About Madam Wong Bar

Madam Wong is a bar interior located in Ipoh, Malaysia. The design recalls 1920s Shanghai architecture while adding a contemporary character. Entered from a quiet alley, the space covers 263 square meters and is arranged over two levels to create moments of privacy. Custom wall panels combine traditional motifs with laser cut metal sheets in a powder coated finish. Fan displays and terracotta warriors mark the entrance. Red brick, dark leather and metal accents form the material palette, and red brings warmth to the interior.

Unique Properties: The concept behind the project aims to create a setting reminiscent of 1920s shanghai while also combining a contemporary aesthetic. The space is found within an unsuspecting alley, yet once patrons step inside they are transported to somewhere else entirely.

Production Technology: The bar interior is characterized by the sumptuous material palette. red brick, dark leather and accents of metal finishes are combined to create a luxurious setting. Red is also used as a central motif to bring warmth to the space and highlight the architecture.
Design Challenge: The bar is located in a 30+ years old cinema site and next to back alley of a night club, which caused difficult for operation. It is challenging to have construction work in a old condition building, and have to prevent sound travel from the night club next to it in order to provide a cozy and isolated environment.
Research: The main research of the project focused on how to offer a glimpse into the past by resembling shanghai 1920s architectural constructions, yet with a contemporary twist, the idea can be seen throughout the particular motifs, such as the custom-made traditional motifs wall panels with contemporary material such as laser cut out metal sheet in powder coated finish.
