About Shkrub House Residential
The Shkrub house appeared out of love and for love — a loving couple with three kids. The DNA of the house includes the structuring aesthetic principles that find inspiration in Ukrainian history and culture inspired by Japanese wisdom.
The element of earth as a material makes itself felt in structural aspects of the home, such as the original thatched roof and in the beautiful and dense textured clay walls. The idea of paying homage, as a founding place, can be sensed throughout the home, like a delicate guiding thread.
Serhii Makhno's Shkrub House Residential exemplifies a profound dialogue between ancestral building traditions and contemporary spatial thinking, situating itself within the broader movement of organic modernism that seeks to reconnect inhabitants with elemental materials and primal architectural experiences. The monumental fireplace, hand-sculpted in a technique recalling ancient adobe construction methods found across numerous vernacular building traditions, serves as the spiritual and visual heart of this interior, its deliberately irregular surface texture inviting contemplation of the human hand that shaped it and the elemental earth from which it emerged. The curated wall of ceramic vessels transforms functional storage into a gallery of craft heritage, each pot and amphora carrying the memory of wheel-thrown traditions spanning millennia, their earth-toned glazes harmonizing with the overall palette while individual forms offer endless variation for the contemplating eye. The designer demonstrates remarkable sensitivity in introducing the vibrant circular rug as chromatic counterpoint, its abstract expressionist patterning in blues, reds, and yellows providing necessary visual tension against the otherwise monochromatic earth scheme, while its circular geometry softens the rectilinear room and echoes the organic forms of both fireplace and vessels. Technical accomplishment appears throughout in the seamless integration of materials, the rhythmic organization of the shelving grid, the considered placement of the rustic ladder that transforms practical access into compositional element, and the subtle lighting that reveals every textural nuance. This space invites consideration of how contemporary design might honor craft traditions while creating environments that nurture the human spirit through material authenticity and spatial warmth. What memories of ancestral dwellings, of hearth and home across generations, does such an environment awaken within the visitor's imagination?

- Production Technology
- The element of earth as a material makes itself felt in structural aspects of the home, such as the original thatched roof and in the beautiful and dense textured clay walls.
The combination of these two elements, not only gives the home a cocoon-like atmosphere but also pays tribute to Ukrainian culture; the thatched roofs were one of the hallmarks of rural Ukrainian homes and the clay walls were made using ancestral artisanal techniques used in the construction of traditional huts. - Project Duration
- The project started in March 2018 and finished in August 2019 in Kozyn, Kyiv region, Ukraine.
- Operation Flow
- Delicate and transparent is the concept of beauty that manifests itself in all the spaces of this house, which could be said to be the outcome of a journey back to one’s roots: seen in the elements, the architecture, and the objects.
- Research
- Serhii Makhno considers his journey to Japan to play a crucial role in the deep design cognition. The way that Japanese culture pays tribute to the beauty of its ancestral heritage, was like finding a special lens that gave him a different perception of the wealth of Ukrainian culture and the way it should be extolled
