I work for an urban furniture design company Budero as a product developer. Budero's design approach always demands more from its staff. Even if we are making a product that is very simple and often made by different people, we think about what extra value we can add to it. In doing so, we constantly simplify operations. In-office communication, communication with customers, business perspective, etc. We believe it should be lean. Because we believe that a correct design is achieved by simplifying, not adding.

Interview with Akin Budakoglu

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
It is gratifying to develop something and create value. I guess it means I'm lucky to do this job without making a conscious choice.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
I have been doing this job professionally for 15 years, my company is only 4 years old. We are trying to find solutions to problems in terms of facilitating community and city life.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
As we are experts in urban equipment and urban furniture, we usually do not go out of here much.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
We love any project that satisfies. For satisfaction, I can say that the team is in shape, good chemistry and energy.
What was the first thing you designed for a company?
Let's think for Budero, the company I left was my first client. We designed a playground for them.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
I love to use simple techniques and materials in different ways. For example, facade cladding used in architectural works can be beautiful shells for playgroups.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
Manufacturability, visual integrity, anticipation of vandalism, user experience and benefits.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
I usually work with classical or organic music, during work I am motivated by thinking that there is a film or documentary filming about the story of the project in front of me.
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
This is a very welcome development. What is more pleasing is that they are mass-produced and preferred by people from different geographies.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
I think the criteria of utility, ergonomics and structural integrity it produces are sufficient.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
I think it touches the lives of people and other living things and makes their lives easier.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
Since I'm on the industrial and production side of design, I haven't had an initiative related to the exhibition yet.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
This is a good question. I can say that 90% of the job is to trigger creativity and the rest is to reveal the design.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
I absolutely love the simple, but I can't make such simple designs yet. I will learn :)
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I was born and live in Türkiye. I think that Turks are talented in professions that require creativity and practicality. Central and Northern Europe as a design language has always interested me, this approach generally affects me. But I have made many hidden details or proportions about Turkey in my designs.
How do you work with companies?
Companies usually get design services from us, we also give them the registration of original designs along with their projects. Recently, some companies are also asking for design consultancy, I think I need to develop a new business model.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
The designer should analyze and know the company very well. The company, on the other hand, should give the steering wheel to the designer, and should be able to think about good or bad design for its customer, not according to its own manners.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
We handle each project in three phases, and we come to the conclusion as a concept design, product development and application project.
Can you describe a day in your life?
I usually relax at the office, when I am at home and with my family, the day is tiring. For this reason, I may have a different routine than a normal person.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
I think a good designer should specialize. For this reason, I can recommend them to explore the sector or discipline they can specialize in before it is too late.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
Touching people's lives and making their lives easier are happy things. Occupational diseases (symmetry, order, etc.) can be negative things.
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
Tablet for sketches, cad programs and hardware, color chart (about which I can accept gifts)
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
It is definitely important to start with a plan, otherwise it may take time to get to the last part.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
A question about how much we can think before starting the project will take a long time if the right analysis is not done.
What was your most important job experience?
It was exciting to design the playground inside a 250-year-old restored structure in Istanbul in late 2022.
Who are some of your clients?
A few urban furniture manufacturers in Turkey, Germany, Oman and Australia, a few municipalities in Turkey and restoration, architectural firms
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
Since our area of ​​expertise is urban equipment and urban furniture, we usually take care to stay in this area.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
It's definitely better to work as a team, but I do the planning and business development alone.
Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
This and similar platforms are definitely necessary things about the development and encouragement of the profession.

