About Greenland Huangpu Center Office Working Space

Greenland Huangpu Center Office is an office interior located in Shanghai. The theme of the project is Office Plus, a concept that is people oriented, smart and innovative. The dynamic curve of the Huangpu River is abstracted into the space to strengthen the link between people and place. A low cost parametric design method creates an immersive setting. Thin wood panels are coated with translucent acrylic at the back and hold lighting elements inside, forming large corridor walls. The construction area is 1,980 square meters and the usable interior area is 1,580 square meters.

Situated within the evolving discourse of contemporary interior architecture that embraces computational design methodologies and biomorphic vocabularies, this award-winning reception environment by Junlong Yuan exemplifies the sophisticated integration of parametric formal strategies with refined material sensibility that has come to define exceptional corporate space-making in recent decades. The work demonstrates remarkable command of spatial orchestration, deploying an extraordinary ceiling plane whose rippled metallic surface suggests both the frozen dynamism of water in motion and the geological stratification of natural formations, while paired undulating walls of warm-toned vertical slats create an enveloping embrace that guides occupants toward the centrally positioned reception station. The designer's technical achievement lies in the seamless reconciliation of seemingly oppositional material characters, the cool industrial quality of the textured metal overhead plane finding harmonious dialogue with the organic warmth of timber-finished elements below, united through the mediating presence of illuminated architectural trim that traces the junction with elegant precision. This work engages productively with lineages extending from organic modernism through parametric contemporaneity, perhaps evoking the flowing spatial continuities pioneered by mid-century visionaries while embracing the computational complexities made possible through advanced digital fabrication technologies. The thematic content suggests meditation upon the relationship between the constructed environment and natural phenomena, the ceiling surface inviting associations with water, wind-sculpted terrain, or meteorological forces rendered permanent in architectural form, while the rhythmic wall treatment recalls bamboo groves, reed beds, or the repetitive patterns found throughout the natural world. The luminous white boundary element introduces symbolic dimensionality, potentially referencing concepts of threshold, transition, and the liminal spaces between material states. Viewers might contemplate how such environments shape human experience of work and gathering, considering the capacity of thoughtfully designed space to elevate quotidian activities through encounters with beauty, craft, and spatial generosity.

Unique Properties
The design follows three key points: Firstly, space serves people. The dynamic view of Huangpu River is fused with its artistic conception, increasing the emotional connection between space and people and stimulating inspiration and creativity. Secondly, functions serve people. The innovative technologies produce a more efficient workspace and enhance the communication by the Internet. Thirdly, create a new working ecological system that can refine working forms and offer personal solutions.

Production Technology
Graphical design methods create a beautiful and elegant space. The designers tailored specific new materials for the project. The wood panels are processed into thinner ones and are coated with translucent acrylic at the back. And then lighting elements are arranged inside of the panel, hence forming large areas of walls of the corridor. Looking at the wooden walls, people can see a series of lighting partly hidden and partly visible like the skyline of Shanghai.
Design Challenge
How to express the theme of OFFICE+ is the biggest challenge. The designers used low-cost parametric design idea to create immersive experience and artistic ambience. Inspired by the curve of Huangpu River, a three-dimensional space is created by connecting two-dimensional lines. Graphical design methods create a beautiful and elegant space. Moreover, the designers tailored specific new materials for the project. The wood panels are processed into thinner ones and are coated with translucent acrylic at the back. And then lighting elements are arranged inside of the panel, hence forming large areas of walls of the corridor.
Project Duration
The project started in February 2017 and finished in November 20, 2019 in Shanghai.
Operation Flow
The design abstracts the dynamic view and artistic conception of Huangpu River into the space, increasing the emotional connection between space and people while stimulating inspiration and creativity. The innovative technologies produce a more efficient workspace and enhance the communication inside and outside the company by the Internet. And it creates a new working ecological system that can refine working forms and offer personal solutions according to different working challenges.
Research
The designers hoped to inspire workers by giving them a workspace with creativity and present a more interesting, efficient and environmental space.
Inspiration
OFFICE+ is used as the theme of the project, which conforms to the people-oriented, smart and innovative working concept. The designers hoped to inspire workers by giving them a workspace with creativity and present a more interesting, efficient and environmental space.
