Interview with Jisuke Matsuda

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
My inspiration came from ukiyo-e. I've always wanted to be a fine artist, so I aspired to become a fine artist within the world of design, which has strict rules.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
The main focus of my design studio is split between my student's web studio and my own workshop. The theme of my workshop is "Create Theatre Poster," and I create posters for this purpose.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
Last year's "Create Theatre Poster," this year's "Create Theatre Poster" again.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
Through competitions, companies can select designers suitable for their projects.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
First, I lay out the individual materials presented in a mind map, consider their arrangement, and then add emotion to it.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
Good points, attentive to detail. Bad points, attentive to detail
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
Color transformation. Because it's the miracle of Johannes Itten's color theory vividly occurring on a computer.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
The "Create Theatre Poster" project, where you can see bright, pop visuals revealing a new side of me.

Extended Interview with Jisuke Matsuda

What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
I'm not a legend, but I want to convey that people shouldn't imitate others.
What is your day to day look like?
For the children of Syria, I want to think of ways they can avoid being shelled.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
To express in pictures something that encourages and guides children suffering from war, man-made and natural disasters.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
I'm not successful so I don't know, but I value being conservative while also defying it.
What is your biggest design work?
Ikko Tanaka's posters, "Japan" (1986). The softness and gentleness of color and form.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
Loving people, expecting from people, being heartbroken by people. But still loving people without learning my lesson.
