About Vessel of Time Residential
Vessel of Time is a residential interior design created for a pianist and a family of three. The home covers about 231 square meters in Taiwan. A wood-lined foyer forms a gentle threshold between the city and the interior. Tall fluted glass doors and sheer curtains filter daylight into the living space. The piano stands within a shared central core, where music, reading and conversation meet. Light timber, mineral textures and special paint with brush marks shape a calm, low-saturation setting. The open plan links the living areas and supports a slower pace of daily life.
WPH_HTH_Architects's Vessel of Time Residential engages the contemporary lineage of minimalist residential interiors where material restraint becomes expressive instrument rather than absence, positioning this achieved living environment within design traditions that honor craft, materiality, and the poetics of everyday dwelling—the spatial composition demonstrates considerable technical sophistication in its integration of diverse functional programs within a visually unified architectural language, the seamless millwork systems and consistent material palette creating perceptual continuity across zones typically fragmented in conventional residential planning, while the careful calibration of proportion, detail resolution, and tonal relationships reveals disciplined design thinking and meticulous execution—the primary compositional achievement resides in the delicate balance between openness and definition, the interior maintaining generous spatial flow while establishing distinct territorial zones through subtle shifts in material application, ceiling height modulation, and furnishing arrangement, the lowered soffit plane particularly effective in articulating threshold between circulation spine and inhabited room volumes without recourse to walls or conventional spatial barriers—chromatic accomplishment appears in the nuanced exploration of near-neutral tones where warm blonde timber introduces organic vitality and tactile warmth, tempering the cooler gray surfaces that might otherwise render the space austere, the restricted palette generating visual calm while sufficient contrast between surface treatments maintains spatial legibility and prevents monotonous uniformity—the integration of natural and artificial illumination demonstrates sensitivity to atmospheric quality and temporal variation, recessed fixtures providing consistent ambient foundation while sheer window treatments modulate incoming daylight, the luminous environment suggesting designers' attention to both functional requirements and phenomenological experience of inhabited space throughout daily cycles—technically, the floor-to-ceiling timber panels exhibit precise joinery and grain-matching that speaks to fabrication quality and installation care, the continuous runs creating vertical rhythm and subtle directional emphasis that draws attention upward while the horizontal flooring grain guides movement longitudinally through the space, these orthogonal material orientations establishing clear spatial coordinates—the work appears to explore themes fundamental to contemporary residential architecture: the quest for spatial generosity within urban constraints, the desire for visual simplicity amid material complexity, the integration of private retreat and social hospitality, and the expression of personal values through environmental curation—one might observe how the composition negotiates between architectural minimalism's tendency toward ascetic reduction and residential program's requirement for comfort, accommodating, and personality, the grand piano and carefully placed objects suggesting occupant identity and cultural engagement without compromising the overall compositional discipline—the environmental character invites consideration of how material choices and spatial organization shape daily experience, how refined detailing and tonal restraint might cultivate particular modes of attention or patterns of inhabitation, and whether spaces designed for visual serenity can support the complex, sometimes chaotic realities of domestic life, the interior proposing that aesthetic clarity and lived complexity need not exclude one another but might instead exist in productive tension, each enriching the other through thoughtful design mediation.

- The design incorporates special paint with brush marks to complement the layers of wood tones, balancing the intensity of the space with structure and color. In this low-saturation ambiance, the colors of life become richer and more vivid, allowing for the delicate appreciation of every moving moment. As time changes, the warmth of light and shadow deepens, and the space immerses in the gradual transitions under soft light, portraying a life theater where reality and romance blend.
- Design Challenge
- Real company is not doing the same thing in the same space, but rather, for this family of three, it means setting up the context through which each can fulfill their own private and shared needs in different corners. Re-spacing is the game-changing idea, as it is all about having fun, creating a new lifestyle for the family to build familial relationships anew.
- Project Duration
- The project started in July 2020 and finished in February 2021 in Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- Designed for a pianist and a family of three, this home is defined by light-toned timber and a quiet architectural language. A wood-lined foyer forms a gentle threshold from city to interior, leading to tall fluted glass doors that softly filter daylight into the living space.
The music and living areas share a central core where piano, conversation, and daily rituals converge. Expansive windows and sheer curtains shape the atmosphere through shifting light, while subtle ceiling shifts and axial walls guide the transition from public to private. Rooted in a Wabi-Sabi sensibility, the design embraces simplicity, light, and the passage of time. - Research
- Upon returning home, one enters a wood-wrapped foyer where the city’s noise gently fades. At the center of the living room, the piano is integrated rather than isolated, its music blending with reading, conversation, and shared meals. Light moves softly across timber surfaces from morning to evening, filtered through sheer curtains that create a calm, breathable atmosphere.
Circulation becomes part of daily life instead of a corridor, allowing pauses between music and books. An once-empty bookshelf gradually fills, marking the family’s growth. With light timber and mineral textures as a quiet backdrop, the home lets life, light, and sound take the lead—becoming a vessel shaped by time and memory. - Inspiration
- The aim is for home to be a source of tranquility, providing a refuge from the relentless pace of urban life. The design advocates for an open-plan layout where living areas are interconnected, promoting harmony between spaces and encouraging a sense of freedom and flow within the family. This makes it an ideal place for a modern lifestyle.
