Nastaran Akbari is an architect and founder of MAD Studio. She graduated from Eastern Mediterranean University in 2022 and developed her professional foundation through design-focused roles at architectural practices before establishing her own studio. Her work centers on creating meaningful architectural and product-driven experiences, where comfort, clarity, and human interaction play a central role. She approaches each project as a narrative process, aiming to design spaces and objects that remain intuitive, engaging, and memorable over time. Influenced by cultural heritage and architectural context, Nastaran integrates subtle references to identity and storytelling within her work. Interview with Nastaran Akbari

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I grew up in a relatively artistic family and was surrounded by art from an early age. Traditional Iranian art, including miniature painting and carpet weaving, was always present in my environment and had a deep influence on the way I see and think. I developed an interest in architecture very early, and becoming an architect was something I always aimed for. I've always wanted to be a designer and an artist, and from the beginning, I’ve worked hard to stay on this path and continue to grow in it with passion.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Mad Studio is an architectural design company known for its unique voice and vision. Central to our work is a commitment to creating spaces that are not only beautiful and functional but also meaningful—places that evoke emotion and tell a story. We believe that every project presents an opportunity to challenge conventions and propose new ways of thinking about and experiencing space. Our design philosophy is based on bold ideas, fresh perspectives, and creative execution. We approach each project with a mindset that questions the norm and seeks innovative solutions, all while reflecting aspects of our cultural heritage. Mad operates in three core areas: architectural design, product design, and construction. Each area offers a distinct perspective, yet all are grounded in the same foundational philosophy. We view design as a tool for inspiration and education. For us, it's not just about creating objects or buildings; it's about crafting experiences that leave a lasting impression. That is the essence of Mad.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
I enjoy designing both architectural and product projects that tell a story, engage the senses, and transform everyday experiences into something meaningful.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
The first thing I designed for my own studio, MAD, was The 3 Khan — a creative, cultural, and mechanical multifunctional kids' product for children aged 1 to 7. It was conceived as both an educational and playful experience, blending imaginative storytelling with problem-solving skills. Inspired by cultural elements and designed with sustainable materials, the project aimed to offer a unique alternative to mass-produced products by encouraging creativity, parent–child interaction, and a deeper appreciation for design.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
I focus on creating designs that balance functionality, emotional connection, and timeless aesthetics. Whether working on a large-scale architectural space or a small-scale product, I pay attention to how people will interact with it, how it will fit into their daily lives, and how it can remain relevant and sustainable over time.
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
When my designs come to life, I feel a deep sense of satisfaction and happiness. It’s the moment when all my effort and creativity come together, and I can see the positive impact of my work. I also feel that my design has successfully addressed the needs of the user or project and created a meaningful experience. This feeling motivates me to keep learning and improving my designs.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
When judging a design as good or bad, I first consider how thoughtfully it is designed and the purpose behind it. I look at what problems it aims to solve and whether it effectively addresses the needs of its users. Additionally, I pay attention to how people or the target audience interact with and use the design outcome, ensuring the design enhances their experience and meets practical requirements.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
In my creative journey, I find limitless inspiration in the vibrant tapestry of my audience—their diverse ages, unique needs, and varied perspectives. Each project I undertake is not just a design; it’s a thoughtful exploration of its context and its potential to leave a positive legacy for generations to come. By intricately weaving elements of Iranian culture and history into my work, I strive to create a rich narrative that resonates deeply, forging lasting connections that transcend time and age. Nature, too, plays a pivotal role in my philosophy. I believe in the responsibility of minimizing harm to our environment; each design is a step toward harmonizing with the natural world around us.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
My design style can be described as minimal yet emotionally engaging, blending clean lines with meaningful details that invite interaction. I was drawn to this style through observing how simplicity can enhance both function and user experience, making spaces and objects feel timeless rather than trendy. The main characteristics of my work are clarity, versatility, and a deep respect for context, whether that’s the cultural, environmental, or functional background of a project. My approach to design is research-driven and human-centered, starting from understanding the needs and behaviors of the end user, then shaping solutions that are both visually compelling and practically sustainable.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Iran, a country with a rich and diverse cultural heritage that spans thousands of years, from ancient architecture to intricate crafts and storytelling traditions. I have studied and embraced these influences, aiming to reflect them subtly in my design approach. The deep history, vibrant colors, and symbolic patterns of my culture often inspire unique forms, material choices, and narrative elements in my work.
How do you work with companies?
I collaborate with companies on architectural and product design projects by working closely with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, developers, and project managers. I focus on understanding the client’s vision, functional requirements, and constraints. Throughout the process, I ensure continuous communication and coordination to integrate design ideas smoothly into execution. This collaborative approach helps deliver innovative, practical, and high-quality solutions that meet both user needs and business goals.
