Interviews
Design Interview
What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
MokaMax was built on a single principle: that great coffee shouldn't be tied to a kitchen. The inspiration came from watching how people actually move through their days — between libraries, trains, mountain trails, and office desks — and realizing that portable coffee gear consistently fails them. Most compact brewers require you to unpack what amounts to a small chemistry set, and the cleanup afterward is just as burdensome. MokaMax was my response to that friction — the goal was to keep the ritual of good coffee, but remove all the clutter around it by collapsing a full pressure-brewing system into a single, rugged cylinder.
What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
My main focus was eliminating friction at every stage — brewing, drinking, cleaning, and carrying. I wanted someone to be able to drop in a filter pod, add grounds and hot water, twist to brew using the pressure mechanism, and drink — all from the same object — without managing a bag full of accessories or worrying about losing small parts. Equally important was making the product feel at home in a backpack alongside rugged outdoor gear, not just on a café shelf. The entire design — from the ridged silhouette to the flexible rope attachment — was driven by that "wanderer's tool" ethos.
What are your future plans for this award winning design?
MokaMax started as a proof of concept, and receiving the A' Design Award along with coverage in several design publications has given me real confidence that this is something worth developing further. I've had people reach out asking where they can buy it — which, honestly, is the most validating thing that could happen for a concept. Right now, it doesn't exist as a product, but I'm hoping to change that. I'm also at a point in my career where I'm thinking beyond industrial design and considering the transition into being a creator — and MokaMax feels like the right product to start that journey with. The road ahead will be full of learning and challenges of its own, but I'm excited for it.

- Production Technology
- The MokaMax utilizes a hybrid manufacturing approach: the primary chassis is CNC-machined from 304 food-grade stainless steel for high thermal mass and durability. Internal mechanical interfaces are precision injection-molded using heat-stabilized, BPA-free polymers. Functional touchpoints feature TPU overmolding for enhanced ergonomics in extreme climates. The unique ridged exterior is achieved through lathe-turning, finished with a scratch-resistant PVD coating for a rugged, Minimalist aesthetic.
- Design Challenge
- The hardest part was coming up with a form that felt rugged enough to be taking on usual camping trip and hikes, while being minimal and aesthetic to be used inside a library without raising any eyebrows.
- Research
- MokaMax began by researching the gap between domestic coffee rituals and the wilderness. User interviews revealed a need for a mess free, sustainable brewer that wouldn't lose parts in the field. Using a modular, interlocking system, the final design ensures easy cleaning and rugged portability. Featuring an integrated hiker's rope and biodegradable pods, MokaMax combines a minimalist aesthetic with high utility performance for both the campsite and the classroom.
- Inspiration
- Inspired by the Moka pot's iconic hourglass geometry, MokaMax translates the domestic coffee ritual into the wilderness. Research involved a competitive analysis of market leaders to design a rugged, modular extension for the portable brewing ecosystem. The project prioritizes durability through a unique interlocking architecture for ease of assembly. Motivated by sustainability and user centric ergonomics, the design integrates decomposable pods to ensure a low impact high utility experience.
- Project Duration
- The Project was started in September 2024 in Washington, DC and ended in April, 2025 in Boston.
- Operation Flow
- MokaMax reimagines the brewing process as a series of intuitive, tactile "clicks." Inspired by the simplicity of interlocking blocks, the three-part chassis snaps together to ensure no component is ever left behind. The interaction is a seamless transformation from a compact, rugged tool into a high-performance brewer. By housing a biodegradable pod within its ridged, easy-clean stainless steel shell, MokaMax delivers a sophisticated, zero-trace ritual for the modern explorer.
