Interview with Polatai Oleksandr

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I was always connected with art. During my school/first university, I was using reverse side of my copybooks to draw or to "design" different things.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
My design studio is currently just forming, that is why there is nothing to say about it.
What is "design" for you?
Design is esthetic, efficient, effective, visual, psychological and social problem solution.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
Spaceship exterior and interior for company that creates themed parks.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
I prefer to use 3d modeling, because it give a large flexibility in design.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
1)esthetic 2)efficient 3)effective 4)visual 5)psychological 6)social
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
Depends what I design, because I need to implement feelings in design
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
To create esthetic, efficient, effective, visual, psychological and social problem solution.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
Design is not evolving at all. People always vere using "design" in the same way, no matter what field.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
Did not have one but I hope that one day I will be able to hold one.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
My inspiration is competition, I always try to do something better than someone created.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
My style is combination of my weak and strong sides which are limited by my purview.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Ukraine and sadly some parts of "Ukrainian" design can be seen in my design. I would like to live somewhere else, where it is much more beautiful and comfortable, where everyone has more self responsiblity.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
They already know how to select good designer, just one vish: hire sometimes students.

Can you describe a day in your life?
8:00 - start of the day 8:00-19:00 - Studying, designing, working 19:00-21:00 - end of the day (entertaining)
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
Customers always think that they know better than a person that has spent 8 years on design.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
I don't manage it, I work till I tired, mostly I spend whole day and when I starting feeling tired, I go sleep and continue next day.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
Enough. Each design has unique conditions and I don't hesitate to spend as much time as needed, until it has deadline.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
I am going to start studying in Turin (transportation design) on bachelor degree from next studying year (if there will be no problems with quarantine)
