About Bonsai Glass Mug

Bonsai is a glass mug designed for warm beverages. The body follows flame-inspired contours, and the handle is shaped to match the natural curve of the hand for a comfortable and secure grip. The transparent glass shows the color of the drink and reflects light across the sculpted surface. The mug is made from soda-lime glass, a durable material that resists temperature change and can be recycled repeatedly. Production uses a hinged stainless steel mold and a glass melt forming process. Each mug holds 250 ml, with a diameter of 75 mm and a height of 87 mm.

Anita Ghasser's Bonsai Glass Mug emerges within contemporary design discourse that celebrates the elevation of everyday functional objects through artistic intervention and sculptural consideration, participating in a broader cultural revaluation of tableware as worthy of aesthetic contemplation beyond mere utility. The design demonstrates notable formal accomplishment through its integration of organic relief patterning into the cylindrical glass body, where flowing curved forms create dimensional surface activation that transforms light transmission and tactile experience, the undulating motifs suggesting botanical growth patterns or natural fluid dynamics rendered in transparent or translucent glass that captures, refracts, and diffuses illumination in endlessly varying ways depending on viewing angle, ambient light conditions, and beverage contents. The compositional presentation here employs triadic vertical arrangement showcasing three colorway variations, the transparent clear version revealing the sculptural articulation with unmediated precision, the amber-bronze specimen generating warm atmospheric depth through chromatic glass, and the coral-liquid-filled example demonstrating how the relief pattern creates complex visual interplay between container and contents, each iteration offering distinct aesthetic experience while maintaining design continuity. The gracefully curved handle extends from the vessel body with ergonomic consideration while contributing to the overall sculptural silhouette, the form vocabulary balancing geometric cylindrical structure with organic surface animation. The inclusion of concrete plinth and brass botanical ornament within the photographic composition situates the glassware within broader material culture conversation, suggesting dialogue between industrial aggregate materials, precious metals, natural botanical forms, and refined glass craft, perhaps evoking studio pottery traditions, Scandinavian design philosophy emphasizing natural materials and honest functional beauty, Japanese aesthetic principles of wabi-sabi finding profound beauty in everyday objects, or Arts and Crafts movement ideals celebrating artisanal production. The relief pattern's flowing organic character may reference natural phenomena, water movement, botanical growth patterns, or abstract biomorphic forms, inviting contemplation of how design can bring natural world resonance into domestic ritual spaces. The chromatic restraint across warm earth tones and neutrals creates cohesive visual temperature suggesting warmth, comfort, accessibility, and organic authenticity. The work seemingly invites consideration of how thoughtfully designed functional objects can transform mundane daily activities such as morning tea or afternoon coffee into moments of aesthetic appreciation and mindful presence, how beauty in everyday surroundings contributes to quality of life, and how contemporary craft can honor traditional glassmaking techniques while achieving fresh formal expression. One might observe how the transparent and translucent qualities of glass create ever-changing visual experience as light conditions shift throughout the day, how the dimensional relief invites tactile as well as visual engagement, and how such objects can serve as small daily reminders that utility and beauty need not exist in opposition but can merge into unified aesthetic experience that enriches domestic life.

Production Technology
The mug made from soda-lime glass. The material is known for its strength, durability and temperature resistance. it made with hinge stainless steel mold and glass melt forming process. The glass can be molded and crafted in a variety of very different shapes and thicknesses. It is an infinitely recyclable material that can be re-melted again and again minimizing waste and environmental impact.
Design Challenge
The main challenge was connecting the flame to the handle of glass while considering manufacturability due to manufacturing constraints.
Project Duration
The project started in December 2024 for Sakura Brand at Noritazeh Glass Company in Tehran, Iran, and finished in April 2025.
Operation Flow
This glass mug with a flame‑inspired body and ergonomic handle is simple to use: pour your drink, grip the handle, and sip. Its sculpted curves catch and bend light, so as liquid level changes the appearance subtly shifts a small, elegant transformation. The integrated flame form improves grip and balance while amplifying visual appeal, making each drink feel steadier and more special.
Research
It was a conceptual design that started with a sketch and was brought to life and production with the help of common modeling software. Considering the primary goal of any business, which is to generate revenue and sales, the goal of this product was to showcase elegance with a conceptual design for the artistic tastes and market of the customers.
Inspiration
This mug design takes inspiration from the eternal dance of fire. Flames have always fascinated humanity-not only as a source of warmth and light, but also as a symbol of passion, transformation and energy. The presence of this essence in a practical, every day product turns this mug into a piece of art that carries deeper meaning.
