About Solid Table Light

Inspired by the natural shape of a boulder, this lamp is designed to fit seamlessly into your home, whether your style is classic or modern. You’ll notice how the conical support and shade interlock perfectly, giving you a stable and visually clean look. The support widens at the base for added stability. With a round GX53 Led lamp, you get efficient, even light without sacrificing style. Made from recycled R-Polycarbonate, the lamp is both durable and sustainable. Its timeless design ensures you can enjoy it for years, making it a lasting, eco-friendly addition to your space.

Jan Goderis's Solid Table Light emerges from contemporary lighting design traditions that honor the legacy of mid-twentieth-century Scandinavian and Bauhaus-descended industrial modernism, positioning itself within a lineage that celebrates structural clarity, material honesty, and the elevation of functional objects to aesthetic autonomy through disciplined formal reduction and bold chromatic commitment. The work demonstrates sophisticated understanding of cantilever engineering as visual drama, the extended horizontal arm projecting from a tapered vertical column creates dynamic asymmetry while maintaining structural equilibrium through careful mass distribution, the volumetric light head balanced by the substantial trapezoidal base, a compositional strategy that transforms mechanical necessity into sculptural expression, echoing modernist principles articulated by designers who recognized that truthful expression of structural logic generates inherent beauty. The monochromatic vermillion treatment represents a notable chromatic achievement, saturated powdercoat finish applied with industrial precision creates a seamless color field that unifies disparate geometric elements into coherent sculptural totality while allowing subtle tonal modulation to articulate form through light and shadow behavior, the glossy surface capturing and reflecting environmental illumination in ways that describe curved and planar passages with naturalistic fidelity, demonstrating technical facility in both manufacturing execution and photographic documentation. The geometric vocabulary draws upon archetypal industrial design elements, the circular lamp head suggesting both functional aperture and volumetric terminus, the linear cantilevered arm reading as pure extension and directional gesture, the trapezoidal base providing visual and gravitational anchor while introducing subtle complexity through its faceted form that catches light differently across angled planes, the overall composition achieving balance between geometric simplicity and dimensional richness that rewards sustained observation. Particularly accomplished passages include the transition zone where vertical column meets horizontal arm, a junction that manages structural connection with elegant formal resolution, and the relationship between the glowing amber light source and its saturated red housing, creating warm-cool temperature dialogue that activates the composition beyond mere formal exercise into atmospheric experience. The work invites consideration of how everyday functional objects participate in broader aesthetic conversations, how lighting fixtures serve not merely utilitarian purposes but contribute to spatial atmosphere and emotional environment through material presence, color expression, and formal intelligence, suggesting that thoughtful design transforms quotidian necessity into opportunity for beauty, contemplation, and sensory enrichment within domestic settings. One might observe how the luminaire's bold chromatic commitment and sculptural confidence propose that functional objects need not recede into background utility but can assert aesthetic presence while maintaining purposeful restraint, celebrating the designer's role as mediator between engineering requirement and experiential desire, between industrial production and handcrafted sensibility, between modernist discipline and contemporary color boldness.

Production Technology
The lamp is made from recycled polycarbonate (R-Polycarbonate) using injection molding. This process enables precise, complex shapes and ensures strength, thermal, and dimensional stability. The use of R-Polycarbonate makes the design sustainable and recyclable, aligning with modern demands for eco-friendly materials.
Design Challenge
The creative challenge was to transform an original sculptural design conceived as both a ceramic lighting object and a sculpture into a more efficient production process and material, without losing its sculptural identity. An additional challenge was finding a light source that fit the design language and ensured stability. The solution was to sculpt the form so that function determines shape.
Project Duration
Design work began in mid 2024 in Ghent, Belgium. Despite the short time between the first sketches and the final design in early 2025, there was no time pressure. This allowed the design to evolve naturally during this period, resulting in a strong and desired outcome.
Operation Flow
This lamp is easily assembled by sliding the conical base and shade together, ensuring a secure fit. The stable, widening base provides balance, while the recycled polycarbonate keeps it lightweight yet robust. The GX53 LED lamp delivers warm, dimmable light, operated by a cord dimmer. Its sculptural form adds value to any interior, even when not in use.
Research
At the start, we aimed to create the lamp in ceramic, a regional and circular material. However, prototypes showed inconsistent dimensions, making precise assembly difficult. Mounting also required non-eco-friendly glue. We shifted to injection-molded, recycled polycarbonate, material that is durable, circular, strong, and glossy. This allowed for hidden screw assembly, enabling easy, sustainable disassembly and full recyclability at the end of its life.
Inspiration
The inspiration for this design comes from the natural form of a boulder, which guided the creation of a functional and aesthetically pleasing lamp. The organic shape inspired the seamless connection between the support and shade, resulting in a balanced, stable, and timeless design that harmonizes with various interiors and emphasizes sustainability.
