Your innovative combination of fish leather and gradient leather in the Orizzonte 01 Zip Around Wallet creates a stunning representation of sea and sky - could you elaborate on how this dawn-inspired design concept evolved from your early morning fishing experience?
The idea of transforming discarded fish skin into luxury leather is not originally mine. My inspiration came from encountering fish leather and resonating with the phrase “sustainable manufacturing that does not waste the blessings of life” from those involved in fish leather production. This connection led me to consider creating items using fish leather.One day, while fishing before sunrise and watching the ocean during the “blue hour,” when the world is bathed in blue, I wondered if I could create leather items that express the waves of the sea and the changing sky through fish leather and gradient effects.Leather from cattle and other animals is also a by-product of meat culture, which means it is, in fact, a sustainable material. By using fish leather derived from "fish," which is commonly found on Japanese dining tables, it becomes easier to visualize the concept of a by-product.Through fish leather, I hope to encourage many people to reflect on waste and the by-products of meat culture in leather products.
The Orizzonte 01 Zip Around Wallet showcases an impressive use of discarded fish skin - what specific technical challenges did you encounter when working with this sustainable material, and how did you overcome them to achieve such a refined finish?
Fish leather has an uneven surface, which causes some problems when sewing, so the protrusion of the scale pattern was slightly shaved off to make the fish leather less uneven.Otherwise, there were no differences from other leathers and few technical issues.

The precise engineering of the coin purse space height in the Orizzonte 01 Zip Around Wallet was the result of an iterative design process that balanced functionality, aesthetics, and the constraints of working with fish leather. Here's an overview of how we arrived at this solution:1. Prototyping and TestingRefinement Rounds: Multiple prototypes were developed, each slightly adjusting the height of the coin purse walls. These tests involved:Daily Use Trials: Simulating real-world usage by adding varying coin types and testing for ease of access and secure closure.2. Fine-Tuning the DesignZipper Placement: The zipper was positioned with millimeter precision to avoid snagging on coins while maintaining a smooth glide.The result is a coin purse space that seamlessly integrates into the Orizzonte 01 Zip Around Wallet, delivering a refined experience that underscores our commitment to usability without sacrificing the wallet’s luxurious aesthetic.

- Unique Properties
- The concept is "Carry the scenery with you". The fish leather represents "the waves of the sea", while the gradient leather represents "the changing colours of the sky". The colour variations are named "L'ora blu (Blue Hour)"," L'ora magica (Magic Hour)" and "Il notturno (Night Scene)", with the sea and sky of each hour expressed in fish leather and gradient leather.

- Production Technology
- Fish leather made from discarded fish skin and gradient leather dyed in layers of colour one by one using dyes. In addition, the edges are beautifully finished with high strength by Leather Edge Creaser.
- Design Challenge
- After continually searching for a way to achieve a beautiful gradation and repeatedly making samples, we were finally able to create a gradation leather that we were satisfied with.
- Research
- By making effective use of fish skin as fish leather, which would otherwise have been thrown away, the company believes it is possible to reduce the burden on the environment. In addition, the design not only uses fish leather, but also makes use of the fish scale pattern.
- Inspiration
- When I was fishing before dawn and saw the blue hour landscape, I noticed that the scale pattern on the fish leather resembled ocean waves and came up with the idea of a leather item that represents the sea with fish leather and the sky with gradient leather.
- Project Duration
- The project started in November 2021. Samples are completed in December 2022, with pre-orders starting in February 2023.
- Operation Flow
- The height of the coin purse space inside is adjusted in millimetres so that it does not move into the banknote compartment when the zipper is closed. Top-quality zippers for smooth opening and closing.
