About Chongqing Bowchuang Store
Chongqing Bowchuang is the interior design of an automobile sales and service store in Chongqing, China, with a total construction area of 25,000 square meters. The space brings together vehicle display, relaxation and social areas, so customers can spend waiting time in comfort. The design refers to the local landscape and culture, with columns shaped like tree trunks and misty visual effects. In the atrium, a lift and staircases connect the floors. Polymer clay, lightweight faux stone panels and ultra thin flexible stone veneer reduce the use of natural stone.
Positioned within the evolving discourse of experiential retail architecture, Horace Davids Engineering Design's Chongqing Bowchuang Store demonstrates how contemporary commercial spaces may transcend transactional function to achieve genuinely contemplative spatial character through masterful manipulation of light, geometry, and organic presence. The design appears to engage with traditions of sacred architecture, where oculus configurations have historically connected terrestrial interiors with celestial realms, here reinterpreted through the vocabulary of parametric modernism and integrated illumination technology. The elliptical ceiling aperture, emphasized by concentric luminous rings, establishes a visual and spiritual focal point that elevates the act of entering the retail environment into something approaching pilgrimage, with the helical staircase functioning as processional pathway between experiential zones. Technical accomplishment is evident in the seamless integration of LED lighting systems within architectural surfaces, creating layered luminosity that models spatial depth while maintaining the pristine white envelope that characterizes the design language throughout. The biophilic intervention of substantial interior planting along mezzanine terraces introduces necessary chromatic relief and organic textural counterpoint, suggesting attentiveness to human psychological need for natural presence within built environments. The compositional sophistication demonstrates understanding of how radial symmetry creates contemplative focus while dynamic circulation elements prevent spatial stasis. This work invites consideration of how retail architecture might offer sanctuary and aesthetic nourishment alongside commercial function, proposing that the environments where we acquire goods might simultaneously elevate our experience of dwelling.

In some areas, the columns are shaped like tree trunks, conjuring the imagery of an ecological forest. Moreover, efficient traffic flow planning among various zones ensures that consumers can easily access a diverse range of services.
- Project Duration
- The design phase for the 4S Store started in Shanghai in October 2022, followed by refurbishment starting in Chongqing in June 2023. The entire project was completed in November 2023.
- Operation Flow
- Inspired by the unique style of Hongyadong in Chongqing, the atrium has undergone a transformation: the original staircases have been replaced with a lift accompanied by staircases. This change not only optimizes space utilization but also offers customers multiple options to access different floors. Moreover, each floor has been thoughtfully planned with comprehensive functional zones for display, relaxation, and interaction, enhancing the overall customer experience with improved engagement.
- Research
- Many 4S stores lack creativity in their interior design and are somewhat limited in functionality. In addition to vehicle sales, customers also crave an inviting environment to occupy themselves during maintenance and repair periods, rather than enduring dull waiting sessions. Recognizing this need, this interior design breaks free from conventional spatial constraints. It integrates diverse functional zones for practicality and delivers a truly memorable and distinctive aesthetic experience.

- Drawing inspiration from the natural landscape and rich culture of Chongqing, this design creates an interior space characterized by visual depth, dynamic energy, and vibrancy. By integrating distinctive features of Chongqing, such as its foggy atmosphere, urban traffic flow planning evocative of a 8D cyberpunk world, ecological forest concept, and karst landform, this 4S store stands as a pioneering urban art landmark.
