Interview with shigui Liu

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
When I was in the second grade of elementary school, I started taking art interest classes, and I dreamed of becoming an artist. Although I had good grades in other subjects at the time, I still chose art. Later, I entered the Art Design School of Shenzhen University to study art design. Because of my personal love of art, whether it is painting or design creation can bring me happiness and strength. Turning interest into a profession, some people say it is an unfortunate thing, but for me it is always a pleasure.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Our studio is on the top of the building. Our studio is not large, only an office, a meeting room and a garden. But the environment of the studio is very free and relaxing. We can walk to the rooftop at any time to breathe the fresh air. Our team has only 5 people, but they have made many high-quality projects, such as "five-star hotels, office buildings, libraries, shopping malls, etc., of course, there are some exquisite small projects. Regardless of the size of the project, we will do our best to The owner provides the optimal solution, and we also hope that each project can be successful in design and business.
What is "design" for you?
"Design" is to make some bad, simple, and boring things in life vivid and interesting through resource integration.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
A challenging public space that allows more people to experience and visit. For example: commercial space, hotel space, entertainment space, etc.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
"Design works" that can resonate with the viewer. These works include master works published through major platforms, as well as some interesting things created by ordinary people.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
That was a "project proposal" made for the client of the first company 15 years ago. I independently completed this "project proposal". In the end, the company successfully obtained the design right for this project.
When do you feel the most creative?
Inspiration does appear at any time, rather than staying in a specific time period. Every time I have a new idea, I will use various methods to quickly record the ideas I have at this moment.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
1.Completeness 2. Life flavor 3. Scene feeling and story 4. Refining
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
An expectation of an unknown. Because before the plan is finalized, I can't determine the final form of the design. Design is also a process of continuous exploration, which I find very interesting.
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
Like other designers, there is a sense of accomplishment and presence. But the difference is that I will pay attention to it for a long time. Understand the customer's inner feelings and social evaluation of the project itself after using it for one month, one year, five years or more.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
Design is a product of human society and has certain social attributes. How to assess the quality of a design work ultimately depends on the user's evaluation of the design work and whether it can arouse people's resonance with the design work. If it can be done, I think it will be a successful work. Bad works often focus only on the surface, too much on the surface form, and lack the original meaning of the design.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
It is everyone's responsibility to maintain the sustainable development of nature, and of course designers are no exception. Society continues to develop in a better direction. As a booster of social development, designers are constantly responsible for creating and optimizing existing things.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
The future world, which is what we call the third industrial revolution. This era is a great era of human-machine coexistence. Whoever can make better use of "human-machine" to make creative designs in the future, then he may lead this new era.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
Our works will be exhibited in China, France, Japan and other places as participants. So far, we have not created an independent solo exhibition. When enough good works have accumulated in the future, we may hold an independent exhibition of the company's works.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
Inspiration comes from life. As long as you pay attention to observing every bit of life, you can definitely find truly valuable ideas. It is also important to read and browse various real-world consultations in large numbers. Only by keeping pace with the times and constantly understanding the world's major situation and development can we continue to be at the forefront of design.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
We cannot be limited to a specific style. We need to create and find the best form suitable for the project itself according to the actual needs of the project. The designer has the creativity of the artist, but the design must have a certain purpose, otherwise the meaning of the design will be lost.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Shenzhen, China. China has an excellent cultural history of more than 5,000 years, many of which are worth learning. The design level of contemporary China and the aesthetic level of the public have improved compared with the past, but it is still not enough. The improvement of the public's aesthetic is very important. The current public's respect and recognition of designers is still not enough.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
Young people need to hone their patience, verify their design ideas through more design practice opportunities, and constantly revise their works. Of course, the spirit of never failing is also what young people must learn and master so that they can continue to advance.
What is your "golden rule" in design?
Three parties: 1. Direction 2. Method 3. Plan Three hearts: 1. Perseverance 2. Carefulness 3. Kindness
What skills are most important for a designer?
1.Super learning ability 2. Super observation and analysis ability 3. Super performance and expression ability
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
No matter how time-consuming the task, the logical relationship of the project design must be clear. A standard must be established on basic principles, and the overall direction of the design must be firmly controlled. If the direction is right, more time can be saved.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
Small projects can sometimes be completed in a few days. Large projects sometimes take 1 year, or even longer to complete.
What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
Why did Party A do such a project? What is the core competitive advantage of this project? What are the direct and indirect reasons why people choose this project?
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
I like the most simple and connotative works. In China we have an old saying that "the really powerful things don't need too much packaging".
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
In the future, I hope our team can receive more interesting projects. Can create more excellent design works.
How can people contact you?

Extended Interview with shigui Liu

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
In 2005 graduated from the "Art and Design College" of Shenzhen University. I have been engaged in design work for 15 years. I am now the creative director of "LSG Design Office".
How did you become a designer?
I have been drawing since childhood. Around the second grade of elementary school, I started studying art. Now I am still engaged in exciting design work. All the work I do now comes from deep love and interest.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
I am a comprehensive designer, and have done design-related work in architecture, landscape planning, interior design, and graphic design. I hope to do more research and discussion on architecture and interior design.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
The most important thing for young people is to use their precious time to try more new things and learn more about them. Eventually you will find out what really touches your heart.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
The biggest difference, I think, is the pursuit of "quality" and "details". Excellent designers are more pursuing perfection, and sometimes even look at their works with a nearly harsh and critical eye.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
Good design must come from life and return to life. If I just design something weird and innovative, just to get the attention of others, then I would not recognize this kind of work. Good design should allow people to experience the "emotion" of the designer in the work, and "emotion" is the cornerstone for the best life for us, and it can also inspire us to rethink and recreate life.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
Good design can enhance people's aesthetics and promote people's desire for beautiful things. Investing in good design is investing in a good future.
What is your day to day look like?
I hope to design for everyone who can understand and appreciate our work.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
I hope to design more commercial space and hotel space. It is best to start with project planning, including integrated design of architecture, interior space, and landscape.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
Design must have planning ability, good design is not only a form, but more important is its internal business logic and long-term planning. Of course, the originality and uniqueness of the work will make people impressed, but the internal business logic will enable it to survive for a long time.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
The designers I admire more are: Tadao Ando, Le Corbusier, Miyazaki, Alva Aalto, Zaha Hadid, etc.
What is your biggest design work?
I prefer designers who have their own unique insights and design language. Because through these different design languages or insights, it can trigger me to rethink things.
Who is your favourite designer?
I have many design works. If I have to choose the best one, I really don't know how to choose. Because I am still young, there are more designs waiting to be created and realized in the future. Relatively speaking, this FIT BAR project, which won the gold award, did indeed take some effort. It has not only achieved great commercial success, but also won many domestic and foreign professional awards in design.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
It is recommended to look with your own eyes, measure with your own steps, touch with your own hands, and finally feel it with your heart. Why the works of the design masters are great and outstanding must be personally experienced and realized, not just reading books or simply listening to others.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
To perceive good works, and then slowly try to transform these excellent works into our own thinking and enhance our own design taste. Slowly, it will be closer to the designer and one step closer.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
In China, we often talk to colleagues about the word design, which can be said separately. It contains two meanings.
