my name is fung, graduate as a quantity surveyor, I worked in luxury retail industry as a project manager for more than 10 years. I have the sense of design and started interior design as a freelance meanwhile. with the strong back ground of construction, project management and knowledge of technical, which has made myself become an all round interior designer and can manage the design and build project.

Interview with CHEANG Hoi Fung

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I actually studied building studies and quantity surveying at the City University in Hong Kong. my first summer job worked as a quantity surveying trainee at the construction site at the Peninsula Hotel extension, HK at 1994. I was arranged to coordinate the construction for the top floor restaurant called 'Felix' which is designed Philippe Starck, the world-famous designer. I was so lucky I could work for the world- class design project for my 1st job and my buried interest and potential on design has been triggered via the design drawing and physical built. after my graduated and worked as the quantity surveyor, I studied the part time evening course for interior design. after 3 years worked for the quantity surveying industry, I worked for interior fitout contractor as a project manager and involved many world class design projects (retail boutiques, hospitality, office and residential) . meanwhile, I have gained a lot of visions, experiences, skills of interior design through the job training. i had an opportunity to work as a freelance design and build project for a small retail boutiques for my friends on 2007. i have got a lot of referral for new projects since then. i setup my own design+PM+build firm named WHDL on 2010. as i have the strong technique background and the sense of aesthetic, which can help me to strike the balance between the feasibility and aesthetic. i always got a strong touch when i walked into a interesting designed space. somehow i feel the connection between my soul and the space.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
My company called WHDL合十, established since 2010, our scope is design, design/ PM consultancy and construction. 合十, the Chinese characters means palm togethers. with the spirit of gratitude and blessing, our company is committed to creating comfortable, practical and yet harmonious, elegant and joyful space for our clients through our designs. this is our business philosophy and design concept.
What is "design" for you?
to create something (object, space etc.)to improve human life both physically and mentally
What makes a design successful?
clients feel happy, exciting, touching and feel better improvement when using their new space.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
i respect every design. the design makes client happy is always good design.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
-to design space makes people feel peaceful, harmony and joyful -use material less damage the environment and less energy consumed
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
i did some local TV interview to demo my projects and introduction of advanced material last year. the next one will be next year.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
-zen elements, architectural, travelling, mediation -mediation, projects done by others -mediation, life details
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
-zen, peaceful, harmony, elegant, subtle luxury, timeless, practical, human care -i am a buddhist, i hope my clients always feel peaceful and joyful via living for the spaces i design for them. -form follows function, less is more
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
i live hk. hk used to be the colonial city of UK and is a international metropolitan city. multi cultural in the city makes the design vibes very exciting. (+)multi cultural makes a lot of idea flowing around the city (-)hk is a tiny city where the space design is very limited
How do you work with companies?
i like to work close with the team via respect each other, open discussion, accept new idea, less pressure but serious atomsphere
Can you talk a little about your design process?
client requirement (scope)> mediation> brain storming> design development
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
mini garden, multi function zone (worship, mediation, gym, study and gathering), hidden storage mechanisim, walk-in closet and layout planning
Can you describe a day in your life?
driving, mediation, smoke cigar, make jokes with people, blessing people, working, gym, play with dogs
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
- listen/observe attentively to people; - work with your passion rather than just treat it as a job.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
I will say positive only -creativity; free of thought, exciting, self satisfaction, team work; vivid
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
-via mediation, I can be inspired. I will drop down all the idea floating around. most productive is in the morning
What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
- how is the function requirement for the space used? - how is the timeline and budget?
What was your most important job experience?
-I worked for Duty free stores and worked with international projects and designer in asia pacific area. I gained the international vision which help my design work a lot.
Who are some of your clients?
retail owner; residential end user and millwork supplier from oversea.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
-I want to buy some properties and renovated them in my own style and then resell them or rent them out. as a investiment
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
-I am doing a residential project in hK where my client likes the Japanese style. finally we mutually agreed to do mild Japanese style just with some signature elements to highlights.
Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
as my career path started as a surveyor, and then a builder project manager and then a designer, my company is quiet all rounded to provide prof. service on each scope. besides I work for design work for the local clients, I also as a PM consultant for some luxury brands such as YSL and tumi. meanwhile, for my international network and know how for building, I provide service for installation work for oversea millworker for local installation as well. and I am both the HK and macau permanent residence, I am legally to work at both locations. I have the follow professional qualifications: RICS- Royal institute of chartered surveyors CIOB- chartered Institutes of Builders HKICM- Hong Kong Institute Construction Managers HKIDA- Hong Kong Interior Design Association HKDA- Hong Kong Design Association the above shown myself and my team is capable to do the design, PM and build projects.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I started my career as a quantity surveyor for 3 years and then changed as a project coordinator for fitout projects. I learned interior design via evening study and job training. I did a lot of freelance design works while worked as a project manager and I found my own company WHDL by 2010. our service is design, management and build. I have a diploma of interior design and I am the full member of Hong Kong Interior Designer Association and Hong Kong Design Association
