About Blockazo Chocolate Bar for Sharing

Blockazo is a one kilogram chocolate bar designed for sharing. The large bar is broken into big chunks before eating, so that several people can serve themselves. The design takes inspiration from the construction industry and from concrete, because the bar is like a building that must be demolished before it can be consumed. The surface is divided into rhomboid shapes that guide the breaking. The bar is made of chocolate with peanuts. The packaging is made of a flexible mix of polypropylene and polyethylene.

Emerging from the rich tradition of applied geometric design in everyday objects, this confectionery work by Guillermo Dufranc demonstrates how mathematical principles can transform functional products into objects of contemplative beauty. The designer appears to draw upon the legacy of optical and kinetic art movements, particularly the perceptual investigations pioneered by figures such as Josef Albers and M.C. Escher, translating their explorations of spatial ambiguity into the unexpected medium of molded chocolate. The tessellated surface employs the venerable isometric cube pattern, a geometric figure that has fascinated artists and mathematicians since antiquity for its inherent visual instability, where the brain perpetually alternates between reading the forms as projecting outward or recessing inward. Dufranc's adaptation of this phenomenon to confectionery design reveals sophisticated understanding of how relief depth, surface finish, and tonal value can enhance perceptual effects typically achieved through two-dimensional graphic means. The irregular perimeter generated by the tessellation's natural geometry rejects conventional rectangular packaging formats, instead allowing mathematical logic to dictate form in a manner suggesting organic crystal growth or geological formation. The central hexagonal cartouche bearing embossed text serves multiple functions simultaneously, providing brand identification, establishing visual hierarchy within the pattern's democratic repetition, and offering a moment of stability within the perceptual flux. The work's materiality, warm milk chocolate with its associations of comfort, indulgence, and shared pleasure, adds emotional resonance to the intellectual rigor of the geometric concept. One might consider how this design transforms the quotidian act of breaking and sharing chocolate into an engagement with mathematical beauty, inviting contemplation of how pattern, perception, and pleasure intersect in designed experience.
