Interviews
Design Interview
What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
The main principle, idea and inspiration behind my design was from the flower daisy. The reason I chose blue is blue is more rare than pink and peach daisies.
What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
Femininity and versatility. I want this piece to be appear feminine and flexible as to be able to wear differently at different occasions. Also shapes of the petals.
What are your future plans for this award winning design?
My future plan is to publicize my design and to pitch company whom needed my services.
Grand Interview
Your innovative approach to the Blue Daisy Multifunctional Pendant's interconnecting system beautifully mirrors the composite nature of actual daisies - could you elaborate on how this natural inspiration influenced your technical solutions for the connecting mechanisms?
Since the ring piece can be transform to be pendant, I do not want the original pendant to be big so it will look like a bail to the other two pendant pieces. The pendant or bail lookalike consists of an independent pendant which you can wear it alone for casual occasion. On the other options the earrings of the dangle part can also be pendant in which both pieces can connect with each other for a longish look of pendant. I used a concept of “dancing daisies” for the pendant whereby you can see the curve and when two pieces connected to each other it creates motion as well. Meanwhile it also touches safely on the skin. The technical solution is as the same principle whereby we work at the back of the design so the front aesthetic can be preserved.
The Blue Daisy Multifunctional Pendant showcases an intriguing balance between delicate aesthetics and practical versatility - what guided your decision-making process in selecting blue and yellow sapphires to achieve both visual impact and symbolic meaning?
The blue and yellow color from the daisy is the best contrast and why I chosen blue sapphire and yellow sapphire is because they are tough but not hardest. Just like the nature of daisy, feminine but strong. Not the hardest stone like diamond I will choose because hardest can mean stubborn and for a feminine flower like daisy a hint of strength is their character. People associate blue to more masculine behaviour but my blue daisy design in not entirely masculine, but achieving charm and elegant yet extraordinary with the contrast.
How did your background in marketing inform your development of the Blue Daisy Multifunctional Pendant's adaptable design concept, particularly in understanding how modern consumers might interact with transformable jewelry?
My background of marketing taught me how to observe, analyze and research about the market positioning, user behavioral and the be stand out from other marketing options. On the development part, for every new product development we need to go thought numerous processes from ideation to reality. It takes longer time even in the preparation but it definitely worth it. Therefore, patience and mental strength are indeed play a vital role. Having said that, sometime, taking outsider feedback can be greatly help as well.

- Production Technology
- Number of sketches were made for design elements such as size, shape, arrangement and practicality. I also used clay and paper cut to assist me better. Discussions between manufacturer, checking result or progress at every stage was utmost important for accuracy, good workmanship and common understanding.
- Design Challenge
- The most challenging was the technical part of the connector and hook whereby it has to be practical, and yet unnoticeable. Couple of trial and errors made and communication to manufacturer also has taken up some time.
- Research
- Firstly, to check the characteristic of the flower such as the petals, colors and composites. Actual flowers and pictures were gathered. Then, ratio and size of the flower was taken. Multiple sketches were made in order to translate it into jewelry. Other than basic tools, clay was used for initial concept and changes. It then translated into wax carving as a model before fabricated it to the shapes and form. Technical part such as size, weight, hook, tail and flexibility were also tested to ensure meeting the versatility yet modelling blue daisy without compromising the practicality.
- Inspiration
- The inspiration was from blue daisy flower which the color is rare, unique and mystic in compare to pink or peach daisies. Imagined the daisy is flourishing and crawling, therefore, the curve was made to create a softer approach pendant. There are three separate parts. First, just only wear the bail for casual and simplicity. Second, choose one daisy as an add-on to hook on the bail. Third wear all together. The pendant was created for flexibility and different outcomes.
- Project Duration
- This piece started in June 2018 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and ended August 2018.
- Operation Flow
- Blue Daisy is meant for multifunctional or interchangeable. From casual to more luxury feel at different occasions. It is very simple to operate. Just hook onto one another from a tiny tail hidden behind. No pressure is needed. It is safe to wear as the tail was designed with the flow of the outer shape with certain length requirement. To remove simply follow the flow to unhook.
