About Radial Litter Bin
Radial is a litter bin designed for public streets and city spaces. The bin is made of powder-coated steel and aluminium and measures 770 by 400 by 1150 millimetres. A 25 watt photovoltaic panel on the bin charges an internal battery. The stored energy powers an air quality sensor, a fill level sensor and the lighting, which switches on at dusk. Data from the sensors is sent to city services, so emptying can be planned and residents can read air quality values. All added parts are removable for service and recycling.
Emerging from the contemporary discourse surrounding urban infrastructure aesthetics and environmental responsibility, this waste management solution exemplifies the sophisticated integration of civic functionality with considered visual design that characterizes the most thoughtful approaches to street furniture. The designer appears to engage with traditions of Scandinavian and Germanic industrial design, where restraint, material honesty, and human-centered consideration converge to transform utilitarian objects into dignified presences within the public realm. The tripartite waste stream separation system, clearly communicated through universally legible pictographic signage, reflects growing societal commitment to resource recovery and environmental stewardship, embedding educational and behavioral prompts within the object's formal language. Technical accomplishment manifests through the sophisticated resolution of competing requirements: the substantial volume necessary for practical capacity is tempered by softened corners and careful proportioning that diminish visual bulk while maintaining structural integrity. The asymmetrical angled top plane introduces dynamic character that distinguishes this design from conventional rectangular receptacles, suggesting forward-thinking innovation while the stable base and monolithic presence communicate permanence and reliability appropriate to civic infrastructure. The chromatic selection of sophisticated blue-gray demonstrates sensitivity to diverse urban contexts, offering sufficient visual presence for wayfinding while avoiding chromatic disruption of architectural environments. Surface treatment balances practical maintenance considerations with aesthetic refinement, the matte finish suggesting durability and quality manufacture. One might consider how such thoughtfully designed civic objects contribute to the overall experience of public space, potentially elevating everyday interactions and communicating collective values regarding environmental care and aesthetic consideration in the shared realm.

- Unique Properties
- The Enovio Radial is a smart trash bin equipped with a photovoltaic panel which supplies its additional functions. The product can fulfill an important information function in the city system by collecting data and transferring it to city services. The built-in 25 watt photovoltaic panel can power the air quality sensor, fill sensor and advertisement lighting. These functionalities will help the city service to get information about the bin requiring emptying and the residents to read the air quality measurements.

- Production Technology
- Radial trash bin is made of powder-coated steel and aluminum. All additional elements are easily removable, which allows for quick service and replacement of components. The photovoltaic panel is not an integral part, after the product has been used up all components can be recycled.
- Design Challenge
- The design task was to create a simple product that will not dominate in its surroundings and at the same time have a high aesthetic value.
- Project Duration
- the project was developed in Warsaw. Conceptual work lasted from February 2019. After many prototypes and tests, the project was finally implemented in January 2020.
- Operation Flow
- The Radial bin is fully autonomous. The functions do not require additional power supply because they are powered by a photovoltaic panel. The energy produced is stored in an internal battery. The energy is then used to power the smog sensor, bin fill sensor and backlight. The bin manages its energy itself. The backlight is activated in the evening when the sensor detects twilight
- Research
- The most important thing during product development was creating an intelligent energy management system. We wanted a relatively small solar panel to be able to power several functions at the same time, so we had to develop a system that would be responsible for turning them on only when needed.
- Inspiration
- the radial bin design was dictated by functionality. We wanted to create a product that, in addition to its basic function, will provide additional opportunities, that's why we equipped our trash bin with an air quality sensor. We designed a minimalist product, the trash bin was inspired by a simple letterbox, which is to encourage the use of the product.
