Interviews

Grand Interview

Your innovative approach to capturing Porto's traditional architecture in Prt Architecture Photography creates a dreamlike aesthetic - could you elaborate on how you developed this distinctive visual language that earned you the Bronze A' Design Award?

Porto’s architecture has a charm that feels almost frozen in time. The pattern of the tiles give the buildings such a unique character. When you’re in the city you can feel the surreal, dreamlike atmosphere and I wanted to capture that within my work.

The pastel color palette in Prt Architecture Photography transforms Porto's historic buildings into surreal compositions - what inspired your choice of these specific tones and how do they connect to the city's unique character?

The pastel palette mirrors the light-hearted spirit of Porto and its colorful facades. I chose these tones to bring out Porto’s vibrant charm and create an inviting, dreamlike world within each frame.

Your work in Prt Architecture Photography masterfully balances architectural documentation with artistic interpretation - how did you navigate between preserving the buildings' historical authenticity while creating your signature dreamlike atmosphere?

I left the buildings quite raw and gave them only a minimal retouch. So pretty much every imperfection is still visible to the viewer, the background/sky however is strongly retouched which creates the dreamlike atmosphere.

Design Challenge
Even tho it seems all buildings are unique and existing once on a fist glance, it is not the case. Many of them use the same (ish) tiles or the same build style. The second challenge were the very narrow streets that made it difficult to stand away enough from the building to photograph it. Lastly removing people, signs or other distracting elements in the retouch was very time consuming.
Research
Porto is one of the oldest European centres, located along the Douro River estuary in northern Portugal and its most famous for port wine (named after the city). The magnificent bridges, the medieval quarter of Ribeira with its narrow, cobbled streets, shops and cafes and characterised buildings with ornate baroque interior and rich, gilded carvings make the city very unique.
Inspiration
The 'accidentally Wes Anderson' vibe is all over the city and instantly inspiring. Porto's traditional buildings are perfect to create a surreal, pastel dreamworld with clouds.
Project Duration
The photos were taken during a long weekend end January 2022 and finished editing in the beginning of March 2022. So far they are living only in digital spaces on several creative platforms.
Operation Flow
The images could be used for an exhibition in a gallery.
