About Symphony Orchestra Music Hall
Symphony is a concert hall interior designed for symphony orchestra performances. The project is the reconstruction of an existing space of 1000 square meters with a complex geometric shape, located in Vilnius, Lithuania. A modular approach was used, based on standard elements such as rhombuses, triangles and smooth and ribbed planes. These components were assembled and adjusted to combine acoustic quality with visual appeal. The walls are made of plasterboard covered with oak veneer, with light strips in between. The wall patterns recall ancient Lithuanian motifs.
Marius Mateika's Symphony Orchestra Music Hall exemplifies the contemporary approach to performance venue design that seeks harmony between acoustic excellence and visual poetry, positioning itself within a tradition of concert hall architecture that recognizes the inseparability of sonic and spatial experience. The work demonstrates remarkable sensitivity to the psychological dimensions of musical performance, creating an environment that appears to embrace both performer and audience within a unified architectural gesture. The designer's material choices reveal sophisticated understanding of acoustic principles while establishing an aesthetic vocabulary rooted in natural warmth, with extensive wood paneling serving the dual purpose of sound diffusion and visual comfort. The illuminated linear patterns traversing the walls suggest multiple readings, perhaps evoking the abstract visualization of sound waves, the interconnected nature of orchestral harmony, or simply the desire to transform functional acoustic surfaces into visual instruments. The suspended ceiling reflector, with its carefully angled planes and integrated lighting, demonstrates technical precision married to sculptural ambition, functioning simultaneously as acoustic tool and architectural centerpiece. The chromatic discipline throughout, maintaining warm neutrals punctuated only by luminous white lines, creates a contemplative atmosphere appropriate for concentrated listening while avoiding visual distraction from the musical experience. The gentle curve of seating and balcony suggests physical embrace, positioning the audience as participants rather than mere observers in the musical ritual. One might observe how the dark ceiling plane creates a sense of protective enclosure, a night sky beneath which the warm wooden embrace of walls and stage glows with invitation. The work invites contemplation of how architecture might serve as instrument, shaping not merely sound but the emotional receptivity of those who gather within its bounds.

- Unique Properties
- Main objective was to achieve an entirely new acoustic standard, tailored specifically for symphony orchestra performances. We adopted a "lego constructor" philosophy, we meticulously devised several standard elements such as rhombuses, triangles, and both smooth and ribbed planes. Subsequently, we methodically assembled the interior using these components, adjusting their placement—adding or subtracting as necessary—to achieve a harmonious blend of acoustical excellence and aesthetic appeal.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- This is not a new hall. It is a reconstructed 1000m2 space with a complex geometric shape.

- Production Technology
- For the wall decor, we used plasterboards covered with oak veneer, with LED strips in between. Oak parquet flooring. Ceilings painted plasterboard.
- Design Challenge
- We adopted a "lego constructor" philosophy, wherein, in collaboration with acousticians (the acoustic aspect of the project overseen by the "Akustika plus" team), we meticulously devised several standard elements such as rhombuses, triangles, and both smooth and ribbed planes. Subsequently, we methodically assembled the interior using these components, adjusting their placement—adding or subtracting as necessary—to achieve a harmonious blend of acoustical excellence and aesthetic appeal.
- Project Duration
- The project started in September 2019.
Reconstruction completion March 2023.
The renovated building is located in Vilnius, Lithuania. - Operation Flow
- The primary focus of the symphony orchestra hall is the listener. Our main objective was to achieve an entirely new acoustic standard (the object is reconstruction), tailored specifically for symphony orchestra performances of the highest caliber.
- Inspiration
- We were inspired by ancient Lithuanian ethnic motifs and the old runic alphabet. We decided to integrate ethnic elements into the modern new concert hall to make the space more mystical. You can find these motifs on the decorated walls.
