About Butterflies Lingering Over Flowers Ring
Butterflies Lingering Over Flowers is a ring inspired by a line of classical Chinese poetry describing a butterfly gliding through layers of flowers. The center stone is an unheated raw pigeon blood ruby from Myanmar, whose natural inclusions and rare hue are preserved. Openwork craftsmanship suggests layered petals, while micro set diamonds add brilliance along the band. The asymmetric band imitates the arcs of butterfly wings and fits comfortably on either hand. The 18K gold body supports the complex openwork and resists corrosion.
Jie Dong's Butterflies Lingering Over Flowers Ring participates in the enduring jewelry tradition of translating natural forms into precious materials, a lineage extending from ancient botanical goldwork through Art Nouveau's organic sinuosity to contemporary high jewelry's technical virtuosity in gemstone setting and sculptural metalwork. This substantial cocktail ring demonstrates remarkable compositional intelligence in its radial organization, where a commanding central cushion-cut ruby establishes both chromatic and hierarchical dominance, surrounded by satellite rubies and diamond-set petals that create rhythmic visual movement around the ring's circumference, the entire structure rising in dimensional tiers from the band to achieve sculptural presence that transforms the piece from mere adornment into wearable miniature sculpture. The technical execution reveals sophisticated mastery of multiple jewelry-making disciplines, from the precision lapidary cutting that gives each ruby its brilliant faceted surface and optimal light performance, to the meticulous metalwork that constructs flowing petal forms in white gold or platinum, to the extraordinarily refined micro-pavé diamond setting that creates continuous sparkling surfaces without visible interruption, each tiny brilliant-cut stone secured yet appearing to float in seamless fields of scintillation. The chromatic strategy demonstrates assured understanding of color theory in three-dimensional form, deploying the complementary relationship between warm saturated rubies in the crimson-to-magenta range and cool neutral white metal with colorless diamonds, a pairing that maximizes visual contrast and ensures both warm and cool elements achieve maximum optical impact through mutual reinforcement. The compositional title, Butterflies Lingering Over Flowers, suggests layers of symbolic meaning within the design vocabulary, where the obvious floral interpretation of petal-like lobes radiating from ruby centers coexists with suggestions of butterfly forms in the marquise diamond accents and perhaps the overall asymmetrical clustering that evokes natural pollinator visitation rather than rigid geometric arrangement, inviting contemplation of transformation, ephemeral beauty, the relationship between observer and observed in natural systems, and the garden as site of both cultivation and wildness. The scale and density of gemstone deployment positions this work within the haute joaillerie tradition of celebratory jewelry designed for significant occasions, special presentations, or collection-worthy investment, pieces that announce presence and demonstrate material luxury while simultaneously serving as technical showcases for atelier capabilities in stone selection, setting innovation, and sculptural metalwork. One might observe affinities with the nature-inspired high jewelry of established houses that draw upon garden imagery, where rubies frequently symbolize passion, vitality, and the life force, while diamonds contribute their associations with permanence, clarity, and light, the combination suggesting enduring passion or treasured moments crystallized into lasting form. The viewer might contemplate how this ring negotiates the relationship between natural inspiration and artificial perfection, translating the organic irregularity of blossoms and butterflies into the geometric precision of faceted gemstones and engineered metal structures, a transformation that honors natural beauty while asserting human craft's ability to distill, concentrate, and preserve ephemeral natural phenomena in materials that resist time's erosion, inviting reflection on what we choose to memorialize, celebrate, and carry with us as tangible reminders of beauty encountered.

- Unique Properties
- Using the core technique of frozen motion, the ring transforms the poetic scene from a line in Reflections on Qujiang Lake II by the renowned Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu, through layers of flowers, the butterfly glides, into a wearable work of art. By deconstructing the moment when the butterflies gently brush flower petals, the designer abstracts a threefold metaphor for love, pursuit, intimacy, and immersion, forming a narrative that blends Eastern aesthetics with modern jewelry design.

- Production Technology
- The center stone is an unheated raw pigeon blood ruby from Myanmar, whose natural inclusions and rare hue are preserved, celebrating the unfiltered beauty that mirrors the purity of true love. Through openwork craftsmanship and the mix of micro set diamonds of D E color grade and IF clarity, it enhances brilliance and clarity, creating a visual effect of diamonds shimmering like morning dew. Crafted from 18K gold, it supports complex openwork and resists corrosion, ensuring lasting brilliance.
- Design Challenge
- The challenge is to freeze the poetic moment of butterflies gently brushing the flower into the static form. The ring setting constructs a layered spatial imagery where butterflies circle the flower and petals mirror its fluttering form with openwork craftsmanship and micro set diamonds. Diamonds shimmer like morning dew along the band, their cool brilliance forming a contrast to the pigeon blood ruby. With the flow of light, it brings to life the vitality of butterflies gliding through flowers.
- Project Duration
- Designed and developed in Beijing in November 2024, the project was launched in China in January 2025.
- Operation Flow
- Transcending the static nature of traditional jewelry, the ring invites emotional interaction with its dynamic form and wearing method. The asymmetric ring band imitates the natural arcs of butterfly wings and flower petals. Its gradient curve ensures a comfortable fit on both hands, achieving a balance between artistic tension and ergonomic ease. The openwork edges are smoothly finished and crafted to prevent snagging, showing the modern jewelry design philosophy of form following function.
- Research
- In the fast paced modern world, consumer demand for jewelry has shifted from pure ornamentation to emotional resonance and cultural identity. This design responds to two major trends. Drawing inspiration from Tang poetry, it fills the gap in the highend jewelry market for jewelry with a cultural narrative. It also embraces natural materials and recyclable craftsmanship to meet the growing desire for sustainable consumption of the new generation.
- Inspiration
- It draws on a vivid scene written by Du Fu, through layers of flowers, the butterfly glides. The designer uses jewelry to transform the artistic void into a 3D spatial language. By capturing the interaction between the butterfly and the flower, it shows the metaphor of love, pursuit, intimacy, and immersion. The curvy ring band imitates the fluttering butterflies and the openwork craftsmanship evokes the layered petals. The unheated raw Burmese pigeon blood ruby mirrors the purity of true love.
