Positioned within contemporary sustainable packaging discourse, Chien-Cheng, Liu's Win the Future Free-Range Egg Gift Box demonstrates remarkable synthesis between ecological responsibility and refined aesthetic presentation. The design appears to honor a significant commemorative milestone through its integration of celebratory visual language with everyday agricultural produce, elevating humble organic eggs to objects worthy of ceremonial exchange. The molded pulp cartons exemplify current material innovation in sustainable packaging, their cellular architecture providing both protective function and visual texture that speaks to environmental stewardship without sacrificing visual appeal. The primary gift box introduces sophisticated restraint through its near-monochromatic palette interrupted solely by a decisive diagonal gesture in vermillion, a compositional choice that creates dynamic tension within otherwise serene rectangularity while potentially referencing Eastern calligraphic traditions of the decisive brushstroke. Typography combines multiple script systems in vertical arrangement, suggesting cultural bridging and international accessibility while maintaining hierarchical clarity. - The design of the gift box was led by Chihe, incorporating ESG principles throughout, from printing to packaging. The printing uses soy-based ink avoids repetitive hot stamping for enhanced recyclability and reflects a commitment to sustainability. - The paper tray is an environmentally friendly packaging material designed by combining eggshells with recycled paper pulp. By reusing eggshells, considered waste, the material composition of the eggshell paper tray is approximately 85% recycled pulp and 15% eggshell powder. Based on this ratio, it is estimated that for every ton of eggshell paper tray compared to traditional recycled paper, there is a reduction of 495.9 kilograms of carbon emissions.

We recognize that sustainability is a future trend. To help our clients succeed in this trend, we prioritized sustainability in both design and materials. In the design, we reduced unnecessary post-processing, such as hot stamping or selective varnishing, and used environmentally friendly plant-based ink. This approach makes the packaging easier to recycle and increases the potential for reuse. In material research, we considered types of paper containing calcium carbonate, which is the main component of eggshells. Chinyi Eggs Technology, a major egg supplier in Taiwan, produces kilotons of waste eggshells annually. This inspired the idea of using waste eggshells to make paper, transforming waste into packaging material in line with the cradle-to-cradle sustainability concept. Through repeated testing with suppliers, we ultimately succeeded.
According to data from suppliers and public sources, producing one ton of paper requires approximately 20 trees. From the Ninth National Forest Resources Inventory Report, we know there are 994 trees per hectare of plantation forest, with an average annual growth of 6.15 cubic meters. Dividing these figures gives an annual growth of 0.00619 cubic meters per tree, leading to a carbon sequestration rate of 11.32 kilograms per tree per year. Therefore, producing one ton of paper corresponds to 226.4 kilograms of carbon emissions. Using these calculations, we determined the carbon reduction achieved by this packaging design.
The core values of Chinyi Eggs Technology are freedom, functionality, and sustainability. Freedom represents free-range eggs, functionality refers to eggs enriched with health-beneficial elements, and sustainability is the vision for the future. The Golden Horse 60’s core value is also the future. Combining these values, the central theme of this packaging is “sustainability is the future.” The design concept, inspired by Tic-Tac-Toe, features three free-range eggs arranged diagonally and six conventionally farmed eggs, symbolizing “freedom winning the future.” The choice of sustainable materials conveys the message that freedom and sustainability are the future.
Conventional inks are complex and may contain heavy metals and harmful substances. Sustainability requires every decision, big or small, to be environmentally friendly. We chose earth-friendly soy-based ink and avoided post-processing like hot stamping or lamination. This ensures the packaging can be directly recycled, significantly increasing its chances of being reused.
The Golden Horse gift boxes are distributed at the award ceremony and must be elegant without inconveniencing the guests. Inspired by the clutch bags of actresses, the design is compact and refined, complementing various styles and encouraging stars to share photos with the product. Structurally, the egg box has a buffer space at the bottom for impact absorption and reinforced support at the top to ensure safety. The square box allows for stackable transportation, and by design, each shipping box can accommodate four more units than traditional designs, reducing carbon emissions during transport.

Following the success of the Golden Horse egg packaging, we are now implementing a full-scale packaging redesign to extend this concept across all channels, amplifying the impact of carbon reduction efforts
SDG 12 - Ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns: This collaboration achieved circular economy principles, enhanced Chinyi’s eco-friendly image, and increased consumer recognition of its sustainable products. The innovative design fundamentally changes resource utilization by transforming waste eggshells into paper trays and mixing PP and RE-PP materials for circular use. This reduces waste, carbon emissions, and resource demand while improving resource efficiency.SDG 9 - Promoting industry, innovation, and infrastructure development: This project showcases Chinyi’s R&D strengths and creates new market demand, paving the way for Chinyi to enter emerging sustainable markets. The innovative use of eggshell powder in eco-friendly materials highlights Chinyi’s technical expertise and opens opportunities for new product development and expanded market influence.

With Chinyi Eggs Technology producing kilotons of eggshell waste annually, there is vast potential for broader application. We hope this successful case inspires more designers to integrate sustainability into industrial designs and show consumers that recycled products can be stylish, attractive, and eco-friendly.
