About Villa Madonna Hotel Extension

Villa Madonna is an extension of a hotel in Alpe di Siusi, Italy, completed in 2021. The form of the extension follows the lines of the surrounding landscape, and the main facade is aligned toward the summit of the Sciliar mountain range to frame the view of the peak. Stone, glass and wood are used, all sourced from supply chains with low carbon dioxide output, for durability and high energy performance. The extension holds a reception, a refreshment area and reading and conversation rooms. Daylight enters through openings that preserve the material continuity of the perimeter.

Villa Madonna Hotel Extension by JOSEPH DI PASQUALE ARCHITECTS exemplifies a contemporary approach to alpine hospitality architecture that honors regional building traditions while confidently asserting modern spatial and material sensibilities, the work achieving what might be termed a dialogue across time wherein the language of local vernacular construction, with its characteristic timber balconies, steeply pitched roofs, and rendered masonry walls, finds thoughtful response in the horizontal extension's refined minimalism, the architects appear to have developed a formal vocabulary that abstracts vernacular elements, translating the warmth of traditional wood construction into precisely detailed vertical slat cladding while the irregular stone base echoes centuries-old alpine building practices of grounding structures firmly to mountainous terrain, technically the work demonstrates sophisticated resolution of complex geometries, the angular roofline extending in dramatic cantilever creates dynamic tension while the continuous band of integrated lighting transforms the building envelope into an element of luminous presence at dusk, this illumination strategy suggests awareness of architecture's theatrical dimension, how buildings perform differently across diurnal cycles, the generous corner glazing opens interior spaces to landscape while maintaining the intimacy appropriate to mountain hospitality, throughout the composition one observes careful calibration of proportion and scale ensuring the contemporary addition neither dominates nor defers but rather engages in respectful conversation with its architectural neighbors, the work invites contemplation of how regional building cultures might evolve, honoring accumulated wisdom while embracing contemporary possibility.

Unique Properties
The morphology of the extension was determined by the purpose of identifying meaningful relationships with the natural context. This approach has allowed the adoption of an architecture that, while strongly differentiating stylistically and linguistically, manages to converse harmoniously with the more traditional character of the building to which it is juxtaposed.

Production Technology
The criteria that governed the choice of materials was to use technical materials that would ensure durability and high energy performance, which, however, would take up the logic of tradition in mountain buildings: stone, glass and wood.
All materials used come from a supply chain with low carbon dioxide production.
Design Challenge
The most complex part was to design a building envelope that would integrate with the pre-existing landscape and 'hotel, but at the same time could take on with new architectural significance.
Project Duration
Built in 2021, Alpe di Siusi, Italy
Operation Flow
The new extension is integrated into the existing architectural context through a new re-functionalization of spaces.
The recepion, a refreshment area, and different reading-conversation rooms were included in this new shell.
Light and views of the outdoor space filter into the interior through physical discretizations of the infills without affecting the perception of their material continuity over the entire perimeter of the extension.
Research
The design research was done by observing the surrounding area and bringing back into the architecture itself the lines that make up the surrounding landscape.
Light was used as a natural element of intersection and connection between interior and exterior, thus generating an architecture that could fit in and become a homogeneous part of the landscape.
Inspiration
The main inspiration was determined by the orientation toward the summit of the Sciliar mountain range. The axis identified in this way determines the alignment of the main façade of the intent space with the goal of capturing the view of the peak. From an architectural point of view, the intervention relates to the existing building by interpreting the basic compositional role using only technical materials that would, however, resume the logic of tradition in mountain buildings.
