Interview with Chien Yu Liu

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I started as an intern in an architect firm when I was a student, and later transferred to a company that imported original Austrian furniture as a product designer and design director of the interior design department. After accumulating various rich experiences, I founded it in 2013" SimpleUtmost Design " When I was young, I liked to decorate my own room, not just pasting posters and drawing graffiti, but making big moves to adjust the direction of the bed, the position of the storage cabinet, whether the desk should be against the wall or face the door, etc.. From this I found different conflicts and troubles in the process, so I discovered the wonderful feelings brought about by each change. I like this kind of challenge.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
In the residential space, my favorite design is the dining and kitchen space. Because it is an important field for family members to communicate, interact, and maintain emotions. Starting from the family, people are happy and happy, and complete the inner needs of each person's psychological level , Come to the society and have enough power to make better development in their respective fields and promote the beauty of the whole society.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
Often hungry and do not want to interrupt the joy and anxiety generated by design thinking.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
Is there any improvement in the previous deficiencies? Is it a good experience for users? Is it creating added value beyond the basic needs of users?
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
For society: to help people's life more convenient. For the environment: to reduce the ecological burden of the earth.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
No matter in every field, every era has the mainstream design of every era, but often design is a normal cycle. In the future, with the change of the times and the evolution of technology, the design will be continuously optimized and improved to meet the needs of that era. everything.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
Design inspiration often comes from the combination of customer needs and observations of things in life, and sometimes from the works of many great designers around the world. I have three suggestions for the cultivation of creativity: travel, read, and practice more.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
I will use simple style and humanistic style to describe our design style. This style will be a durable and timeless classic design, which will make customers feel at ease when they are in it. Its main feature is to return the dominance of the space to The client itself, and we just create a space that is full of functions but looks very simple so that the client can use it as he wants.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Taiwan. I think the cultural heritage of our country does not affect much about the design, but the country's real estate development policy has more influence. The pros and cons of the design process are mostly about the use of space, because building regulations and The pull of the number of pings that can be used will often receive the need to challenge the regulations.
How do you work with companies?
I work in a company I founded, mainly responsible for the role of design coordinator and execution.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
Let go of bold designs, prudently evaluated judgments, and careful and complete finishing touches. How does a company choose a good designer? I think this is a puzzle for every company. In the market, the recruits are often not 100%, and it needs to be trained and cultivated by each company to become a good designer. This is one of the contributions of design enterprises to society.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
When I receive the case, I will record all the requirements and go through them. I usually don’t start designing immediately. Instead, I let the ideas collide in my brain and give them a period of time to digest before starting the design.

Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
Since the introduction of the iPad, it has replaced the hand-drawn part on paper. Until the design starts, it is usually used on the computer to interact with AutoCad and SketchUP.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
Focus on doing one thing well in the moment and don't be disturbed by other chores.
What was your most important job experience?

Designing a private house is my favorite type of design, because it can fill in the fact that I can't own many houses at the same time but can satisfy various ideas about residential space, just like I once owned this wonderful house.
