About Silver Lining Restaurant and Bar
A good bar is a perfect place to spice up your life and sometimes fix your mood, whether you're out with friends or flying solo. This case is a fusion bar located on the first floor of an old building in the center of Taipei. Combining the owner's preference for arches and exotic touches, the design visualizes the concept, of a Night through the Valley. Dark green tones fill up the space, while the columns in the center divide the room into kitchen and seating sections. With somewhat limited space, two inverted L-shaped areas allow for smooth interior traffic and a cozy dining experience.
Hsiao-ching Hu's Silver Lining Restaurant and Bar presents a compelling meditation on the dialogue between organic form and architectural geometry, positioning itself within contemporary biophilic design traditions that seek to reintegrate natural elements into urban commercial environments while maintaining sophisticated aesthetic refinement, the installation of dramatically twisted branches, appearing as if salvaged from ancient forests or shaped by centuries of wind and weather, serves as the compositional and conceptual heart of the space, their silvery surfaces suggesting both the patina of age and the luminosity of precious metal, a material transformation that elevates the natural into the realm of the precious, the chromatic strategy demonstrates remarkable restraint and intentionality, with the designer orchestrating a symphony of cool grays and muted greens that creates an atmosphere of quiet luxury without ostentation, the globe pendant luminaires function as both practical illumination and poetic punctuation, their warm glow establishing intimate zones of light that invite lingering and conversation, the spatial choreography reveals sophisticated understanding of hospitality program requirements balanced against experiential aspirations, with the elongated bar providing convivial gathering space while the banquette seating offers more intimate refuge, the arched aperture visible in the middle ground introduces architectural softness while simultaneously suggesting depth and mystery beyond the immediate visual field, mirrored ceiling treatments expand perceived volume while creating kaleidoscopic reflections that multiply the impact of both branch installation and lighting elements, textured wall finishes in variegated green tones suggest organic growth and weathered surfaces, establishing material continuity with the naturalistic sculptural elements, one might observe that the work engages timeless questions about humanity's relationship to nature, about finding sanctuary and beauty within constructed environments, and about the transformative power of thoughtful design to elevate everyday experiences, viewers are invited to consider how such spaces might shape human interaction and emotional experience.

- Production Technology
- Frosted glass is used for the windows to create an image of swaying moonlight passing through the shadows of woods that cover the entire valley, luring passing travelers in. Along with the green and gray, accessories and construction methods that imitate nature also enhance the tranquil experience, creating a moment of peace among the mountains.
- Design Challenge
- Delicate use of reflections, just like moonlight shining down through the leaves, can be found in both the acrylic mirrors that hang from the ceiling and hand-made lamps on the bar. From simple but precise design, along with creative use of complex materials, a magical space comes into existence at a seemingly mundane street corner.
- Project Duration
- The project finished in May 2021 in Taipei City, Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- The rugged, unsaturated touch on the dark green walls simulates the misty views in a forest. The texture on the floor is created with a customized organic paint to visualize a stream that flows through the valley.
- Research
- A straight bar extends all the way into the room. Behind the bar and the double tables, gypsum is used to form a rough surface on the walls. With belt lights hovering over, the texture creates a unique sense of wilderness, mimicking weathered mountain walls.
- Inspiration
