About Ripples Material Room
Ripples is a materials showroom in Taichung City, Taiwan, covering 60.5 square meters. A former office space was converted into an open showroom that also serves as a shared workspace for customer meetings. Two convex shapes on the ceiling form the starting point of the design. Systematic wood decor of 8 millimeters is thinly cut and bent to create curves and fold lines that extend across the ceiling and the walls. A total of 200 products are displayed, so visitors can see and touch real textures. The modular materials can be copied and assembled in other cities.
Jacksam Yang's Ripples Material Room represents a distinguished achievement in contemporary retail and exhibition design, demonstrating how commercial spaces dedicated to material specification can transcend mere functional requirements to become immersive aesthetic environments that elevate the act of selection into an experience of discovery. The design exhibits remarkable sensitivity to the relationship between container and contained, creating a neutral yet warm envelope that allows diverse material samples to be appreciated on their own terms while maintaining a cohesive spatial identity. The undulating ceiling-mounted light fixture, from which the project derives its evocative name, introduces an element of organic fluidity that softens the orthogonal precision of the storage systems, suggesting perhaps the rippling effect of a design decision propagating outward into built reality. Yang demonstrates considerable sophistication in orchestrating material transitions, allowing concrete surfaces to converse with wood elements across temperature gradients that enliven what might otherwise become a monotonous neutral environment. The presence of human figures engaged in the fundamental activities of looking, touching, and considering reminds viewers that such spaces exist ultimately in service of human creativity and decision-making processes. Iconographic references to both Eastern spatial philosophies with their emphasis on void and presence and Northern European design traditions with their celebration of natural materials and functional honesty seem to coalesce in this interior. The careful curation of display objects ranging from geometric solids to organic specimens suggests a taxonomy of form that invites systematic exploration. Viewers might contemplate how the physical environment in which design decisions are made influences those decisions themselves, and how spaces of selection become participants in the creative process.
Press Kit
- Unique Properties
- Being rich in details and textures, the ultimate craftsmanship is integrated into the emotions of contemporary time and organized around aesthetics and innovative concepts to create an exclusive and unique materials showroom while realizing the concept of design and future life.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- 60.5 ㎡
- Tags
- marbles, steels, chevron flooring, systematic wood decor, bespoken lighting, dried floral, edge banding
- Production Technology
- Overcoming the vertical and horizontal quality of systematic wood decor, we use processing, cutting, and bending in order to fulfill the design of curves and fold lines and apply it to the wall and the ceiling in the space.
- Design Challenge
- Systematic design can be duplicated and reproduced in large numbers and in different places. All the building materials of this shared workspace can be copied and assembled in other cities to achieve modulization.
- Project Duration
- The project started in December 2020 and finished in March 2021 in Taichung City, Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- Calculating the ratio of wood decor and plan the traffic of the space with the display of the owner’s 200 products in the showroom, we let users directly experience and feel the real proportion of the products, veins, textures, and effect in order to fulfill the end result of feeling the materials in the first hand.
- Research
- We redesign the office space into an open materials showroom where it can be used when a customer meeting is required and to create a shared workspace experience. By exploring characteristics of materials through senses, discovering wonders in creativity, and realizing the possibilities in the process of design in full, we expect to fulfill the meticulous and intuitive practicality of everyday life and see people as the essence of the space.
- Inspiration
- Using two convex shapes on the ceiling as the starting point, the 8mm systematic wood decor is thinly cut and bent to achieve curves and fold line design and then extends to the walls, which cleverly explores the possibility of system wooden decor, redefine and break away from the norm. The spirit of craftsmanship and the design ideas are realized in the space where a full and abundant texture is shown freely in a unique way.
