About Whispers Under Wings Necklace Pendant

Whispers Under Wings is a necklace pendant shaped as a beetle. The hollow wings form a delicate openwork shell that holds a small suspended sprite inside. As the wearer moves, the inner sprite shifts and produces a soft, bell-like sound. The pendant was developed through digital modeling and made in silver by lost-wax casting, followed by hand finishing, polishing and careful assembly. The piece measures 20 by 40 by 15 millimeters. The beetle is used as a symbol of protection, transformation and resilience, while the moving sprite suggests fragility and imagination.

Whispers Under Wings Necklace Pendant by Sirui Sophia Zhu engages contemporary jewelry design's fascination with biomimicry and the translation of natural forms into wearable sculptural objects, participating in a long tradition extending from Art Nouveau's organic idealization through mid-century Scandinavian craft movements to present-day studio jewelry practice that values conceptual depth alongside technical virtuosity. The work demonstrates sophisticated metalsmithing technique in its execution of complex three-dimensional openwork structure, where pierced lattice elements create intricate positive-negative spatial relationships requiring precise control of saw work, filing, and surface finishing to achieve the crisp architectural clarity evident in the completed form, the high polish applied to convex exterior surfaces maximizes light reflection and enhances the precious quality of the sterling silver material while allowing the metal's inherent cool luster to read clearly against the warm earth tones of the natural wood staging environment. Compositionally, the pendant achieves balanced asymmetry within an overall symmetrical armature, suggesting organic growth patterns where bilateral organization provides structural logic yet individual elements demonstrate subtle variation preventing mechanical repetition, the flanking wing-like projections and delicate leg or antenna extensions create dynamic visual movement radiating outward from the central bulbous body, inviting the eye to travel around the form's perimeter while the openwork passages provide visual breathing room preventing the small scale from feeling dense or heavy. The work appears to explore themes of protection and vulnerability, the hardened metallic carapace suggesting armor or shelter while the pierced openwork simultaneously reveals interior space and implies porosity, perhaps meditating on the paradox of defensive structures that must remain permeable to function, or celebrating the elegant engineering solutions observable in insect exoskeletons where minimal material achieves maximum structural integrity through geometric optimization. The natural staging within a forest floor setting enriched with weathered wood and soft green foliage reinforces the biomorphic inspiration, positioning the jewel as discovered treasure within the organic world rather than manufactured commodity removed from natural context, the composition suggesting wonder at small-scale natural architecture and honoring the jeweler's role as translator between observed phenomena and refined artistic interpretation. One might contemplate how this pendant proposes relationship between wearer and natural world, whether the donning of insect-inspired form represents identification with small creatures' resilient adaptability, appreciation for overlooked beauty existing at scales requiring close attention, or simply delight in carrying sculptural poetry as personal adornment.

Unique Properties
This pendant reimagines the beetle as a kinetic vessel of enchantment. The hollowed wings form a delicate architectural shell, encasing a suspended sprite that moves freely within. As the wearer moves, the inner fairy gently shifts, producing a clear, bell-like resonance. The design merges sculptural precision with interactive sound, transforming jewelry into a living, sensory experience defined by motion, lightness, and subtle acoustic presence.

Production Technology
The design was developed through digital modeling to precisely define the hollow structure and internal suspension system. Using lost-wax casting, the beetle form was translated into metal while preserving fine openwork details. The inner sprite element was fabricated and integrated through a concealed kinetic mounting. Final processes included hand finishing, polishing, and careful assembly to ensure balanced movement and acoustic clarity.
Design Challenge
The main challenge was developing a hollow structure that could securely contain the inner sprite while allowing it to move freely and produce sound. The internal spacing had to be carefully adjusted to prevent obstruction while maintaining stability. Achieving the right balance between structural strength and visual lightness required multiple prototypes. Special attention was given to suspension, weight distribution, and assembly to ensure both durability and consistent kinetic response.
Project Duration
The project stated in December 2025 in Vancouver and finished in January 2026.
Operation Flow
The pendant comes to life through the wearer’s movement. As the body shifts, the small inner sprite gently moves within the hollow beetle form, creating a soft, bell-like sound. This subtle motion transforms the piece from a static object into a responsive presence. The interaction is intuitive and continuous, allowing the wearer to experience the jewelry not only visually, but through sound and movement.
Research
The design was influenced by the forests of Vancouver, where close observation of insects, organic structures, and natural movement sparked imaginative exploration. Sketching and prototyping were used to study how a protective outer form could contain a delicate inner presence. Special attention was given to creating a hollow structure that allows internal movement while maintaining stability. Through iterative testing, the relationship between protection, motion, and sound was refined, resulting in a piece that reflects the quiet vitality and mystery of nature.
Inspiration
The design is inspired by the beetle, a symbol of protection, transformation, and resilience. By envisioning the beetle as a living vessel, the piece explores the idea of an inner spirit sheltered within a structured exterior. The suspended sprite represents fragility and imagination, while the hollow wings suggest permeability rather than enclosure. Movement and sound become metaphors for presence, reminding the wearer that life, even when protected, remains dynamic and responsive.
