About Peacemeal App
Peacemeal is a wellness app designed for individuals who face challenges with weight gain or seek a more balanced relationship with food. It includes two core features: Mindful Eating, which guides users to savor meals, observe emotions, and reflect on their experiences; and Purposeful Eating, which offers texture and temperature based recipe suggestions alongside gamified nutrition goals. The app features a calm, supportive interface that encourages emotional awareness, nutritional engagement, and more thoughtful eating habits.
Liying Peng's Peacemeal App emerges from contemporary digital wellness culture where mobile applications increasingly serve as companions in personal health journeys, translating the ancient human relationship with food and nourishment into screen-based experiences that balance utility with emotional resonance. This interface design demonstrates sophisticated understanding of behavioral design principles, recognizing that sustainable habit formation requires emotional engagement beyond mere data tracking, and employing visual language that transforms nutritional monitoring from clinical obligation into intimate personal ritual. The compositional achievement lies in the strategic integration of hand-drawn illustrative elements within the structured geometry of digital interface conventions, creating productive tension between organic warmth and systematic architecture that mirrors the psychological negotiation users experience between spontaneous eating pleasure and intentional nutritional awareness. The color palette demonstrates notable chromatic intelligence, anchoring the interface in earth tones and soft pastels that suggest natural foods and gentle encouragement while deploying strategic accents of vibrant vermillion and deep teal to establish clear information hierarchy and guide user attention toward primary actions and achievements. The typography mixing sans-serif utility faces with quirky display letterforms reflects contemporary digital design trends while serving functional ends, ensuring readability in body text while allowing celebratory moments like "You are on a roll!" to carry personality and warmth that reinforces positive user emotions around achievement. The illustrative vocabulary particularly rewards examination, translating whole foods into simplified iconic forms that maintain recognizable character while abstracting toward playful symbols, the hand-drawn quality with visible texture and stroke variation humanizing the digital experience and suggesting that wellness journeys accommodate imperfection and organic progress rather than demanding clinical precision. The achievement visualization centered on the large numeral five demonstrates effective gamification design, transforming abstract data into memorable visual metaphor through the stacked cylindrical rolls supporting the seated figure, suggesting both accomplishment accumulation and the playful linguistic connection between being "on a roll" and the visual representation of rolled objects, creating layered meaning that engages users cognitively and emotionally beyond simple number display. The progress indicators employing food icons with fractional tracking demonstrate thoughtful information design, making quantitative goals tangible and approachable through familiar visual references while maintaining motivational transparency about distance to target, the design seemingly understanding that visibility of both progress and remaining effort sustains engagement more effectively than either celebration or challenge alone. The spatial presentation of two screens in diagonal arrangement serves pedagogical function, simultaneously demonstrating the journey initiation point and the achievement celebration endpoint, suggesting the application's capacity to accompany users across time and mark meaningful milestones, the physical separation and slight elevation difference implying progression and growth. This work participates in broader design conversations around how digital tools might support human flourishing through interfaces that prioritize psychological sustainability, emotional safety, and incremental progress celebration over anxiety-inducing metrics or shame-based motivation, representing a maturing understanding within the design community that effective behavior change technology requires not just functional excellence but emotional intelligence. The viewer might consider how these interface choices reflect evolving cultural values around wellness, self-care, and the role of technology in daily life, and contemplate what visual and interactive languages best support our most intimate personal goals without becoming instruments of surveillance or self-judgment.

- Production Technology
- Peacemeal was developed using Figma for interface design and prototyping, enabling rapid iteration and user testing. The design system emphasizes accessibility, intuitive navigation, and emotional tone through soft visuals and calm color palettes. The prototype was built with user flow logic to simulate real interactions, allowing for feedback driven refinement of core features like meal logging, recipe recommendations, and gamified progress tracking.
- Design Challenge
- The main challenge was designing for an underserved group, underweight individuals, whose needs are rarely addressed in mainstream wellness tools. Unlike weight loss journeys, healthy weight gain often lacks clear structure, cultural support, or positive narratives. The creative challenge was to reframe eating as a joyful, healing act rather than a task or struggle. This required translating emotional insights into features that feel intuitive, safe, and encouraging, balancing nutritional tracking with mindful engagement while avoiding any clinical tone.
- Project Duration
- The project started in September 2021 in Chicago, and finished in March 2022.
- Operation Flow
- Users begin by setting their personal wellness goals, such as healthy weight gain or improved eating habits. Daily prompts guide them to log meals, emotions, and physical cues. Peacemeal recommends recipes based on mood, texture preference, and nutritional needs. As users interact with the app, they unlock small achievements through gamified progress tracking, reinforcing consistency and self-awareness. The flow is intuitive, calm, and emotionally supportive, which is designed to turn eating into a mindful, uplifting ritual.
- Research
- Peacemeal was shaped by interviews and surveys with individuals struggling to gain weight. Research revealed emotional pain points, like shame, isolation, and lack of guidance, often ignored in mainstream wellness tools. Competitive analysis showed a weight loss dominated market. These insights led to a user centered design focused on empathy, mindfulness, and positive reinforcement, filling a critical gap in wellness support.
- Inspiration
- Peacemeal was inspired by the overlooked experience of individuals who struggle to gain weight, a challenge often dismissed in a world focused on weight loss. Research and observation revealed a gap in wellness tools that genuinely support underweight users. Peacemeal was created as a compassionate and joyful space that reframes eating as an act of self-care and healing, helping users rebuild healthy habits and a positive relationship with both food and body.
