About Pingyuan Mysterious Stone Art Museum
Pingyuan Mysterious Stone Art is a museum for the exhibition and trade of rare stones. The building stands on a quiet site, with the eastern side facing a stone garden and open plains along the rest of the perimeter. The museum is shaped as one large stone divided into four parts, each holding a separate exhibition. A central atrium with skylights links the four halls and forms a circular visitor route. The main facade is made of stone panels, while large glass areas and an overhanging structure open the southern and eastern sides. A public terrace offers views toward the stone garden.
Tengyuan Design's Pingyuan Mysterious Stone Art Museum represents a distinguished contribution to contemporary museum architecture that draws upon deep traditions of geological contemplation and mineral reverence while employing cutting-edge structural expression. The building's commanding form emerges from its waterside setting as a carefully orchestrated sequence of interlocking volumes whose angular geometries evoke the crystalline structures of natural stone formations, establishing an immediate conceptual connection between architectural container and exhibited content. The primary mass demonstrates remarkable technical achievement in its dramatic cantilever, which projects assertively over the reflecting pool to create a gesture of welcome and visual intrigue that draws visitors toward the entrance sequence. The facade treatment employs precisely coursed stone cladding arranged in a rhythmic grid pattern that transforms the building envelope into a meditative surface inviting close observation of materiality and craft. Glazed interventions punctuate this mineral skin strategically, introducing transparency at the ground plane to reveal interior activity while a bold triangular aperture carved into the upper mass creates a framed viewing platform that suggests the building itself functions as a lens through which to observe its surroundings. The chromatic restraint of the warm stone against cool atmospheric conditions demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how architecture engages weather, time, and seasonal variation. The reflecting pool serves multiple functions: it extends the visual presence of the building through mirrored doubling, creates a contemplative threshold between public realm and cultural institution, and establishes a condition of stillness that prepares visitors for aesthetic encounter. One might observe how the architects have achieved that delicate balance between monumental presence appropriate to civic cultural institutions and approachable human scale that invites entry. - The site lies in the quiet spot with the eastern side facing the stone garden and the rest of the perimeter surrounded by plain.The function forms a cultural tourism resource advantage featuring gem collection,art exchange,rare stone trading and auction.Combined with the local cultural characteristics and Longmen stone carvings in Pingyuan city,the project will become a resounding name card of the cultural industry in Dezhou.

- Production Technology
- The Southern and Eastern sides of the podium used a large overhang structure to form a transparent space using large area of glass.The main facade is consisted of 550mm*1100mm stone panels.
- Design Challenge
- The project has simple shape but highly focus on the structure which is the biggest challenges. Because of cutting the corners closed to the ground, how to make the overhanging structure come true becomes the most difficult problems for architect and engineer to think.
- Project Duration
- The project started in January 2019 in Pingyuan, Shandong Province of China and will be finished in September 2021.
- Operation Flow
- Due to the large flow of people in the commercial street on the north side, the entrance on the north side is set at the same time, and the height difference is solved through the steps to enter the two-storey atrium. The atrium is opened with skylights and has tropical rainforest IP exhibition which brings good publicity , and effectively activates the business value. The circulation line on the south side reaches the stairs on the north side to the second floor, and the exhibition halls on the second floor are connected in series through corridors. The public terrace in the southeast corner offers excellent views to visitors looking towards the stone garden to the southeast.
- Research
- During the high development of urbanization, the most important responsibility for architects is to respect the local natural environment and cultural background. We try not to use obtrusive materials and shapes and try to restore the simplicity of the stone itself. Taking into account the tour route of the exhibition, we think it is best for the four exhibition halls to be spread out in all directions, connected by the courtyard of light in the middle, so as to form a better circular route.
- Inspiration
- Due to the owner has an obsession with all kind of rare stones,we take the concept of jade which has the appearance of primitive simplicity,magnificent connotation.We treat the whole museum as a huge stone,then break it into four parts for different exhibitions.We integrate the atrium with light into the project to connect four stone exhibitions.In contrast to the surroundings,the museum is like a beacon,a huge mysterious exhibit itself,attracting people to coming.
