About A Moment Residential Interior
A Moment is a residential interior design for an apartment of 80 square meters in Taipei. An open floor plan increases the sense of depth and creates a circulated flow through the main area. Walls and openings were rearranged so that natural light reaches most zones, which lowers the need for artificial light during the day. Sliding doors allow each area to be separated when privacy is needed. A storage unit set under the main beam also works as a space divider. Textured wood panels and mineral paint shift in appearance as the light changes.
Studio One's A Moment Residential Interior participates within the refined lineage of contemporary minimalist residential design, a movement that emerged from the confluence of Scandinavian functionalism, mid-century modernism, and the spatial philosophies embedded within traditional Eastern aesthetics, particularly the Japanese concept of ma or meaningful emptiness and the principle of seijaku suggesting tranquil simplicity. The compositional achievement of this living space demonstrates sophisticated understanding of spatial proportion, material restraint, and chromatic discipline, wherein the expansive white architectural envelope functions not as mere absence of color but as an active presence establishing luminosity, spatial expansion, and perceptual calm. The substantial curved sofa form, upholstered in warm neutral tones ranging from dove gray to soft sage, achieves sculptural presence through its generous scale and flowing contour, suggesting both invitation to repose and confident formal statement within the volume. Particular accomplishment appears in the layering of horizontal elements, from the linear ceiling channels housing recessed lighting to the parallel slats of the venetian blinds to the low horizontal media console, creating visual rhythm that emphasizes lateral extension and reinforces the sense of spacious horizontality characteristic of contemporary urban dwelling design. The chromatic sophistication lies precisely in what is withheld rather than deployed, the designer exercising remarkable restraint by limiting accent colors to subtle earth tones and allowing natural wood grain to provide the primary thermal warmth against the cool neutral field. Technical facility manifests in the precision joinery evident in built cabinetry, the seamless integration of lighting infrastructure, and the careful calibration of furniture scale to room proportion, ensuring generous circulation while maintaining intimate conversation distance. Thematically, this interior explores the contemporary aspiration toward domestic sanctuary within urban density, the creation of restorative private realm characterized by visual quietude, material quality, and spatial generosity despite potentially constrained square footage. The work seems to contemplate the relationship between minimalism and comfort, demonstrating that restraint need not equal austerity when textile softness, organic material warmth, and considered lighting design temper architectural severity. The horizontal window treatment perhaps references traditional screens found in vernacular architecture across cultures, filtering exterior complexity while maintaining connection to natural light cycles. One might observe how the centered cubic ceiling fixture functions almost as sculptural punctuation, a small gesture of geometric boldness within the otherwise flowing and organic formal vocabulary. This interior invites consideration of how residential space can simultaneously withdraw from and engage with the world beyond its walls, offering both refuge and prospect, enclosure and openness, through the calibrated relationship between solid architectural boundaries and light-transmitting surfaces.

- Unique Properties
- Studio One adopts the open floor plan to maximize the depth of the space while creating a circulated flow in the main area. The space was indulged with abundant natural light, which not only allows to interact with interior materials and create interesting texture variation but also achieve energy saving during daytime. Studio One creates a non-hinderance flow towards space, yet each area could be isolated from each other with flexible sliding doors. The space possibilities lie on its flexibilities.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- The area of this project is 80sq. m2, which contains living area, dining area, kitchen, dressing room, guest room, master bedroom and bathroom. The space was composed with an open floor plan with blur boundaries.

- For design strategies, Studio One adopts the open floor plan to maximize the interior space in both depth. Designer studied the existing beam system and rearranging walls and opening of rooms in order to achieve non-hinderance flow and obtain natural light as much as possible. In order to decrease the oppression from the main beam in main area, designer placed the storage system underneath and used it as space divider as well. Space function was hidden in new walls/storage system yet space boundaries varied based on demands.
- Design Challenge
- The challenge was to maximizing the interior space with more possibilities and flexibilities. How the space or zones were defined without setting up a clear or solid boundaries is the key design objective towards this project. An open plan was introduced to the case in order to achieve the design goal while also allowing natural lights travel as much as it could within whole interior. As the space indulged in natural lights, how the materials altered or created more texture expressions for both visual or tactile perception was design concern as well.
- Project Duration
- The project was completed in Taipei, Taiwan in Dec. 2023.
- Operation Flow
- The original existing floor plan was more closed with one way space flow, hence also limits the amount of natural light comes into the space. By analyzing client’s space demands and living behavior, Studio One decrease the number of rooms, rearranging the size of each room/zone in order to maximize the usage of the interior.
Solid walls drew a clear boundary between areas yet applying sliding door to obtain the flexibilities towards the space. The method allows to obtain more circulated space flow and a brighter space, the solid/blur boundaries could be easily shifted by client’s changing demands. - Research
- a) Space form follows demands-
In this limited space, designer applied open plan to maximize the possibility and flexibilities for the interior, yet the contour of the space could be re-shaped easily based on client’s space demands. The boundaries between zones could be solid or blur.
b) Dialogue between lights and materials-
In order to create a calm and serenity space, designer applied monochrome color scheme and emphasize on the dialogue between natural light and interior materials. Textured Wood panel and mineral paint were selected based on its unique traits and textures, and both of them altered while natural light shifted from time to time. Every moment counts for the interior texture expression. - Inspiration
- The inspiration was derived from the concept of module system. Each area in the space were seen as an isolate cube/zone, but as the cubes re-arranged based on client’s life behavior or space demands, the space could be easily shifted into different contour. The boundaries within the interior were vague yet could be easily redefined by using the sliding door to create private zone in an open interior space.
