The Design

About Serenity Residence

Serenity is a residential interior design for a 107.7 square meter apartment in Tainan City, Taiwan. Curved ceiling forms wrap a structural beam and mechanical equipment, turning constraints into visual guides. The living, dining, and reading areas are combined in one open plan, so daylight reaches deep into the home. Matte gray-white paint reduces reflection, while an architectural concrete coating on the ceiling adds texture and wood elements add warmth. Storage is concentrated along the television wall in suspended cabinets.

Unique Properties
The project transforms fluid curves into functional elements. In the social area, rounded ceiling forms wrap beams and equipment, reinterpreting constraints as visual guides and creating upward, continuous flow. Living, dining, and reading areas remain open and connected, with storage concentrated at the TV wall and other elevations kept clean. Light tones carry daylight deep indoors, while the louvered bedroom window aligns with the bedhead, flexibly controlling light and comfort.
Dimensions & Packaging
The 107.7 m2 interior was reconfigured by integrating the study into the social area to expand the spatial scale. Circulation follows the idea of 'seeing the home's depth at a glance,' linking the reading zone, dining table, and living room in continuous visual relationships. Storage is concentrated along the TV wall, with cabinets suspended rather than grounded, preserving negative space below and enhancing lightness and visual flow.

Production Technology
Matte gray-white paint forms the primary finish, reducing reflection and visual disturbance so that light appears soft and evenly distributed. Architectural concrete coating is applied to the ceiling, introducing a subtle, rugged texture to prevent the pale space from appearing overly smooth or lacking dimension. Wood elements are added selectively to flooring and partial furnishings, creating balance between cool restraint and warmth. Material selection throughout the residence prioritizes durability and ease of maintenance.
Design Challenge
In the high-rise residence, mechanical equipment and piping required a lowered ceiling, and a major structural beam in the social area could not be removed. The challenge was preserving openness without visual oppression. By wrapping the beam and using curved transitions, volumetric boundaries were reorganized, turning constraints into design language and softening the sense of mass while maintaining a light, open spatial experience.
Research
Located in the North District, Tainan City, the 107.7 m2 home centers on bodily comfort in every movement. Structural beams and the original three-bedroom layout were reinterpreted with flowing curves, using rounded ceiling forms to dissolve boundaries and create a sense of upward continuity. Gray-white matte finishes pair with concrete textures and warm wood grain for balance. An open plan draws daylight deep inside, embedding the reading area into the social zone. Suspended storage along the TV wall preserves lightness, allowing daily rhythms to unfold with ease.
Inspiration
The design begins with the idea of natural bodily support, feeling at ease while walking, pausing, or turning. The homeowners wanted a quiet, lasting comfort without excess decoration. Gray-white tones form the base, balanced by concrete-textured finishes and warm wood grain to avoid sterility. Curves flow across walls, ceilings, and transitions, softening boundaries like gentle pauses in daily life-subtle, necessary, and calming.
Project Duration
The project finished in April 2025 in Taiwan.
Operation Flow
After moving in, the homeowners most often mention the sense of 'ease.' Even with multiple activities-reading, watching a movie, preparing light meals, or resting at the dining table-sightlines remain connected without disturbance. Light and visual continuity form the home's primary rhythm, allowing everyday behaviors to unfold naturally rather than through deliberate arrangement, creating a calm, fluid, and comfortable living environment.
