Interviews
Grand Interview
The Sarv Counter Chair's fluid wooden form, which rises with the vertical grace of the Persian cypress tree, has earned recognition through the Bronze A' Design Award in the A' Furniture Design Award category, one of the most internationally regarded juried design competitions. What specific moments in your research into Persian cultural symbolism and the cypress tree's formal language translated most powerfully into the structural and visual decisions that define the Sarv Counter Chair?
The defining moments in the development of the Sarv Counter Chair emerged during my research into the symbolic and visual language of the Persian cypress tree, known in Iran as Sarv. In Persian culture, the cypress is far more than a botanical form; it is a profound symbol of resilience, freedom, dignity, immortality, and spiritual elevation. For centuries, it has appeared in Persian gardens, miniature paintings, carpets, poetry, and architectural ornamentation as an emblem of uprightness and enduring beauty. What fascinated me most was the paradox within its character: although the cypress grows vertically and stands with remarkable strength, it also possesses a subtle softness and fluidity in its silhouette.A particularly influential moment came when I began observing the gradual tapering of the cypress trunk and the gentle rhythm through which its branches ascend toward the sky. I realized that its elegance does not originate from decoration but from proportion, continuity, and the silent tension between stability and movement. This understanding became the conceptual foundation of the Sarv Counter Chair.Structurally, I translated this idea into elongated wooden elements that rise seamlessly from the base toward the backrest, creating an uninterrupted upward movement reminiscent of the cypress's natural growth. The chair avoids excessive ornamentation and instead relies on the purity of its lines and carefully controlled curves to express the symbolic essence of the tree. The vertical extension of the backrest was intentionally designed to evoke a sense of aspiration and elevation, while the softened transitions and flowing geometry introduce a human and emotional dimension that prevents the object from becoming rigid. The most powerful lesson I learned from studying the Persian cypress was that cultural symbols can be transformed into contemporary objects without literal representation. Rather than reproducing the image of a tree, I sought to reinterpret its spirit. The Sarv Counter Chair therefore became an exploration of how memory, identity, and cultural symbolism can be embodied through proportion, movement, and materiality, allowing an ancient Persian symbol to find a new expression within contemporary furniture design.
The global conversation around cultural identity in contemporary furniture design is growing increasingly significant, and the Sarv Counter Chair stands as a compelling contribution to that dialogue by rooting a modern seating object in centuries of Iranian symbolic tradition. How do you believe the Sarv Counter Chair can shift the way international audiences perceive and engage with Iranian design heritage, and what responsibility do you feel as a designer to carry that cultural narrative forward through furniture forms?
I believe the Sarv Counter Chair has the potential to reshape international perceptions of Iranian design heritage by presenting it as a living, evolving, and contemporary source of inspiration rather than a historical or decorative reference confined to the past. Global audiences often encounter Iranian culture through its celebrated carpets, architecture, calligraphy, or ancient monuments. While these are invaluable aspects of our identity, I feel there is an equally important opportunity to demonstrate that Iranian cultural symbols can actively inform contemporary design languages and produce objects that are relevant to modern life. The Sarv Counter Chair is rooted in the symbolism of the Persian cypress tree, a form that has represented resilience, freedom, dignity, immortality, and spiritual elevation for centuries within Iranian culture. However, my intention was never to create a literal or nostalgic interpretation of this symbol. Instead, I sought to translate the cypress's essence—its vertical grace, balance, and silent strength—into a contemporary furniture object that can communicate across cultures without requiring prior knowledge of Iranian history. I believe design becomes most powerful when it can create emotional connections first and reveal cultural narratives gradually through curiosity and discovery. As a designer, I feel a profound responsibility to act as a cultural interpreter. Furniture is not merely a functional object; it is also a medium capable of carrying stories, values, and collective memories into everyday life. In an era of increasing globalization, there is a risk that design languages become visually homogeneous and disconnected from local identities. My responsibility is therefore not to preserve tradition as a static artifact, but to reinterpret and transform cultural narratives into forms that remain relevant, innovative, and accessible to contemporary audiences.Through the Sarv Counter Chair, I hope to encourage international audiences to perceive Iranian design heritage as dynamic, sophisticated, and deeply human. If a piece of furniture can inspire someone to ask about the meaning of the cypress tree, discover Persian symbolism, or develop a new appreciation for Iranian culture, then the design has succeeded in becoming more than an object—it has become a bridge between cultures, connecting heritage and contemporary life through form, material, and experience.
The production of the Sarv Counter Chair involved a thoughtful combination of CNC milling for geometric precision and hand-finishing for an artisanal human touch, a pairing that speaks directly to a broader challenge within the furniture industry around reconciling industrial efficiency with craft quality. In what ways did this hybrid production approach, developed specifically for the Sarv Counter Chair at Rendi Factory in Mashhad, reshape your understanding of what becomes possible when digital fabrication and traditional woodworking craftsmanship are brought together in service of a deeply organic form?
The development of the Sarv Counter Chair at Rendi Factory in Mashhad fundamentally changed my understanding of the relationship between technology and craftsmanship. The chair's form is inspired by the Persian cypress tree, a symbol characterized by fluid growth, subtle asymmetry, and organic continuity. Translating these qualities into a physical object revealed that neither digital fabrication nor handcraft alone could fully realize the design's intentions. Instead, the project demonstrated that the most meaningful results emerge when precision and human sensitivity work together.CNC milling played a crucial role in achieving the geometric accuracy required by the chair's continuous curves and complex transitions. The technology enabled us to maintain consistency, structural reliability, and dimensional precision while producing elements that would have been extremely difficult to execute manually. It allowed the design to retain its purity of proportion and ensured that the vertical flow and seamless connections between components remained faithful to the original concept. However, I quickly realized that precision alone cannot communicate emotion. The essence of the Sarv Counter Chair lies in its ability to evoke the living presence of the cypress tree, and this quality required the intervention of skilled craftspeople. Hand-finishing became an essential stage in the process, where surfaces were softened, edges were refined, and subtle tactile nuances were introduced. The human hand brought warmth and sensitivity to the object, transforming digitally produced components into a piece that feels alive and emotionally resonant. This hybrid production approach reshaped my perspective by revealing that digital fabrication and traditional woodworking are not opposing forces but complementary languages. Technology can provide discipline, repeatability, and precision, while craftsmanship contributes intuition, material understanding, and emotional depth. Together, they make it possible to create forms that are both highly sophisticated and deeply human. The Sarv Counter Chair ultimately became more than a furniture piece; it became an exploration of a contemporary production philosophy. It demonstrated that organic and culturally meaningful forms do not require choosing between industrial efficiency and artisanal quality. On the contrary, when these two approaches are thoughtfully integrated, they expand the possibilities of furniture design, enabling the creation of objects that are technically advanced, emotionally engaging, and rooted in cultural storytelling.