How did you become a designer?
I had my first summer job worked as a surveyor assist at the construction site Peninsula Hotel Extension at 1994. I was so lucky I assisted on building the famed restaurant 'felix' in there, designed by world famous designer Philippe Starck. while I worked in there my potential of design passion triggered and then I made up my mind and studied interior post graduated. after my career 1st 3 years surveying training, I changed my career to project manager for fitout projects. i become more interested on interior design as i involved a lot of great design projects. actually, i started more interested on architectural and my favour architect is Tadao Ando, Foster etc. but it is more easy to start up a design work is interior design in HK.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
my priority of design 1)enduser friendly, 2)form and layout, 3)personalized style of enduser. i can use hand sketch to do design concept, and rely on the auto cad and rendering for the client understanding. as my background is a builder, i can understand the technical and scale of the end product. i seldom rely on mockup except clients wanted.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
i always feel exciting when doing design. the idea suddenly hit my head made me so exciting. i am exciting from the design concept to the end product built. i like most during design is mediation and smoke cigar. i am sensitive on details surround me. i always can create something inspired by surrounding. i feel so happy through this process if the idea transferred to realistic. inner side satisfaction.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
hardworking, passion, respect and love people and creature. caring others. all the above. design is you creating somethings for others to enjoy. that's why you need to respect people and caring others. so that you can do good design.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
my own growth path is via construction training. i hope people remember my well organized on design, progress, and budget control, not just only focus on good design. i want to design more furniture in future.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
work hard, be sensitive, care others, sense of humor patient passion. self thought.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
never bad mouth to the competitor, the resource from the universe is abundant respect every design/ designer allow sometime for oneself alone. mediation is the best way.
What is your day to day look like?
i started mediation and exercise in the morning. enhance both mentally and physically. i something read design news. riding motorcycle and smoke cigar doing joke with people
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
-timless, unique, connected to people, make people feels good and inspiration . -not too rely on the trend
How do you decide if your design is ready?
my design is initial from practical point of view so that it is always feasible. i usually stop further development when it actually feasible, i have to consider the budget and timeline as well. when the client see the draft and feel happy. it is successful then. 100% of my client happy to my design since myself satisfied on it before present to client.
What is your biggest design work?
i designed and named a biscuit store for my wife calls "blesscuit", all baked be blessed and customers be blessed when they eat them. the idea is the biggest, even each store is small. i am originally doing commercial design and build and one of my client encouraged me to do her residential projects. after that, my client so happy and served me with a lot of referral. this is the milestone i started work for residential projects
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
hk yes yes hk interior design good design makes people feel joyful, peaceful, happy, harmony, timeless, less pressure.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
i am easy to work with.i respect people. 50/50 individual and team work i concern the attitude and character of someone, rather than just skill and knows how. creativity and how they treat people and street smart. design with love, gratitude and blessing influence others with some direction with my thought take care all stuff of my company creativity and caring people
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
i yearly donate an amount to the institute i joined (RICS, CIOB etc.0 i yearly donate an amount to the mediation centre and wish more people can benefited with mediation process i yearly donate to Oxfam, orbis, cancer fund, unief, save the children etc.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
participate competition widen ones vision on design aspect, build up network and got update with design trend.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
i graduated in BSC (Hon) quantity surveying and worked as a quantity surveyor for 3 years. i felt so excited when the design drawing turned to actually built. i was touched by every detail. i studied part time evening course of interior design after then and changed my career gradually.
How did you become a designer?
-i am talented on it, and i have passion. -with the strong technical background makes me a lot easier to manage the designer.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
-good designer can do good design -great designer can do timeless and symbolic design.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
-good form and shape -useful -make people/ end users feel exciting, touching and joyful. -VS. cost
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
good design can make people feeling joyful, peaceful, happy, exciting, interesting, inspiration, relaxing. that's why we need invest on design so that people physical and mental health can be improved.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
-touch base client needs from their heart -study the living pattern of the enduser -inspiration via the mediation. -budget and progress control
Who is your favourite designer?
I ever designed and owned biscuit shop named 'Blesscuit'; it means all the cookie and biscuit baked with blessing.

-more care others -enlarge their vision -respect everyone/ everything surrounded
