Design Interview
What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
Initial inspiration came from the object, its shape. I am talking about the water tower which was supposed either to be reconstructed (practical application was unknown) or renovated because it has lost its direct function long ago, but it still dominated the area. The initiative came from the Rector of Senezh Management Workhop, and our task was to do something with the object.
What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
It turned out that the cylindric shape of the object was very complicated for a composition. We had several examples of our foreign colleagues but the approach there was a little bit different and there was their own style. Therefore, we had to reinvent how to work with it. There were difficulties. The main starting point was the environment itself. The object was surrounded by a large forest and a beautiful lake. The task was to reflect a topic of climbing up. As a pattern we took Elbrus (the highest mountain in Russia, 5642 m). The context itself gave us a tip – movement from the ground to the sky. It is shown in the gradient – transition from green to blue. And the story here is about becoming a professional. It does not matter what you do, these are the social lifts which you take spirally. The object itself had a spiral staircase some time ago for climbing upstairs. That was also taken as a basis for the composition and the plot. The reverse plot with the hooks was based on another idea – support provided by Senezh Workshop to its students. Since we often work with industrial climbers, we know their aesthetics and culture. These guys are special kind of people, many of them climbed to Elbrus. We also wanted to pay certain respect to their work because they give us a lot of support being responsible for our safety. These two kinds of support (support by the Workshop and support provided to us) were reflected in these connected hooks.
What are your future plans for this award winning design?
Our job is done there but we keep monitoring what is going on there. The Workshop Rector will make this tower a climbing wall. This will be the primary function, and everybody who is accommodated at the venue can try it. Balconies and tips are already in place. These are the existing infrastructure elements, the small balconies used for cellular communication before but not anymore. They will be used for safety ropes. The second function is the completion stage for the students. You cannot call it a gala concert, there will be some kind of a prom. The spiral staircase will be reinstalled within the tower. There will be a view on the lake, the forest and the whole territory of the Workshop from the windows. It is a very picturesque location. This symbolical climbing of the students will occur once they complete their studies. Maybe they will throw something in the air. It is very interesting to watch what is going on without our participation.

- Unique Properties
- The owner of the ex water tower will be reconstructed to become a climbing wall. This is a bright dominating structure on the territory of Management Workshop where young executives and managers are trained. That is why upon completion of their studies young specialists perform a ceremonial climbing to the very top of the observation point. Spiral movement around the tower is a symbol of experience gaining process, symbol of life experience that is transforms into the into the stone of wisdom.
- Dimensions & Packaging

- Production Technology
- Surface cleaning and dismounting of obsolete elements of the towers construction; surface priming and painting it white; painting of surface with facade paint in gradient from green in the lower part to blue in the upper part; layout development in accordance with technical parameters and layout marking on the tower taking into consideration the viewpoints; artistic painting using aerosol spray paint; replacing old doors and windows; the job was done on trucks with aerial devices using safety gear.
- Design Challenge
- Complicated cylindric shape of the tower created most difficulties for development of composition and layout. It was necessary to find comprehensible images and create an integral plot to reflect the new function of the tower and Workshops territory en masse. The gradient of the staircase spiral shows movement from the ground to the sky, movement of a character from bottom to the top, growing up and achievement of the highest point. The characters are slightly deformed circularly for the proportions to be natural when viewed from ground level.
- Research
- The territory have changed its functionality. The tower is the highest object surrounded by a scenic lake and a pine forest. New function of the territory gave a hint for new ways of using the tower: upon completion of the studies, you can climb to the observation point for a ceremony. Outer surface of the tower required some facelifting. The structures attractivity gave the idea of creating an art object with the reflection of the meaning of its new function. Protruding balconies can be transformed into part of climbing equipment thus creating a full-scale climbing wall.
- Inspiration
- A mountain is a history in stone, it accumulates key events and the Earths experience. Experience is represented by knowledge and skills accumulated over time. And wisdom is a petrified experience. The steps spirally wind around the tower clockwise. The higher you are on a spiral of time, the more experienced and wiser you are. There was an idea to use the younger version of a climber in the lower part of the tower, who will become more adult in both literal.
- Project Duration
- This artistic object was presented at the Youth Forum on June 10, 2019 at the premises on Senezh Management Workshop in Solnechnogorsk town near Moscow. The Forums participants were youth policy experts from the whole country. Project works started in April 2019. Possible ways of using the tower and artistic design concepts were discussed. The project started late May 2019, overall implementation of artistic design took 10 days including all preparatory work required.
- Operation Flow
- The tower is located on the premises of Management Workshop. It is the highest point in the neighborhood that is why it is well visible outside the Workshop for the key plot to be targeted at the audience. The observation point has an excellent view on Senezh lake, Workshop territory and pine forest around. When used as the climbing wall, the painting will not be rubbed off and will have a long life.