How did you become a designer?
Birşeyler üretmek ve problemlere karşı çözümler düşünmek beni bu alanda tutuyor sanırım. Öte yandan hedef kitlemiz insanlar olduğundan sosyoloji, coğrafya ve kültürler ile çalışmak çok keyifli.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
Her yeni projeyi 3 aşamada ele alıyoruz. Bunlar konsept tasarımı, ürün geliştirme ve uygulama projesidir. Konsept tasarımında eskizler üzerinde beyin fırtınaları yapar, seçenekleri tartışırız. Ürün geliştirme aşamasında genellikle CAD programları devreye girer ve tüm detaylar ele alınır.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
Genellikle sürecin tamamını bir bütün olarak düşünürüm, bütün aşamaları programa paralel şekilde yönetmek ve sonuca gitmek kesinlikle heyecan verici.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
Detaylara dikkat etmek, hatta takılmak, Görselliğe ve renklere anlam yüklemek, Çevredeki problemlerin farkına varmak aklıma gelenler. Normal şartlarda bir insan için obsesif bozukluk olabilirken, tasarım için birer avantaja dönüşebiliyorlar.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
Kesinlikle değer üretmiş, insanların hayatlarına dokunmuş birisi olarak hatırlanmak güzel olurdu. Gelecekteki büyük projeler yerine yarını, bugün düşünerek yarının ihtiyaçlarını ve problemlerini çözmek için girişimlerim var. Belki bunları daha büyük kaynaklar ile daha somut olarak yapmayı isteyebilirdim.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
Multi-disipliner yerine belirli konularda uzmanlaşmış tasarımcıların daha başarılı olduklarını düşünürüm. Bu sebeple ilgilerini çekecek alan ve disiplinleri keşfetmelerini tavsiye edebilirim. Ayrıca tasarım operasyonlarında başkalarının ne düşündüğünden çok kendi düşüncelerini dikkate almaları ve işlerine gerçekten saygı duymaları önemli olacaktır.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
Güzel soru. Çok çalışma ve doğru çalışma kavramları artık kişiselleştirilmiş şeyler. Herkes kendi sınırlarını ve yetilerinin farkında. Ancak kesinlikle işe saygı duyulması gerektiğini düşünüyorum, bu benim için başarının başlangıcıdır. Ayrıca kimyası tutmuş bir ekip ve iş paylaşımı kesinlikle kariyer süresince deneyimlenmelidir.
What is your day to day look like?
Bir ekip yöneticisi ve şirket sahibi olarak güne toplantılar ile başlarım. Eğer çok yoğun bir gün değilse operasyonlar içerisinde yer alırım, onun dışında sadece beyin fırtınaları, brifler ve kritikler için zaman ayırabiliyorum artık. ekibin gün içerisinde gerçekten heyecanlandıran bir ürün geliştirme ortaya koyduğunu düşünürsem, onun nereye gideceğini hayal etmek çok keyiflidir. Şu an çok gururluyum ki, bu satırları yazmama sebep olan tasarım da bir zamanlar eskiz üzerindeyken aynı şeyleri hissetmiştim.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
Trendleri takip etmediğim söylenemez ancak çok da kulak asmam. Benim için önemli olan müşteri isteği ile kullanıcı faydası arasındaki noktanın beni tatmin edip etmemesidir. Eğer herşey yolunda giderse herkesi memnun eden bir iş ortaya çıkar, gitmez ise bulana kadar aramak gerekir.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
Güzel soru, sanırım gözlerimin ve hislerimin bu konuda geliştiğini söylemem gerekiyor. Belli bir tecrübeden sonra gerçekten iyi bir tasarımı üzeri çamurla kaplı olsa da görüyorsunuz yada bir kutunun içinde saklı olsa da hissediyorsunuz. Dolayısı ile görsel bütünlük önemli ancak ergonomi ve işlevsellikte önemsiz şeyler değiller.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
Bunu gerçekten hissediyorsunuz bazı zamanlarda. Hiçbirşeyin mükemmel olmadığı gerçeğine inanıyorsanız, basitlik arayışı sizi güvenli bir sona götürecektir. İyinin düşmanı her zaman daha iyisidir :)
What is your biggest design work?
Ekibim ile baştan yapılmış planına uygun bir şekilde devam ederek son bulmuş tüm projeler benim için başarı hikayesidir. Bunların sadece bir kısmı tasarım yarışmalarına gönderiliyor ve ödül alabiliyor. Göndermediklerimizin de bir potansiyel barındırdığını düşünürsek ölçüt ödül kazanmak anlamına gelmiyor.
Who is your favourite designer?
Tasarımı basitlik ve servis üzerine konumlandırması sebebi ile Steve Jobs sanırım.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
Türkiye de doğdum ve burada yaşıyorum. Türklerin yaratıcılık yoğun ve pratik gerektiren işlerde yetenekli olduğunu düşünürüm, bunu doğru bir planlama ile birleştirdiğinizde sonuçlar iyi oluyor. İlham alınan kültür konusunda ise orta ve kuzey avrupa her zaman ilgi çekici gelmiştir, bu bölgelere karşı çok ilgili olduğumu düşünüyorum.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
Bir vizyon uğruna ekip kurmayı ve yol almaktan büyük keyif duyarım. Ekibin aynı heyecan ve özveri ile hareket etmesi önemli bir kriter olduğunu düşünüyorum. Eğer iyi bir enerji yakalanırsa başarı çok zor olmaz.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
Bu konuda kesinlikle aktifim. Şöyle ki firmamızda yeni ve öğrenci tasarımcıların staj yapmalarını önemsiyoruz, ücretsiz mentörlükler sunuyoruz. Tecrübeli meslek sahiplerinin bilgi ve deneyimlerini yeni kişiler ile paylaşması bence bir erdem, ve bunu yapmak beni mutlu ediyor diyebilirim.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
İlk ödülüm değildi, muhtemelen sonuncu da olmayacak. Burada mutlu eden en büyük şey yaptığın işin seni hiç tanımayan, aynı dili konuşmadığın ve belki de hiç tanımayacağın insanlar tarafından takdir edilmesi sanırım.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
Orta öğrenimde makine ressamı olarak başladığım mesleğimi yüksek okul ve üniversitede tasarım teknik okulları ve ürün geliştirme olarak devam ettim. Şu anda profesyonel olarak 15 yıldır mesleğimi yapıyorum.
How did you become a designer?
Çevredeki nesneler yada olup bitenler hakkında bazı görsel ve yapısal problemler görüyor olmak bu mesleğin bir kusuru olabilir. Bu kusuru avantaja çevirerek harekete geçmek ve çözüm aramak en büyük motivasyonum sanırım.

Ne bir zorlayan oldu, ne de bilinçli seçtim. Ancak şundan eminim ki mesleğime büyük saygı duyuyorum.
