined with geometric aesthetics to create a psychedelic atmosphere, so that sports can be a very enjoyable thing.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
Our office is our first design work. We use a lot of metal combined with glass to allow sunlight and air to flow through the space, and we plant a lot of green plants, so that we can be close to nature when we are at work.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
My favorite material is paint, because infinite colors can create different spatial atmospheres. And my favorite technique is the deformation technique of metal. The curve curved by metal always looks so elegant and perfect.
When do you feel the most creative?
To be honest, I am always the most creative at 11 o'clock every night, perhaps because I am alone and quiet.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
My most important aspect is the creation of concepts, trying to find the best design for the habits and preferences of the client.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
I am always confused during the design process. What is the best creation and choice?
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
I feel moved after the creation, especially seeing the smile on the client's face.
What makes a design successful?
I think successful design requires good customers, talented designers and excellent construction teams.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
I will judge whether it is a good design from the perspective of practicality and aesthetics.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
The designer's responsibility is to understand the social structure and culture, and the materials used must be environmentally friendly.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
I believe that science and technology are constantly improving. The future design trend will be the combination of artificial intelligence and technology.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
My first exhibition was at the age of 26, and the exhibition was held in Changhua, Taiwan. The theme was "Daily Life." I hope to have an exhibition of works related to architecture and interior in the near future.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
Our creative inspiration comes from movies. The visual combination of music in the film is always so attractive, and I hope that my work is full of aesthetics and charming atmosphere.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
I rarely define my style of creation because I think that the design that every guest needs cannot be the same. If you want to get the same characteristics from each other, I think it is the combination of the human senses and interior design.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I am from Taiwan. There is no world heritage in our country. There is only a hundred years of urban planning and architectural appearance. I think the cons for our professional field is that the culture of Taiwanese people in recent years has always pursued rapid and convenient, and gradually lacked the romance and beauty in life. The advantage is that the designers in Taiwan are actually full of creativity and willing to try different structures and materials.
How do you work with companies?
I was the founder of VOATT DESIGN STUDIO and founded the company with my partner a few years ago. Today, our team members have five people, each with different backgrounds and majors.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
I think it is not easy for a company to find a good designer. It is better to find a suitable designer than to find a good designer.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
The first step in my design process is to communicate with the clients and understand his habits and needs, then propose and use 2D+3D images and modeling to discuss the design with the clients.
Can you describe a day in your life?
Work, work, work, and sleep time, if I have time, I will go to the gym.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
I think that when the designer's advantage is to create his favorite design, the disadvantage is that there will always be a better solution from the mind.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
Until now, I still think that time is never enough. I spend more than 12 hours a day thinking about how design can get better.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
It depends on the size of the case and is simple or complicated. But usually interior design is shorter than the time of architectural design, maybe an interior design can be completed in two to three months, but the architectural design takes three years.
What was your most important job experience?
I graduated from the Department of Architecture and worked in an architectural firm. After graduating from the Product Design Institute, I decided to run a design company that focused on the design of architecture, interiors and products. For me, the work of the architectural design company has given me a great interest in design.
Who are some of your clients?
Friends from different professional fields, including teachers, bankers, company leaders and accountants.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
Any type of design is the concept I want to try. I think everyone has their own type, so there is no single type design as the concept of each case.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
I will continue to design and bring good concepts to the clients to create a better life.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
Yes, I am the leader of the team, and I continue to improve my design skills. I believe that only continuous reading and learning can bring better design and more contributions to society.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
I am working on a new VOATT DESIGN STUDIO office design, and in the new office design, we are about to try more combinations of materials and colors.

Designer of the Day Interview with VOATT Design Studio

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
We are a new design team and have been in business for about 4 years. Our clients respect our profession and each case has a wonderful experience.
How did you become a designer?
I think urban planning, architectural design, and space design are all fascinating subjects. Extremely challenging but also full of sensibility and art, it will be implemented in every case. I have absolute self-confidence in color and space. Usually, my creative inspiration is from the movie scene. For me, the most influential designer is Kelly Hoppen.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
I think the first step in designing is to understand the client's needs, including the their ergonomics, habits, beliefs. Simulate the authenticity by planning and scenes of the plan with the aid of digital technology. Finally, make a lot of physical model to feel the real space composition and construction details. For a new project plan, I will first provide the creation of the overall space, and then do research and analysis.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
When I start creating a new project, I always feel excited and expecting. In the process, I often feel the difficulties of frustration and how to choose a better construction method. But at the moment of completion, from the moment I see the happy appearance of the client, my heart will only full of emotion.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
When I was a child, I liked reading, listening to music, painting and model making, and film producing. I believe that these interests are the main factors that make me a designer. I have developed the ability to observe and think, and the sensitivity to materials from these interests. And I believe that with a keen observation ability, it can bring better space for users.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
Whenever I finish a case, I always feel that I have learned a lot of new things, which makes me grow stronger and become a better designer. I hope I can break the limitation and provide clients with the best materials and quality space in every design. And my dream design case is the home of the astronauts.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
Cultivate the ability to observe things and continue to learn new knowledge and technology. My first design teacher once told me that "There is no answer to the design, but you can find the most appropriate answer in the constant experiment.". My own growth experience is through a lot of reading and taking photos and editing movies and finding out the relevance and possibilities.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
Constantly learn about unknown things and maintain a keen observation of the environment. Don't stop designing because of failure or frustration. Try to find the most suitable material and construction method and present an aesthetic space structure. There is no absolute answer to the design, but there is a best way to do the design.
What is your day to day look like?
In fact, I only sleep for five hours a day, the rest of the time I'm always designing. But I always arrange travel during the holidays, because I can always learn more new things and experiences during the trip.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
Our company name is "VOATT DESIGN", which means Visual, Olfactory, Auditory, Taste and Touch. We believe that good design is associated with our senses. We hope to create a space that combines senses by the composition of different materials and the combination of natural elements. "Let design become a part of life" is our core concept.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
Good design is based on the cooperation and trust between the designer and the client and the construction team. Every moment requires the professional ability and dedication of everyone, so when the teamwork is in good cooperation, good design will be presented.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
There is no absolutely complete design for me. In other words, every design seems to be more perfect after being used, but this is also the most fascinating part of the creative process, isn't it?
What is your biggest design work?
We are most proud of using modelling to study the possibilities of space. Some people think that we have spent too much time making models, but I think this is the best way to find a good design. We are designing a new office recently, it is a small building, old but charming. We continue to make models only for the division of the structure and visual proportion of the facade. We actually enjoy the process of finding answers in the creation.
Who is your favourite designer?
I really like Kelly Hoppen, his control of space proportion and material is very fascinating and confident. If I had the chance, I would like to meet the architect Peter Zumthor, who always combines architecture with the most natural materials and creates simple and meaningful spaces.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
We are young designers from Taiwan. The culture of Taiwan is open and diverse. We are happy to learn new knowledge and materials from all over the world. Therefore, we also actively participate in important competitions and events in various countries and learn about outstanding designers and works from all over the world.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
We are a team of designers. Although my partner and I always have our ideas and viewpoint in the process of creation, but we will always find the favorite design as the work. We believe that the advantage of having a partner is that you can observe more subtle things and combine different suggestions to present a more perfect design.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
We provide the best advice for people who need our profession, and we hope to bring people a better life through our designs. We expect to present our designs in every corner of the city in the future.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
When we participated in A' Design Award, we met designers from all over the world and saw every outstanding design work. This is a very good experience and award, and we hope that we can participate in this competition every year in the future.

I think good design is the most original intuition, not complicated, not deliberate, make the complexity simple.
