About Firefly Lamp

Firefly is a lamp that can be used both on a wall and on a desk. The lamp is made with an opaque glass globe and a wooden base shaped by lathe turning. A rod of 20 millimeters in diameter connects the globe to the base, and the globe rotates 360 degrees, so the lamp also suits sloped ceilings. Two light sources are included: a low intensity light for use as a nightlight and a second light under the globe for reading. The total height is 350 millimeters. The form recalls old lamps used indoors before electric lighting.

Mahya Hoseini's Firefly Lamp stands as a compelling meditation on the intersection of craft tradition and contemporary lighting design, situating itself within broader conversations about material authenticity and sculptural functionality that have animated decorative arts discourse since the mid-twentieth-century studio craft movement. The luminaire demonstrates sophisticated formal intelligence in its integration of contrasting material vocabularies, the deeply textured cylindrical body suggesting worked leather, bark, or naturally aged organic material paired with the smooth translucent crown element that appears to float or emerge from its textured enclosure, this material dialogue establishes immediate visual and haptic interest while serving the functional imperative of light diffusion. The compositional achievement lies particularly in the resolution of opposing formal languages, the geometric clarity of the cylindrical base form counterbalanced by organic irregularity in surface treatment, the vertical thrust of the overall silhouette anchored by the graceful curves of brass or bronze handle elements that describe elegant arcs suggesting both structural necessity and gestural flourish. Chromatic sophistication manifests in the warm earth-toned palette spanning rich chocolate browns through golden amber to soft cream, a color harmony that evokes natural materials, autumnal landscapes, and the warmth of hearth light while maintaining contemporary restraint and avoiding nostalgic pastiche. The technical execution rewards close examination, particularly in the surface treatment of the primary body where texture creates dramatic light and shadow play, ridges and valleys catching illumination to reveal depth and dimensionality, suggesting hand-worked processes or controlled transformation of materials through burning, tooling, or chemical treatment. This attention to surface activates the lamp as sculptural presence even when not illuminated, ensuring the object maintains visual interest across varied viewing conditions and lighting scenarios. The integration of functional elements, specifically the metal armature and the luminous crown, achieves seamless synthesis rather than mere assembly, these components appearing to grow from or respond to the textured body organically. Thematically, Firefly Lamp engages with enduring questions about the relationship between utility and beauty, the role of craft labor in an age of industrial production, and the capacity of domestic objects to carry meaning beyond their practical function, the work seems to propose that everyday objects in our living environments can serve as anchors for aesthetic attention and material contemplation. The title itself, Firefly Lamp, invites consideration of natural bioluminescence translated into domestic illumination, the gentle contained glow suggesting the ephemeral magic of fireflies captured and suspended, nature's light-making transformed into designed experience, perhaps the work asks viewers to consider how designed objects might preserve wonder, how the functional requirements of illumination might become opportunities for poetic expression, and how our daily environments might be enriched through objects that honor both material integrity and imaginative vision.

Unique Properties
This design can be used both as a wall and a desk lamp. In addition to these features, due to the rotation of the illuminated part in the lamp's base, it is also a great choice for sloped ceilings. The object has two light sources: one with low intensity, suitable for use as a nightlight or for creating a semi-dark environment, and another light source beneath the lamp, ideal for reading or illuminating a space.

Production Technology
In the construction of this lamp, to achieve the designer's intended feel of old lamps, an opaque glass globe and a wooden base were used. The base is made using the lathe turning technique. A 2 cm diameter rod connects the globe to the base, and the globe rotates 360 degrees around the axis of this rod.
Design Challenge
The main challenge in designing this lamp was the client's request to add a lamp with a new design but an old-world feel to their products. Since the client was a manufacturer of wooden lighting and furniture, the designer faced limitations in using various materials for the design of this lamp.
Project Duration
The project finished in October 2024 in Tehran, Iran.
Operation Flow
The initial idea for the firefly lamp was shaped through a design order for a lighting suitable for hotel spaces. A lamp that, while being functional with controllable light, creates semi-lit spaces ideal for hotel rooms, while also being distinct and unique in form. This object can also be used as a light for sleeping or reading. However, its primary function is to enhance the quality of life in the surrounding space.
Research
The firefly lamp is a research project aimed at discovering and recreating light-producing elements in architectural spaces, evoking a sense of place in Iranian and Middle Eastern architecture. The form development process moved towards creating a design that, without repeating the common decorations of traditional light-producing elements, would achieve a form with an old-world feel but with a new design. Ultimately, the choice of materials, along with the ability to rotate and control the light, are additional factors that have helped the designer create an Iranian-inspired form.
Inspiration
Firefly is the name of an insect that are light emitting, and also refers to something that shines in the darkness. It is a luminous object that illuminates its surrounding area, creating a unique identity around it.A firefly is reminiscent of old lamps that were used as luminous elements in indoor spaces before the invention of electricity and light bulbs. These lamps created a limited, low, and localized light in the space, with each one giving meaning to a corner of the environment.
