About Exocet Multifunctional Chair

Exocet is a multifunctional chair made of Baltic birch and aluminium. The chair is built from a series of identical curved slats assembled around a central cylinder. The use of one basic slat shape supports an efficient fabrication process. Exocet can be set in several configurations, including a standard chair, a rocking long chair and a folded form. To change the shape, the user releases the pressure with the handle, moves the sections around the cylinder and tightens the handle again. The result is a chair with many positions and very few parts.

Within the distinguished lineage of bentwood furniture innovation that traces from nineteenth-century steam-bending techniques through mid-century organic modernism, Stéphane Leathead's Exocet Multifunctional Chair emerges as a sophisticated contemporary contribution that reimagines the relationship between seating, storage, and sculptural presence. The work demonstrates remarkable technical accomplishment in its manipulation of laminated wood, achieving continuous curves of considerable complexity while maintaining structural integrity across transitions from horizontal seating surface to near-vertical backrest. The designer appears to draw upon biomimetic principles, with the parallel-slatted construction evoking natural structures from the ribbed architecture of shells to the graduated fins of marine creatures, establishing a formal vocabulary that bridges organic reference and manufactured precision. The integration of the cylindrical storage drum represents a particularly inventive resolution of the perennial design challenge of combining multiple functions without compromising formal coherence, as this geometric element provides both visual grounding and practical utility while introducing a dynamic tension with the dominant curvilinear language. The material selection of light-toned laminated wood, likely birch or a comparable species, speaks to values of warmth, sustainability, and craftsmanship that resonate with contemporary design sensibilities while honoring established traditions of wood manipulation. The chromatic restraint of the natural palette, accented only by the white and silver of the drum element, allows the sculptural qualities of the form to command attention without decorative distraction. One might observe that the work invites multiple modes of engagement across its various configurations, suggesting a design philosophy that privileges adaptability and user agency. The viewer is encouraged to contemplate how the continuous flow of the wooden ribbon might transform the experience of sitting into an encounter with sculptural beauty, where function and aesthetic aspiration achieve harmonious integration.

Design Challenge
Finding solution to limit friction as much as possible. To select the proper material to produce the cylinder and handles to avoid deterioration.
Project Duration
The project started in July 2014. The first hand made prototype was created in August 2014. The first public exhibition took place in Toronto at the Interior Design Show in January 22 to 25, 2015.
Operation Flow
You can transform it by releasing the pressure with the handle. You move the section around the cylinder to create the desired configuration and you tighten the handle.
Research
The slat shape was the key element. It was imperative to design the slat so that it would maximize comfort through the various possible positions.
Inspiration
It started with a simple questioning. Can we create a long chair offering more than 3 back positions? And can it rock as well? And can it be made of very few pieces? Could a chair be designed using smooth curves instead hard straight lines? And most importantly, can it be simple yet innovative & elegant? I started designing with one obsession using only one basic shape allowing a very efficient fabrication process.

Design Interview about Exocet Multifunctional Chair

To design a chair that would have multiple functions while remaining comfortable and easy to use.

To create a chair using very few pieces. Could it be possible to design a chair using only one basic form

To create an Exocet Collection

As a personal challenge. I had enough of the traditional existing long chair.

I'm planning to sell the production rights but I do produce limited edition myself.

The desire to create something meaningful, different, pleasing.

The fact that you can transform it to your needs very simply.

When configured as a lounge chair, it looks like a fish. The Exocet name became obvious when I realized I could combine the "X" and the "O" to create one possible configuration. Exocet is the name of the flying fish.

3D software and good old

It is designed from one slat shape.

The technology is crucial to create pieces of the exact same shape. Without technology this design wouldn't be possible.

To produce perfectly identical slats. To avoid friction problems.

When I received amazing response form all around the world.

I realized that furniture design in something I should push further.
