About Tree Building Design
The complex supports tech startups and provides a space for learning and growth. Inspired by nature, the designer has preserved an old tree as a symbol of growth and interaction, creating a workspace on two floors and a cafe. Below street level, it interacts with its surroundings. The lighting, the cafe ceiling is like a Sama dance, and the concrete facade are unique, while the challenges of the entrance stairs resemble musical notes. Each part of the design has a specific idea that the designer uses to enhance the cultural and aesthetic appeal, using handmade materials and other elements.
Mahdi Ghiasy's Tree Building Design engages contemporary architecture's ongoing exploration of envelope systems that transcend mere enclosure to become active mediators between interior and exterior environments, positioning itself within a broader discourse surrounding biomimetic design principles where natural patterns inform built form, the repeated vertical fins establishing a rhythmic facade language that recalls both natural phenomena such as tree bark striations or bamboo forest density and technological precedents in parametric architecture where computational tools enable complex geometries previously unattainable through conventional construction methods, the compositional achievement demonstrates remarkable sophistication in balancing uniformity with variation, each fin maintaining individual geometric identity while contributing to an overall harmonic sequence, the white material choice achieving multiple functions simultaneously providing high solar reflectance for thermal performance, creating a luminous presence in the urban fabric, and serving as a neutral canvas for the subtle interplay of natural light and shadow throughout daily and seasonal cycles, the dark base anchoring the composition speaks to tectonic honesty establishing a clear visual distinction between ground-supporting structure and the lighter elevated envelope, suggesting a hierarchy of material and structural systems that aids legibility and provides human-scale articulation at street level, the horizontal glazed bands visible between the vertical fins reveal the building's internal organization while the fins themselves offer solar shading reducing heat gain and glare, this integration of environmental performance with formal expression exemplifies contemporary architecture's aspiration toward designs that are simultaneously aesthetically compelling and ecologically responsive, the terracotta accent adding measured warmth to an otherwise cool palette demonstrates chromatic discipline, a single note of color operating as both wayfinding element and compositional punctuation, the facade's engagement with natural light appears central to its conception, the curved profiles of the fins designed to capture and reflect daylight differently throughout the day creating an ever-changing visual experience that connects building occupants and passersby to diurnal rhythms, thematically the design explores the relationship between order and organic growth, between human-made precision and natural variability, suggesting architectural expression that honors both rational planning and the beautiful irregularities found in living systems, the vertical emphasis creates a sense of aspiration and growth while the rhythmic repetition with subtle variation evokes the seriality found in natural phenomena like leaves on a branch or ripples in water, this work invites viewers to consider how architecture might embody multiple readings simultaneously functioning as pragmatic shelter, environmental mediator, urban sculpture, and poetic expression of natural principles translated through contemporary design intelligence and fabrication capabilities.

- Unique Properties
- This building is designed on three floors by a student: the unique form and plan have caused that by first placing the cafe below the building level and interacting with the street, using a sunlight controller made of "GFRC" concrete, the roof is implemented in waffle form, the use of unique and handmade materials, the special entrance stairs that are very attractive, the roof of the cafe is a symbol of inspiration and growth. A central void in the plan, the whole complex symbolizes growth.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- Land area: 1,200 m2.
Building's total constructed area: 4,200 m2.
Building height: 16 m.
Number of floors: 2 above ground, 1 below ground total: 3 floors.
Structure: Concrete
Roof: Waffle - Tags

- Production Technology
- The design should interact with the surrounding environment so that the structure does not initially cause problems for the user and gives a broad view of the plan. In addition to the variety of different entrances and accesses, it is like passing through stages, so as much as possible, the tree located in the center of the site is preserved, and a building with a creative form and response is designed to attract the audience as a unique work according to the needs of the client.
- Design Challenge
- The design represents dynamism and social interaction, inspired by the growth of a seed in a tree, symbolizing upward movement and spirituality and reflecting the Sufi dance. Sunlight shines through the void into the tree and manages the intense sunlight through a concrete filter on the facade. The entrance steps inspire growth. The recessed and protruding forms create an attractive and harmonious architectural environment. They invite the audience to spend time in or look at the complex.
- Project Duration
- The design of this project began in January 2025 and finished in March 2025, in Istanbul, Turkiye.
- Operation Flow
- Buildings should be like living organisms interacting with their surroundings, especially those with public uses, in a way that invites their audience to spend some time there. This project decided to build a building that interacts with the environment, considering the client's wishes and location in a busy area. Also, the presence of a tree on the project site inspired this research, which can be preserved to design a landmark building.
- Research
- When designing a building with two main uses, one for general use as a coffee shop and bookstore and the other for specialized use as a digital shopping complex in a busy location, the designer considers a scenario for each part. Given the project's constraints, he uses this challenge as an opportunity and draws inspiration from the growth of that tree to, like the branches of a tree, plan the layout in terms of the type of access to each use and the use of each material and element.
- Inspiration
- The complex supports young people by eliminating office startup costs and the needs of startups. Inspired by a bud to an old tree that symbolizes growth, the building is divided into two parts: an office and a cafe below street level. Design features: a central void, a cafe roof shaped like a dance of Sama, a concrete facade that controls sunlight, and stairs inspired by musical notes that symbolize progress. Traditional Iranian tiles and handmade bricks increase attractiveness and interaction.
