Interview with OBY

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
My design journey began with years of formal art and design education, where I discovered how purposeful design can transform everyday life and serve as a bridge for emotional expression. Early on, I realized design isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s a language of problem-solving and storytelling that challenges norms, connects people, and drives meaningful change. This understanding, paired with my fascination with how design shapes human experiences from brands to environments, solidified my path. While creativity has always been my compass, becoming a designer crystallized when I saw its power to turn ideas into tangible impact—a balance of curiosity, craft, and purpose I’ve pursued ever since.
Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
OBY Jewelry is committed to crafting eco-friendly and ethically made jewelry that blends historical inspiration with modern design techniques. We specialize in using sustainable materials and lab-grown diamonds to create pieces like our award-winning Finesse Diamond Earrings, which reflect both luxury and environmental responsibility. Working as a team, we aim to empower women by offering designs that are not only beautiful and intricate but also align with the values of sustainability and ethical fashion. Through our collaborative approach, we strive to inspire and make a positive impact in the world of jewelry design.
What is "design" for you?
For me, design is the art of enhancing life, transforming the ordinary into something more beautiful, intuitive, and meaningful. It’s a bridge that connects emotions, solves problems, and elevates everyday experiences, whether through a thoughtfully crafted object, a user-centric interface, or a space that inspires connection. At its core, design is purposeful empathy, turning ideas into tools that make living not just easier, but richer.
What kinds of works do you like designing most?
I’m most passionate about creating minimalist and emotionally resonant designs—works that are simple yet functional, where clean aesthetics meet intuitive usability. I gravitate toward projects that invite people to pause, connect, and reflect on their own emotions and experiences, whether through products, digital interfaces, or spaces that foster introspection. For me, the magic lies in stripping away the unnecessary to reveal designs that feel both deeply human and quietly transformative.
What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
My favorite design is the Finesse Diamond Earrings, a project that took nearly a year to develop from concept to final product, reflecting our team’s dedication and pursuit of excellence. Inspired by the elegance of Baroque architecture and the symmetry of Versailles gardens, the design captures a sense of timeless beauty and refined luxury. The earrings feature graceful curves, vibrant green emeralds, an intricate clock face, and lab-grown diamonds that together embody both sophistication and sustainability. This piece has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including a Bronze Award in our competition, the MUSE Design Awards Golden Award, and the French Design Awards Gold Award, as well as nominations at the New York Design Awards and the French DNA Design Awards. Combining cultural heritage with modern craftsmanship, OBY has created a unique jewelry piece that celebrates nature, style, and conscious fashion for today’s empowered women.
What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
I wouldn't say I have a favorite material, platform, or technology. As a designer, I appreciate beauty in all its forms, and I'm quite eclectic in my tastes; you could say I have a broad appreciation for everything that's beautifully crafted. Whether it's the latest technology, sustainable materials, or innovative platforms, if it contributes to creating something remarkable, I'm all for it. My focus is always on how we can blend different elements to produce designs that resonate with elegance and sustainability, like our award-winning Finesse Diamond Earrings, which beautifully combine lab-grown diamonds with timeless design inspirations.
When do you feel the most creative?
I feel most creative when I step away from routine and immerse myself in experiences that ignite curiosity—whether traveling to unfamiliar places, exploring art or nature, or discovering inspiration in unexpected details like architecture or vintage design. Hands-on experimentation, collaborative energy with other artists, and moments of unstructured play (like sketching freely or testing materials) also unlock fresh ideas. Creativity surges when I give myself permission to breathe, wander, and embrace the unplanned.
Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
We focus intensely on three pillars during the design process: thoughtful intentionality (ensuring every detail aligns with values like sustainability and authenticity), emotional resonance (crafting pieces that connect deeply through personal or cultural narratives), and iterative craftsmanship (refining through research, experimentation, and meticulous attention to quality). Beyond aesthetics, we prioritize designs that balance meaningful storytelling and timeless beauty, ensuring they endure not just as objects, but as symbols of purpose and connection.
What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
We feel a profound sense of purpose and connection, rooted in honoring cultural heritage, celebrating nature’s beauty, and weaving authenticity into every detail. There’s reverence for the stories behind materials and traditions, passion for blending artistry with sustainability, and joy in knowing each piece carries emotional resonance. Design becomes a bridge between craftsmanship and human experience, evoking both gratitude for the creative process and excitement for how these creations will become meaningful symbols for those who wear them.
What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
When my designs are realized at OBY JEWELRY, I feel a profound fulfillment—a blend of pride in the meticulous craftsmanship and gratitude for the journey of iteration, research, and collaboration that brought the piece to life. There’s joy in seeing abstract ideas transform into tangible beauty that honors sustainability and cultural heritage, and awe in knowing these creations will carry emotional weight for those who wear them. Most deeply, I feel connection: a quiet thrill in bridging artistry with purpose, and the certainty that each piece, refined through countless hours, now stands as a timeless symbol of authenticity and shared human stories.
