YangYang Liao studied industrial design engineering at the School of Design and Art, Beijing University of Technology, with a focus on human-computer interaction design, product design and dynamic visual design. I have extensive experience in practical projects in the areas of mechanical equipment, public transportation, household appliances, personal products and brand image design. I am also actively involved in social practice, working with my supervisors to complete relevant projects, participating in design competitions and various academic forums. Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I am a classmate who graduated from the Industrial Design Department of Beijing Institute of Technology, and now I only work with Xiaomi. The reason why I want to be a designer is because design is a discipline that uses creativity to change the world. This thing is wonderful and an affirmation of idealism.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Xiaomi is a Chinese mobile phone manufacturing company that also has an ecological chain and other industrial chains.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
Musk’s design for commercial rockets is a design that combines engineering aesthetics and creativity for the future world.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
What has changed in the design? Is it beautiful? Is it a physical or spiritual design?
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
An important role in reimagining humanity’s future relationship with the environment.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
Intelligence, interaction, emotion, and future services are the direction of design, and the future of design is also the above four.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
Simplicity and science fiction are my favorite styles. In commercial design, I pay more attention to practicality and user experience.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
Passion and the ability to imagine, complemented by professional design skills.
What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
Barcelona chairs, butterfly chairs, moon chairs, Meng Fei style chairs, and Chinese dragon chairs.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
The pursuit of freedom at the spiritual level is an advantage, but at the spiritual level you have to bear the pressure of being independent.
What is your "golden rule" in design?
Passion and fantasy + professional engineering knowledge + superb expression skills
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
The starting point of thinking is a moment, and the final design takes 1 to 3 months to be presented.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I have been studying and working for 8 years, and have worked at JD.com, Lenovo, Xiaomi, and Rococo Design in China.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
Free expression, display of thinking. Mainly relying on dynamic effects to express the product at a deeper level, rather than traditional two-dimensional visual effects.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
I mainly feel the passion that design brings to my life, and I am able to clearly reflect on the development of this society and human beings.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
Engineers have shaped my ability to think about design usability, while art skills have established my fundamental aesthetic abilities. PC software has established basic design expression capabilities.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
My design career is constantly learning, learning different disciplines such as engineering, physics, mathematics, art, history, geography, etc., and integrating different knowledge dimensions into my design thinking.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
