Interview with XAVIER ALEXIS ROSADO

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

After, I saw a teacher sewing for a Jayuya Festival, I decided to participate for the same competition. For my surprise, I won the First Place in the National Indigenous Festival of Jayuya Puerto Rico. During that moment, I decided to be a designer. I believe I do have different abilities and skills to create unique piece of clothes.

What is "design" for you?

Design is a dominion of the art, that you can express an idea for any purpose.

What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

“LA LAMPARA” was a project created for Miss Universe of Puerto Rico. Most I like for this design was the shape and idea.

What was the first thing you designed for a company?

I did my first design to my sister Molly, I called “LLUVIA”. The design was a representation of the raining days in Puerto Rico. The material was nature rope material and quartz cords.

When do you feel the most creative?

I do feel the most creative when I’m spending time with my nephews and nieces.

Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

I do focus more in the materials, body shape and be an exclusive design.

What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

After I completed a design, I do feel satisfied. Another goal is complete.

What makes a design successful?

I believe what makes a design successful is the satisfaction of my customer.

When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

Such as the following aspects: No shape of body, style isn’t appropriate and quality of the textures.

From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

Contribute to new trends of the fashion and create significate changes to the society.

How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

I believe, design field will be able to have more flexible techniques of construction.

When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

My last exhibition was in National Indigenous Festival of Jayuya Puerto Rico. I would like to have my next exhibition in Italy.

How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

I describe my design style as a couture. Some of the main characteristics of my style are the geometric pieces, textural and shape of the design. All my designs are made with raw material.

Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

I live in Jayuya, Puerto Rico. Yes, I feel the cultural heritage of my country affects my design because I feel using raw material.

Can you talk a little about your design process?

My design process is simple, if I had an idea right now, I used a pencil & paper and start organizing my ideas. Then I used Photoshop Illustrator and start build it up the idea.

What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

Camillet Design, all my design for National Indigenous Festival of Jayuya Puerto Rico, Men Collection & Wedding dress.

Can you describe a day in your life?

I usually wake at 6:00 am, go for a morning run with delicious breakfast and my day start. I drive 1hr 30min weekday to Yauco High School to teach my student how amazing is fashion design.

From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?

Negatives is a lot of competition and Positive opportunity express yourself and create a product.

Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

Depends of necessity of my design. Most of the time, I’m doing different design in my house.

How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

All depends of the necessary of the design, usually can take 3 weeks or more.

What was your most important job experience?

My most important job experience was in Mr. Sid because was a different type of clothes that I was working on.

What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?

I’m currently working on a book. I enjoyed because all of this is new for me. I’m learning how to structure and complete a book for kids.

What are your future plans? What is next for you?

I’m going to start my Master Degree and I would like to create my own brand and business.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?

I obtained Associate in Science of Fashion Design Degree in Pontifical Catholic University of PR and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design in AI Miami International University of Art & Design. My design is inspire en my culture and handmade techniques that make the dress unique.

What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?

A good designer is who works hard for a best quality product and great designer is who obtained the fame & legacy.

You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?

Good design is what my customer feels satisfaction and happiness with the product.

How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?

I would like to published a Science Fiction Book & works for a high couture company.

What is your biggest design work?

Cristian Dior designer have the best quality design & construction techniques.

Who is your favourite designer?

Visualization of the capability and connect with the people's beauty.
