About Red House Exhibition

Red House is an art installation created for a lantern festival in Taipei. The work forms a tunnel corridor of eight sides, built from stainless steel pipe and laser cut metal sheets. Each side carries carved images of the Ximending area placed in chronological order, starting with the Red House building of 1908. Computer controlled LED lights illuminate the panels and brighten the street. Fluorocarbon baking paint protects the surfaces for long term display. Visitors walk through the corridor and read the history of the city through pictures rather than text.

CHIH LIANG LIU's Red House Exhibition represents a compelling synthesis of traditional East Asian paper-cutting craft and contemporary environmental installation practice, transforming an urban passage into an immersive journey through cultural memory spanning over a century of collective experience. The work demonstrates exceptional command of spatial narrative, employing the ancient art of jianzhi silhouette cutting at architectural scale to create a processional experience that simultaneously honors heritage craft traditions while embracing the possibilities of modern fabrication and integrated lighting technology. Each freestanding portal panel functions as a chapter in a visual chronicle, with meticulously rendered scenes depicting architectural landmarks, everyday life, culinary traditions, and entertainment culture organized by decade from the early 1900s through the 2020s, inviting viewers to recognize the cyclical nature of cultural continuity alongside transformation. The technical achievement lies not merely in the precise execution of intricate silhouette work but in the sophisticated calibration of spatial rhythm, where the repeating circular apertures create an acceleration of visual tempo that draws visitors forward while the warm amber LED illumination transforms the installation into a lantern-like beacon during evening hours. The chromatic strategy proves particularly effective, with the deep vermillion of the structural frames carrying traditional associations with celebration, good fortune, and sacred threshold while the stark white of the illustrated panels evokes the delicate ephemeral quality of paper craft. One might observe how the installation negotiates the relationship between intimate narrative detail and monumental environmental presence, rewarding both distant appreciation of its architectural impact and close examination of individual scenes that reveal moments of human connection, labor, celebration, and daily life across generations.

Unique Properties
Located in bustling tourist destinations, the city memory corridor features ancient architecture as the main theme to tell visitors about the city's history and culture through huge metal corridors and metal carved picture books. Following the development and changes of the times, many scenery in the city has disappeared. However, as we pass through this huge metal corridor, those pictures in the book that convey the memories of each era will awaken precious images left in the memories of former residents or visitors.

Production Technology
The metal sheet is laser cut through the conversion of archives, and the overall corridor structure is designed using the structural mechanics method of architecture. By calculating the energy consumption and diffusion angle of LED lights. The interior and exterior are coated with highly protective paint using fluorocarbon baking paint, ultimately making it an art piece that can be displayed and easily maintained for a long time.
Design Challenge
This project is an attempt to understand and interpret the exact history and culture of the centuries through various local organizations and scholars. Due to the size of the work produced, the project had to give up the textual interpretation of these events and scenes and use images that the general public or domestic and foreign travelers can understand. At the same time, Its location was a street with a constant flow of tourists, and the biggest challenge was how to make the artwork and the street become one, and to exhibit the artwork in a harmonious way.
Project Duration
The project started on October 17, 2023 in Taipei, Taiwan and was completed on February 10, 2024. It was exhibited at the 2024 Taipei Lantern Festival on February 17, 2024.
Operation Flow
The art installation visualizes historical and cultural images, constructing an independent three-dimensional space. Through the interaction with people, it enables people to read the relevant history of the city and pass it on to the next generation through storytelling, forming an intangible inheritance of historical and cultural heritage.
Research
The Red House, a historical building built during the Japanese rule era, is used as the main viewpoint for reading the development of Ximending, so the first metal installation of the Red House, which was built in 1908, is used as the starting point of the tunnel corridor. In total, there are eight sides of the tunnel gallery, each of which is chronologically placed with different images of the development of the Ximending area, telling the story of its own development.
Inspiration
The Lantern Festival is a highly anticipated and celebrated event in Taiwan. With the development of the times, this festival has slowly become one of the most important celebrations in the cities. In a modern city, providing a lively celebration that preserves the historical and cultural essence of the city has become a unique work of art. We use visual graphic installations to achieve this goal, At the same time, the installation can also decorate the streets with colors and increase the brightness of the lighting, and become a business card of the city.
