About Tripilot

Production Technology
Tripilot is built on a large language model (LLM) backend integrated with a real-time travel data API layer for flights, hotels, and destination content. The interface is developed using a cross-platform mobile framework ensuring consistent UX across iOS and Android. User preference modeling is handled through an on-device and cloud-hybrid personalization engine. The mascot characters are designed in vector illustration and animated using frame-based and skeletal animation techniques for smooth in-app interactions.
Design Challenge
Understanding how foreign travelers experience anxiety, confusion, and decision fatigue in unfamiliar countries required extensive research. Technically, integrating Chinese local travel APIs, many of which are not internationally accessible, with a multilingual conversational AI was a significant engineering obstacle. Ensuring cultural sensitivity in mascot design and content recommendations added further creative complexity.
Research
Research focused on the experience of foreign travelers in high-barrier destinations, with China as the primary case study. Methodology included interviews with expatriates, tourists, and business travelers, alongside analysis of existing travel tools serving non-Mandarin speakers. Results revealed critical gaps in local booking access, cultural guidance, and real-time language support. These findings shaped Tripilot's core features: adaptive preference learning, localized content delivery, and an emotionally engaging mascot-driven interface designed to build trust in unfamiliar environments.
Inspiration
Tripilot was inspired by two converging frustrations: the disorientation of traveling in countries with significant language and cultural barriers, and the exhaustion of fragmented planning across countless disconnected apps. Foreign travelers in destinations face both simultaneously. This motivated a single intelligent companion that does not merely translate, but genuinely learns each traveler's preferences and guides them with the confidence of a knowledgeable local friend.
Project Duration
Tripilot was conceived, researched, designed, and developed in late 2025 in Shanghai
Operation Flow
Users begin by chatting with Tripilot's AI, guided by two friendly mascot characters who introduce the experience. The app asks simple questions to understand travel style, budget, and interests. As the user interacts more, Tripilot builds a preference profile that powers increasingly personalized recommendations. When ready, users can confirm bookings for hotels, flights, and activities directly within the app. The mascots reappear at key moments — confirmations, weather alerts, and trip countdowns — keeping the journey engaging from planning to return.