What makes a design successful?
Witnessing a design come to life evokes a profound mix of pride in the craftsmanship, gratitude for the collaborative journey of iteration and refinement, and joy in seeing values like sustainability and cultural storytelling materialize into wearable art. There’s awe in knowing each piece carries emotional resonance for its wearer, and fulfillment in bridging creativity with purpose, transforming raw inspiration into timeless symbols of authenticity and shared human connection.
When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
When judging a design as good or bad, I prioritize three core aspects: simplicity (eliminating excess to achieve clarity and ease of use), functionality (ensuring it serves its purpose intuitively and effectively), and emotional resonance (whether it reflects the user’s identity or sparks a personal connection). Additionally, I value authenticity (does it align with meaningful values like sustainability or cultural integrity?) and craftsmanship (attention to detail and quality). A good design balances practicality with soul—it feels effortless and deeply human.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
From my perspective, a designer’s responsibilities to society and the environment include ethical material choices (prioritizing sustainability and minimizing environmental harm), cultural sensitivity (honoring heritage and avoiding appropriation while celebrating shared narratives), and inclusive intentionality (creating designs that are accessible, functional, and meaningful across diverse communities). Designers must also advocate for conscious consumption by crafting physically and emotionally enduring pieces, reducing waste, and fostering deeper connections over disposability. Ultimately, good design should uplift people and the planet—bridging aesthetics with purpose, sparking reflection, and inspiring a more thoughtful, harmonious world.
How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
The design field is shifting from problem-solving to driving ethical, sustainable, and inclusive change. Sustainability is now non-negotiable—prioritizing regenerative materials and circular systems. Designs merge function with storytelling, embedding cultural and environmental meaning, while balancing tech like AI with craftsmanship’s human touch. Collaboration shifts to co-creating with communities, centering marginalized voices. The future? Design as activism—challenging waste, bridging divides through shared narratives, and nurturing beauty that serves people and the planet.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
Our design inspiration is rooted in the intersection of science and nature, architectural precision, and ethical innovation. The intricate internal structures of lab-grown gemstones exemplify this fusion—their scientifically engineered yet organically evocative forms inspire designs that balance asymmetry with timeless elegance. We feed creativity by studying natural systems, exploring geometric patterns in architecture, and experimenting with sustainable, cutting-edge materials. Our sources span microscopic marvels, minimalist structural principles, and humanity’s evolving relationship with technology, ensuring each piece embodies both technical mastery and a reverence for the planet’s beauty.
How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
Our design style blends organic shapes with clean, architectural lines. Inspired by the unique balance of lab-grown gemstones, combining nature and science, and by a desire to create sustainable, ethical jewelry. The key features of our style are flowing, natural forms, ethical materials, and timeless elegance. Aim to make pieces that are beautiful and responsible. Our design approach focuses on collaboration, innovation, and careful craftsmanship. We work across different fields, using new ideas and techniques, and refine each piece until it’s just right.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in the United States, where the rich cultural diversity and creative energy influence my designs by blending global inspirations with local innovations. The access to a wide range of artistic influences and a strong emphasis on sustainability here enhances our design process. A significant advantage is the exposure to diverse ideas and support for eco-conscious initiatives, which aligns with our brand values. However, the fast-paced market and high competition can sometimes challenge the balance between creativity and commercial viability. Overall, living in the U.S. enriches our designs and supports our commitment to ethical and innovative creations.
How do you work with companies?
When working with companies, we focus on a collaborative approach that starts with understanding their vision and objectives, ensuring our designs align with their brand identity and values. Through open communication, thorough research, and iterative design phases, we integrate feedback to refine the product, leveraging our expertise in sustainable materials and innovative techniques. Our goal is to build productive partnerships that result in high-quality, impactful designs, reflecting a shared commitment to excellence and ethical standards.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
For seeking to collaborate with a designer, it's crucial to select one whose creative vision aligns closely with their brand ethos. An effective designer not only boasts an impressive portfolio but also demonstrates strong capabilities in understanding and enhancing a brand's message through creativity and practical design solutions. The key to a successful partnership lies in clear communication, mutual respect, and a shared vision, ensuring that the outcome not only meets aesthetic standards but also elevates the brand's identity and user experience.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
My design process begins with understanding the core concept or problem that needs to be addressed. I start by researching and gathering inspiration — whether it’s from art, nature, architecture, or cultural elements — to build a strong foundation for the creative direction. From there, I sketch out ideas, refine the most promising concepts, and begin developing detailed designs. Throughout the process, I focus on balancing aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability, while staying aligned with the brand’s identity and values. Collaboration and feedback are also essential, especially when working with a team or client, to ensure the final design not only looks great but also resonates with the intended audience.
Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
Young designers should create with purpose and empathy, staying curious and open to learning from diverse fields while embracing collaboration, imperfection, and sustainability; by grounding their work in real human needs and long-term impact, they can craft designs that are not only beautiful but also meaningful, inclusive, and regenerative.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
Being a designer comes with unique positives and challenges. On the positive side, it's a deeply creative and fulfilling career—you get to solve real-world problems, express ideas visually, and make a tangible impact on people’s lives. It also offers flexibility, diverse career paths, and the chance to work across industries. However, the negatives can include tight deadlines, subjective feedback, and the pressure to constantly innovate. There's also a risk of burnout, especially when balancing artistic integrity with commercial demands.
What is your "golden rule" in design?
My golden rule in design is to create with empathy, sustainability, and purpose. I believe in crafting timeless and meaningful pieces that honor cultural roots and respect the planet. Every design should be thoughtfully created as a powerful tool to enhance life and improve convenience. Ultimately, it's about bridging emotions and fostering connections through thoughtful expression, making each piece a reflection of our shared humanity.
What skills are most important for a designer?
1. Creativity: The ability to think outside the box and generate innovative ideas is crucial in design. 2. Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills help designers convey their ideas and collaborate effectively with clients and team members. 3. Empathy: Understanding the needs, emotions, and perspectives of users helps create designs that resonate and are user-centric.
Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
Designing can indeed be time-consuming, so as a team, we manage our workflow through structured planning, clear role assignments, and setting shared milestones. We break down each project into manageable phases, prioritize tasks based on urgency and impact, and use collaborative tools to track progress and stay aligned. Communication is key — regular check-ins help us address challenges early and avoid last-minute changes. By combining individual strengths with a well-organized process, we ensure efficiency without compromising creativity or quality.
How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
The time it takes to design an object from beginning to end varies based on the project's complexity and scope. For simpler projects, a few weeks might be sufficient, whereas more complex designs can require several months to over a year, especially when extensive research, prototyping, and multiple iterations are needed. For instance, our Finesse Diamond Earrings took nearly a year to perfect, involving continuous refinement to meet our standards of beauty, functionality, and sustainability. Effective time management, structured planning, and clear communication are crucial throughout this process to ensure alignment and quality.
What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
As a designer, the most frequently asked question I receive is, “How do you turn an idea into a finished design?” People are often curious about the creative process, from initial inspiration and concept development to the final execution. I explain that it involves research, sketching, iteration, collaboration, and constant refinement to ensure the design is both visually compelling and functionally sound, while staying true to the brand’s identity and values.
What was your most important job experience?
One of my most important job experiences was leading the design and development of the Finesse Diamond Earrings — a project that not only showcased our team’s creative vision but also deeply reflected our values of sustainability, craftsmanship, and innovation. This experience strengthened my ability to manage complex design processes, collaborate across disciplines, and stay committed to ethical practices under tight timelines. It was a defining moment that reinforced how powerful design can be when it aligns beauty, purpose, and responsibility.
Who are some of your clients?
Our clientele spans a wide range of individuals, but we particularly resonate with women who are passionate about ethical fashion and appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of various gemstones. Our designs are crafted to empower every woman, recognizing the boundless strength and potential they possesses. Whether it's through our sustainable materials, intricate designs, or the stories behind each piece, our creations speak to those who seek elegance with a conscience. We believe in celebrating women from all walks of life, offering them jewelry that not only enhances their style but also aligns with their values and aspirations. Through our work, we aim to inspire and support the incredible power and diversity of women worldwide.
What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
I enjoy working on design projects that blend aesthetics with sustainability and functionality the most. Creating pieces that not only look beautiful but also tell a story, promote environmental responsibility, and serve a practical purpose is incredibly fulfilling. This type of design work allows me to push the boundaries of creativity while ensuring that the end product resonates with people on a deeper level, enhancing their style and conscience. It’s particularly rewarding to see how these designs can empower individuals and make a positive impact on the world.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
Looking ahead, my focus is on continuing to push the boundaries of sustainable and meaningful design. I plan to explore new materials and technologies that align with eco-conscious values while maintaining elegance and functionality. Expanding collaborations with like-minded brands and working on projects that challenge conventional design approaches are also key priorities. Ultimately, the goal is to keep evolving as a designer and contribute to a more thoughtful, innovative, and sustainable creative industry.
Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
I work as a team, and I believe collaboration is essential to creating well-rounded, impactful designs. Each member brings unique perspectives and expertise, which enriches the creative process and leads to more innovative and thoughtful outcomes. Working together allows us to combine different strengths — from concept development and technical execution to sustainability and market understanding — ensuring that every design is not only visually compelling but also functional, meaningful, and aligned with our brand values.
Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
Currently, we are excited to delve deeper into projects that integrate ethically sourced materials with our brand’s philosophy. Our works-in-progress focus on utilizing innovative eco-friendly materials and sustainable practices that align closely with our commitment to ethical design. This exploration is aimed at pushing the boundaries of traditional design to create pieces that are not only visually captivating but also make a positive impact on the environment. We are passionate about continuing to develop designs that resonate with our values and inspire our audience, promising more exciting and sustainable creations to come.
