The Design

About Wave Table

Wave is a coffee table made of ash wood. It combines opposites in many ways. The shape of the table resembles the stairs of the pyramids and the form of waves. So, it displays man-made and natural forms at the same time. The softness of the wave counterparts the angularity of the structure. Beside being a static object, it also gives the impression of dynamic motion by the fan-like rotation of the parts. Wave provides a new visual sight from every angle. By this it symbolizes the variety of nature. Wave does not contain any fittings or stiffeners. It holds itself.

The Recognition

About the Golden A' Design Award

Wave Table is a Golden A' Design Award winner, an immensely prestigious recognition granted to first-rate, marvelous, and outstanding designs. Golden winners are exceedingly innovative, visionary, and glamorously dazzling creations that reflect the prodigy, wisdom, and prowess of their designers. Wave Table is expected to be a highly praised, trendsetting, and monumental invention that delivers unprecedented value. Wave Table creates intense feelings of desire, evokes passion, encourages creativity, and fascinates us.

Interviews

Design Interview

What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?

I was inspired by the architecture of pyramid stairs and the movement of the waves. I was also inspired by organic principles that can be static and dynamic at the same time, like water.

What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?

I wanted to create interesting and original 3D structures by using simple geometric forms. My objective was to build a static object in which the steps of transformation can be traced so that it incorporates and expresses the dynamism of change. Beside being a static object, it also gives us the impression of dynamic motion by the fan-like rotation of the parts. It provides a new visual experience from every different angle. This table looks different from every pespective. This way it symbolizes the variety of nature.

What are your future plans for this award winning design?

I would like to show and sell my works to a wider audience and become an acknowledged designer.

Grand Interview

Your innovative combination of pyramidal stairs and wave forms in the Wave Table creates a striking visual dialogue between geometric and organic elements. Could you elaborate on how this fusion emerged during your creative process?

I was inspired by the architecture of pyramid stairs and the movement of the waves. I wanted to create interesting and original 3D structures by using simple geometric forms. I multiplied and then rotated the frames. My objective was to build a static object in which the steps of transformation can be traced so that it incorporates and expresses the dynamism of change. I was also inspired by organic principles that can be static and dynamic at the same time, like water.

The Wave Table achieves structural integrity without traditional fittings or stiffeners - an impressive engineering feat. How did your collaboration with joiner Miklós Sárácz help overcome the technical challenges of creating this self-supporting design?

The wooden structure and the large tempered glass top meet only on a thin surface. It was made without the use of any fittings or stiffenings. The structure holds itself. It gives stability and at the same time strengthens its lightness and airiness. The bright natural colouring gives the structure lightness, which balances the stability and rigidness of the angular forms. Beside being a static object, it also gives us the impression of dynamic motion by the fan-like rotation of the parts. It provides a new visual experience from every different angle. Another unique attribute of the piece is that it does not contain any fittings or stiffenings. It holds itself. It unites angularity and softness. The sights of this table is different from every pespective symbolize varied of nature. Only two materials, wood and glass are used. To create an airy and natural effect we had to avoid using any supporters or mounts. Finding the precise joining points and the object’s fulcrum was also challenging. Besides, we had to find the ideal size and place the glass top exactly horizontally. We needed to find the balance between the angular shapes and the lightness of the object to reach its harmony.

As both a psychologist and furniture designer, how does your understanding of human perception and emotion influence the dynamic, transformative qualities we see in the Wave Table?

Well, I think my wide-ranging and multifaceted experience of human functioning shaped my approach and thinking. The consequence of this is a different way of seeing and perspective that I apply in my art. What I did in these applications is actually not furniture design, but a kind of unique mixture of design and industrial art. Basically, I'm not a furniture designer, I've never claimed that, I'm just a person coming from a different direction, who designs and creates using his previous knowledge and perspective. I am also studying graphic design, and I also paint, and this approach appears everywhere in my work.

Production Technology
The table was made of ash wood. Natural colour varnish was applied on the surface.
Design Challenge
Only two materials, wood and glass are used. To create an airy and natural effect we had to avoid using any supporters or mounts. Finding the precise joining points and the object’s fulcrum was also challenging. Besides, we had to find the ideal size and place the glass top exactly horizontally. We needed to find the balance between the angular shapes and the lightness of the object to reach its harmony.
Research
I have done some research in modular, modularity design and paper (pop) up, paper folding techniques. As for design techniques I've tried to experiment a lot with modularity in design technique and read many articles about it. I tried to use smaller parts, modules or skids to create a more multiple and novel object. I experimented with many shapes and sizes of simple moduls, units and then I multiplied and rotated them in several ways. I always experimented with the paper folding techniques in asimilar way.
Inspiration
I was inspired by the architecture of pyramid stairs and the movement of the waves. I wanted to create interesting and original 3D structures by using simple geometric forms. I multiplied and then rotated the frames. My objective was to build a static object in which the steps of transformation can be traced so that it incorporates and expresses the dynamism of change. I was also inspired by organic principles that can be static and dynamic at the same time, like water.
Project Duration
The project started in February 2016 in Budapest and finished in September 2016 in Budapest.
Operation Flow
This is a table around which people can gather and enjoy themselves while appreciating the sight of it. You can put all sorts of objects on or in it, e.g. magazines, newspapers, cups, glasses, etc. I think what particularly distinguishes this table from other tables is the intresting, suprising perspective, the technical solutions, background work, process of the design, the quality of the ash wood and the execution.
