Interview with Qixin Wu

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
Sure! My name is Qixin Wu. I was born in China, studied abroad in Philadelphia, worked in Manhattan, and am located in New Jersey right now. I have loved to draw from childhood and never gave up recording my memories and experience with drawing. I gained my textile engineering bachelor's in Shanghai but determined my career in the design field. So I went abroad and started my graduate degree in Philadelphia for deep diving into textile design especially in print/surface. Playing with colors, silhouettes, and different materials is much more fun than I thought before.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
I am working for an apparel company and work as freelance textile designer for home textiles.
What is "design" for you?
The definition of design is expanding right now. For me, design is not only about creating something and putting it into use. It is a lifestyle, an aesthetic of living. It contains curiosity for life, enthusiasm for aesthetics, and respect for nature and humanity.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
A new design collection for the upcoming show. In a small fashion design studio.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
For my hobby, I only use a black uni pen, watercolor-color pencil, and watercolor. For design, Adobe Suite.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
only focus, no emotion at all. If I was stuck, then I would become upset and anxious.
What makes a design successful?
Can be easily differentiated from other competitors, but the difference is not its goal.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
Harmony in aesthetics and if it is easy to understand by the users/customers.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
Designers can lead the trends. So the responsibilities are huge, to be honest. Designers should take ownership of what he/she is doing and simultaneously keep growing.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
Yes, the design field is evolving right now. The future might be more in information design, environmentally friendly design, and spiritual pursuit.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I am living in New Jersey, the USA. Yes, I think the surroundings are crucial to your life and how you live your life decides how you put yourself into designs. For the pros and cons, I would like to say it is very close to New York City which is the largest pool for multi-cultures, which is the best opportunity for designers to explore and digest the latest trends and absorb different air from all over the world. The cons I think because I studied abroad and stayed in the USA after 2012, I am far away from my family and hometown. I do have homesickness sometimes.
How do you work with companies?
I was employed by a licensing corp apparel company for now and doing freelance design work for home textiles.

Extended Interview with Qixin Wu

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
Sure! My name is Qixin Wu. I was born in China and located in New Jersey right now.
How did you become a designer?
I love to observe and record. I felt thrilled when I recorded what I observed very well. So I drew everywhere at any time. My doodle was all over the walls of my home. Thanks to my parents, they didn't punish me for that reason but encouraged me to keep my enthusiasm for drawing and encouraged me to learn how to play the piano. I am so lucky to have learned drawing and instruments and to keep in touch with all the knowledge about aesthetics. All of those drove me to determine my life into a path in design. Which can keep my passion for drawing and expand my curiosity in lots of other fields.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
The patterns for home textiles, the fabrics for home textiles or apparel, and the graphic designs for multiple surfaces in both printed-out and digital.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
I would like to say, first of all, be humble. There are so many talented around the world and once you meet them, there is much more you can learn from the pioneers and peers. And never rely on the so-called inspiration. Do more research, and deep dive into what you gained already. Don't put any preconceptions on your customers (if you worked).
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
For commercials, a great designer can impact your customers, not just align with their opinions. For personal design projects, a great designer can jump out of the box.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
Can be easily differentiated from other competitors, but the difference is not its goal.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
aesthetics and can be used. Because it can bring value to pay back that investment.
What is your day to day look like?
I want to create more material designs. I want to play with different materials to make fabrics and create decorations.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
I want to record the time. I do have some ideas in my mind. Just don't have time to finalize it.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
Never let your inspiration go, but never only reply to your inspiration. Read more, explore more, and be humble to learn.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
I love the aesthetics of Guanzhong Wu. I love the cute ideas of Tanka Tatsuya.
What is your biggest design work?
I don't have any typical favorite designs. I only have favors in aesthetics and type of designs.
Who is your favourite designer?
The Last Blooming. The idea of recording time collapse is starting from here. The whole concept was vivid in every step when I created it. I do like the idea of combining the different fabrics to create a sheer look. And I do like to press the living flower during heat press.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
Read, go out to meet nature and people. Collecting more information and digesting it, not being ruled by it. Surrounding by a good environment, if possible, go to a good college to learn.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
The definition of design is expanding right now. For me, design is not only about creating something and putting it into use. It is a lifestyle, an aesthetic of living. It contains curiosity for life, enthusiasm for aesthetics, and respect for nature and humanity.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
My parents. My boyfriends especially the first and the second one when I was a student. My teachers especially the one when I study textile design.
