Interview with Binomio Taller

Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Binomio Taller is a dynamic architecture and interior design firm based in Merida, Mexico. Established in 2019, our studio is led by founders Maya Ruz, an accomplished interior designer, and Kelly Rodriguez, a visionary architect. At Binomio Taller, we are dedicated to creating integrated spaces that seamlessly blend architecture, interior design, and furniture design. Our approach emphasizes the uniqueness of each project, ensuring that it fulfills the specific needs and preferences of our clients. We believe in addressing design from both the inside out and the outside in, achieving total integration from conception to the smallest detail. Our philosophy revolves around the intrinsic complexity of simplicity, guiding our pursuit of elegant and purposeful design solutions. Overall, Binomio Taller is more than just a design studio; it's a collaborative hub where creativity, craftsmanship, and client-centricity converge to create spaces that inspire and delight.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
During the design process, our primary focus is on the end user, who will ultimately inhabit the space. Understanding their needs, preferences, and behaviors is paramount to creating a successful design solution. Additionally, we prioritize developing a strong conceptual framework for each project. This concept serves as the guiding force behind all design decisions, ensuring cohesion and harmony throughout the entire process. By centering our attention on the user experience and maintaining a clear conceptual direction, we are able to create meaningful and impactful designs that resonate with our clients and users alike.
What makes a design successful?
Overall, a successful design at Binomio Taller is characterized by its ability to meet the needs of users, embody a clear and compelling concept, innovate and inspire, prioritize sustainability, and foster emotional connections.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
The responsibilities of a designer extend beyond creating visually appealing spaces. It's about making design accessible to everyone, ensuring that it enhances the quality of life for all members of society. Moreover, designers bear the responsibility of considering the long-term impact of their decisions on the environment. We must be mindful of how our choices today can shape the world for future generations, striving to minimize environmental footprint and promote sustainability in all aspects of our work. By prioritizing accessibility, inclusivity, and environmental stewardship, designers can contribute positively to society and leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
Our design inspiration is a culmination of diverse influences drawn from various sources. We find inspiration in the unique context of each project, the vision and aspirations of our clients, and the surrounding environment. Nature, with its inherent beauty and harmony, often serves as a rich source of inspiration, guiding our approach to sustainable and biophilic design. Additionally, art and culture play a significant role, offering a wealth of creative stimuli and historical references to draw upon. Ultimately, our creativity is nourished by the interconnectedness of these influences, allowing us to approach each project with fresh perspectives and innovative ideas.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
We refrain from adhering to specific design styles. Instead, our approach revolves around tailoring each project to its unique context and individual requirements. This philosophy allows us to create bespoke solutions that seamlessly integrate with the project's surroundings and reflect the distinctive vision of our clients. Our design process is characterized by adaptability, innovation, and a commitment to crafting spaces that resonate with authenticity and purpose. By eschewing rigid stylistic conventions, we prioritize the creation of truly personalized and contextually relevant designs that stand the test of time.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
We reside in Mexico, a country renowned for its rich cultural heritage. The cultural tapestry of Mexico serves as a profound source of inspiration for our designs, influencing our conceptual approach and infusing our projects with a sense of cultural authenticity. Drawing from our country's diverse traditions, history, and artistic expressions, we imbue our designs with elements that pay homage to our cultural roots while embracing contemporary sensibilities. While living in Mexico offers invaluable opportunities to tap into this vibrant cultural heritage, it also presents challenges such as navigating bureaucratic processes and addressing infrastructure limitations. Nonetheless, we view these obstacles as opportunities for innovation and creativity, driving us to find inventive solutions that celebrate the essence of our cultural identity while addressing practical considerations.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
Our advice for young designers is to actively seek opportunities to gain real-world experience as early as possible in your career. Internships, apprenticeships, and entry-level positions provide invaluable insights and hands-on learning opportunities that can significantly accelerate your growth and development as a designer. Additionally, staying informed and aware of current trends, innovations, and developments in the field is crucial. Keep abreast of industry news, attend workshops, seminars, and conferences, and engage with fellow designers and professionals to broaden your perspective and stay inspired. By combining practical experience with ongoing learning and a curious, open-minded approach, young designers can position themselves for success and continually evolve in their craft.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
At Binomio, we firmly believe in the power of teamwork and collaborative efforts in our design process.
