About Iceland Volcano Museum
Iceland Volcano is a museum located in the Myvatn region of Iceland. The circular form is inspired by the volcanic craters, hot springs and lakes of the area. An elliptical volume and two intersecting slopes create a continuous space that links indoor and outdoor areas. Three ring paths are offered: an interior gallery, a walkable roof used as an observation deck, and an outdoor park loop trail with large-scale sculptures. A reflecting pool sits at the centre. The facade is formed by louvers whose orientation varies to control sunlight.
Yuting Zhang's Iceland Volcano Museum presents a compelling meditation on the relationship between architecture and landscape, exemplifying contemporary approaches to cultural institutions that seek harmony with their environmental context rather than dominance over it. The design demonstrates sophisticated understanding of earth-integrated construction traditions, wherein the building volume submerges into the terrain, minimizing visual intrusion while creating protected interior environments suited to the demanding subarctic climate. The elliptical plan appears to reference volcanic caldera formations, establishing a formal dialogue between the museum's commemorative purpose and the geological phenomena it interprets for visitors, this conceptual alignment between form and content representing a particularly thoughtful approach to institutional architecture. Technical accomplishment manifests in the extensive glazed envelope that wraps the interior courtyard, creating a luminous heart within the building that simultaneously connects occupants to the sky above while providing sheltered observation of the surrounding landscape through carefully framed apertures. The rooftop treatment extends the usable landscape over the building volume, maintaining visual continuity of the snow-covered terrain while offering an elevated vantage point from which visitors might contemplate the vastness of the natural setting. The rendering captures a moment of exceptional atmospheric beauty, the twilight hour transformation when artificial interior illumination achieves chromatic equilibrium with diminishing natural light, producing the characteristic warm-against-cool temperature contrast that has fascinated artists from the Romantic period forward. Small figures distributed throughout the composition affirm the human scale of the architectural intervention, their presence transforming abstract formal gestures into inhabited space and inviting viewers to imagine their own movement through these contemplative galleries. What meanings might emerge from the experience of descending into the earth to learn about forces that violently reshape landscapes, and how might such spatial journeys alter one's understanding of geological time and human presence within natural systems?

- Production Technology
- Advanced architectural techniques have been employed to ensure that the museum's design is both visually stunning and environmentally sustainable. The repetitive, visually permeable façade connects the museum to its surroundings while maintaining a sense of enclosure. The louver orientation on the sinuous façade varies constantly to optimize sunlight conservation and resembles the linear patterns of classic Icelandic architecture.
- Design Challenge
- The Iceland Volcano Museum posed creative challenges, requiring us to harmoniously blend architecture with Myvatn's natural landscape while providing an immersive experience. Balancing preservation and visitor engagement was crucial. We overcame obstacles by researching historical and social perspectives, and considering external factors such as laws, production possibilities, and technological advancements. Our design emphasizes sustainability and materials that resonate with the environment, resulting in a unique, engaging space that showcases Myvatn's beauty.
- Project Duration
- 2019-2020 in Iceland
- Operation Flow
- Visitors are drawn into a unique journey through the museum, beginning with a downward ramp that leads to the tranquil interior gallery. They can then explore the walkable roof, which offers panoramic views of Myvatn's breathtaking landscape.
