About City Ambassadors School Typographic Brand Identity

Interesting stories are hidden behind every turn of the old streets and it is impossible to associate the City with any one minimal set of recognizable symbols. While studying the city, the future ambassador discovers it anew, like a student discovers a primer at school. For the construction of the identity, a typographic solution was chosen, based on the principle of typographic eclecticism: the Old National script, interspersed with the cursive script and recognizable fonts of the avant-garde artists. The color scheme is laconic-bright red.

Grand Interview

Your innovative approach to typographic eclecticism in the City Ambassadors School Typographic Brand Identity beautifully merges Old Russian script with avant-garde elements - could you elaborate on how you developed this unique visual language and what it represents about Moscow's cultural heritage?

The typographic approach for the *School of Ambassadors of Moscow* identity was inspired by the rich cultural and historical layers of Moscow itself. I aimed to create a visual language that speaks to the city's multifaceted nature, where tradition and modernity coexist. By merging Old Russian script with avant-garde elements, I sought to reflect both the historical depth and the dynamic energy of Moscow.### **Development of the Visual Language**The process began with an exploration of Moscow’s history, from its ancient roots to its 20th-century avant-garde movements. The Old Russian script was chosen to evoke the city's deep historical connection, linking it to its roots and rich heritage. This script carries a sense of timelessness, representing the city's long history and its foundational cultural elements. To balance this with Moscow’s forward-thinking, innovative spirit, I incorporated elements from the work of Sergei Chekhov, a prominent Russian avant-garde artist. Chekhov's geometric and modernist influences provided a bridge between the old and the new, capturing the energy of a rapidly evolving city. By combining these elements in the typographic system, I was able to craft an identity that feels both rooted in the past and alive with contemporary energy.### **What It Represents About Moscow’s Cultural Heritage**This typographic eclecticism symbolizes the blend of generations that define Moscow. The city is not just a historical place; it is one that continuously evolves while holding onto its traditions. The juxtaposition of the Old Russian script with the avant-garde fonts mirrors the city’s ability to preserve its cultural identity while embracing modern influences and innovation. The style represents a living, breathing city, where past and present meet to create something entirely new. It speaks to the future generation of city ambassadors—those who will discover, appreciate, and communicate the complex story of Moscow to the world. The combination of old and new typographic styles also resonates with the mission of the *School of Ambassadors*: to teach future ambassadors to translate their personal, local knowledge into global stories that reveal the city in fresh, exciting ways. In essence, the typographic identity isn’t just about visual design; it is about telling the story of Moscow’s rich, diverse cultural heritage, where every corner of the city offers a narrative of the past and the present, all waiting to be shared with the world.

The City Ambassadors School Typographic Brand Identity demonstrates remarkable versatility across different media - how did you ensure the design system would maintain its impact and legibility while scaling from small items like pens to larger applications?

To ensure the *City Ambassadors School* typographic brand identity maintained its impact and legibility across various media, from small items like pens to larger applications, I focused on scalability and clarity while preserving the design's unique character.1. **Simplifying core elements** The key was to identify the primary typographic elements that would work well at various sizes. While the mix of Old Russian script and avant-garde elements was essential to the identity, I ensured the primary typefaces were legible at smaller scales. For items like pens and business cards, I used simplified versions of the typography when necessary, maintaining the essence of the design but improving legibility.2. **Establishing a clear hierarchy** A clear typographic hierarchy helped maintain balance across different sizes. At smaller scales, I reduced the size of bold elements and adjusted text to remain legible without cluttering the design. For larger applications, I could use the full typographic system to showcase more intricate elements, ensuring the identity was expressive and bold.3. **Flexible grid and spacing system** I developed a grid and spacing system that could adapt to various sizes. By defining specific padding and spacing guidelines, I ensured the design would remain balanced and cohesive whether on small business cards or large billboards. This consistency helped maintain clarity and legibility, regardless of the scale.4. **Contrast and color** The bright red color helped ensure visibility, particularly at smaller sizes or when there was visual competition. The red acted as a strong visual anchor in both small and large formats, creating a unified, bold presence across all media.5. **Testing across multiple formats** The design was tested across various applications to check how it scaled from smaller to larger formats. This iterative process allowed for adjustments to typography and spacing, ensuring that the identity maintained its visual strength and readability across all media. In conclusion, by focusing on flexibility, hierarchy, and legibility, I created a design system that remains impactful and clear whether used on small promotional items or large-scale applications.

Your research into Moscow's typographic history clearly influenced the City Ambassadors School Typographic Brand Identity - could you share some of the most surprising discoveries about historical fonts that shaped your final design decisions?

During my research into Moscow's typographic history, I uncovered several surprising and inspiring discoveries that significantly influenced the design of the *City Ambassadors School* identity.1. **The Evolution of Russian Typography** One of the most intriguing findings was the evolution of Russian typography from the Old Russian script, which was deeply connected to the country’s medieval and religious traditions. These ancient forms are not just visually unique but also carry a sense of history and authenticity. I had not initially realized how such fonts could evoke a deep cultural resonance, and this realization led me to incorporate Old Russian script elements into the design, giving the identity a historical foundation that connects modern Moscow with its past.2. **Avant-Garde Movement’s Influence** Another surprising discovery was how influential the Russian avant-garde movement had been on typographic design. Artists like El Lissitzky and Vladimir Mayakovsky used bold, geometric letterforms and innovative approaches to typography to challenge traditional visual languages. This influence felt very much in line with the modern, dynamic energy of Moscow today. The idea of merging these avant-garde elements with the more traditional Old Russian script created a compelling contrast that spoke to the city's blend of historical depth and contemporary vibrancy.3. **The Connection Between Typography and Russian Identity** I also found that typography in Russia has always been closely tied to the national identity, particularly in the way fonts were used during different political and cultural periods. From Imperial Russia’s formal typefaces to Soviet-era modernism, each era had a distinct typographic language. This helped me understand that typographic choices are not only aesthetic but also culturally significant. Incorporating fonts inspired by these historical periods into the *City Ambassadors School* identity allowed me to tap into Moscow’s layered history, blending the city’s past with its present in a meaningful way.4. **The Role of Handwritten and Cursive Fonts** Lastly, the influence of handwritten and cursive fonts, which were prominent in the Russian literary tradition, was a surprise discovery. These fonts bring a personal, human touch to the design, suggesting that the city itself is something to be explored and personally experienced, much like how an ambassador would convey personal knowledge about Moscow. Integrating cursive elements added an element of warmth and individuality to the identity, balancing the more rigid, formal aspects of the Old Russian script and avant-garde fonts.Incorporating these elements allowed me to create a typographic identity that speaks not just to Moscow’s visual history but to its spirit—a city that is rich in tradition yet always evolving. The combination of historical fonts with avant-garde influences mirrors Moscow’s unique place in both Russian and global culture.
