Interview with Amirali Meysami

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
I was born into a family of artists. My mother was a painter and my father was an artist, and I was interested in art since I was a child. I studied industrial design at university, and from then on, design became more serious for me.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Ten years ago, I became interested in jewelry design in the field of design and researched this topic and thought I could have my own brand with a different design than what was on the market. I established a jewelry design, production and sales company that designed the products myself and tried to find my place in the market with minimal and avant-garde designs. Now, after 10 years, this company has grown with more and more special designs and a silver jewelry line called sanjaaq seem has been added to our products.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
Tasks that are more related to people's daily lives and where form is highly significant.
What makes a design successful?
The visual impact of the design in the viewer's mind in terms of aesthetics and innovation.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
It is responsible for keeping the surrounding environment away from monotony and visual inconsistency, and for elevating the community's taste.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
The field of design is constantly changing, influenced by cultural and technological changes.
When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
My latest design was related to the display line for my silver jewelry, for which I held an unveiling event in December 2024.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
Geometry and architecture. In my designs, I adhere more to geometry and volume and always try to enhance my creativity by considering my surrounding environment in society.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
My designs are mostly structural, geometric, and architectural. The features of these designs involve the use of simple and complex shapes, which are often utilized in modern architecture and are employed to combine form and function.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Tehran. I was born and raised in Iran. Iran, with its thousands of years of civilization, has had various styles of architecture throughout the years, and undoubtedly, some of these works have influenced the formation of my design approach.
How do you work with companies?
Since I established my jewelry brand, I have been busy expanding it and haven’t had the opportunity to collaborate with other companies.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
Every day, numerous young and creative designers enter the field of design worldwide, and one way to discover a good designer can be through competitions and festivals.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
Unlike many others, when I start designing, I don’t choose a specific subject. I begin sketching freely until I reach my desired form and then develop it.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
A designer is always judged by others, which makes their job as a designer difficult, but at the same time, it makes them pay more attention to the details of the world around them
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
For me, design is an escape from daily emotions. It helps me free my mind from the issues and problems around me, which is why I don’t set a specific schedule for designing.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
There is no specific time; one can design a simple object for hours and still keep improving it.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
A single-product brand: designing a product that alone can define a brand
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
In the past, I used to design alone, but recently I collaborate on developing others' designs and also use the input of the creative designers in my team to develop my own designs.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
I have several works, and I’m trying to introduce a new collection from among them
