About Shanghai New Bund Mansion Experience Center

Shanghai New Bund Mansion is an experience center located in a low-density residential area along the Huangpu River. The interior covers 1200 square meters and is divided into two zones. The south side holds reception and display areas inspired by the quiet luxury of a Shanghai-style hotel. The north side follows an outdoor garden concept and encloses four model rooms. A green velvet curtain, an arc-shaped stone wall, a black reception desk and a mirrored ceiling shape the visitor route. The design adapts a constrained office building into an open and inviting space.

Jian Zhang's Shanghai New Bund Mansion Experience Center exemplifies the contemporary synthesis of architectural innovation and atmospheric design that characterizes the most accomplished hospitality and residential presentation spaces of the current era. The reception environment presented here demonstrates a masterful command of spatial choreography, wherein visitors are received within a curving embrace of warm-toned vertical panels that suggest both the refinement of traditional craftsmanship and the precision of contemporary fabrication techniques. The designer appears to have conceived the ceiling plane as a canvas for sculptural light, suspending an intricate network of geometric wireframe elements punctuated by luminous nodes that evoke astronomical phenomena, perhaps referencing the historical association between celestial observation and human aspiration toward elevated living. The angular reception desk commands attention through its bold geometric silhouette, its faceted planes catching and releasing light in ways that suggest both permanence and dynamism, while its illuminated base creates a sense of weightlessness that belies its monumental presence. The integration of living elements through the carefully positioned orchid arrangement introduces biophilic warmth, softening the architectural rigor with organic grace. The controlled revelation of adjacent spaces through the aperture at right suggests a carefully orchestrated visitor journey, inviting progression from this dramatic threshold into realms of greater intimacy and hospitality beyond. The chromatic restraint exercised throughout, with its sophisticated interplay of warm bronze, cool charcoal, and strategic amber accents, creates an atmosphere of understated luxury that speaks to discerning sensibilities. One might contemplate how such spaces mediate between public arrival and private dwelling, between the aspirational and the achievable, and how architecture itself becomes a form of hospitality when conceived with such evident care for the emotional experience of those who enter.

Production Technology
The tour begins in the elevator hall, enveloped by a luxurious green velvet curtain. Upon entering the south side, visitors are greeted by a sophisticated welcome area featuring an elegant arc-shaped stone wall, a sleek black reception desk, and twinkling starry lights. The ground is inlaid with guiding signs that direct the flow of guests, while a mirrored ceiling enhances the space, creating an illusion of height in the dimly lit environment.
Design Challenge
One of the challenges was adapting the functional space of the experience center to an office building environment. Office buildings are often enclosed spaces with core-centered layouts, limited floor heights, and restricted floor area and depth, which contrasts with the open and inviting atmosphere required for the experience center. Through various interior design strategies, the designer resolved this conflict.
Project Duration
Located in a new luxury residential area along the Huangpu River, the development stands as one of Shanghai's few exclusive low-density neighborhoods. It harmoniously blends ecology, parks, waterfront living, and commerce, embodying the quintessential Shanghai style.
Operation Flow
Moving through the space is like walking through a cinematic experience, engaging with friendly scaled architectural and spatial elements, and revealing a future lifestyle rooted in Shanghai’s heritage.
Research
The elevator hall serves as a transitional link, balancing the flow of movement and anchoring the space with visual focal points at both ends of the corridor. The ceiling design, in particular, showcases innovative solutions to spatial limitations, making this project a prime example of adaptive design within a constrained environment.
Inspiration
Guided by the theme of time, the designer incorporated classic elements reminiscent of Old Shanghai, reinterpreting them with a modern sense of fashion and architectural refinement. This approach allows the space to serve as a "translation of local culture," blending traditional Shanghai charm with contemporary design.
